Panther Tank first drive.
This is the first post rebuild drive a Panther Tank. This tank was assembled in February of 1944. This tank fell through the ice and into a small river in Poland in January of 1945. It spent the next 45 years submerged. This rebuild started almost 6 years ago and is nearly complete. (some footage provided by Greg Taylor of Taylor Restorations and Pahrahdise Ranch. The Maybach engine in this tank is using the original block, crank shaft, connecting rods,connecting rod bearings, pistons, valves, camshafts , heads. The crankshaft mains were ground to remove the rust pits, new main bearing rollers were created to obtain the correct bearing clearance. This engine is using the original 6.8:1 compression ratio.. PANZER - Panther tank - the development
The Panther tank fielded by Nazi Germany in World War II that served from mid-1943 to the end of the European war in 1945. It was intended as a counter to the T-34, and to replace the Panzer III and IV, though it served along with them as well as the heavier Tiger tanks until the end of the war. The Panther's excellent combination of firepower, mobility, and protection served as a benchmark for other nations' late war and immediate post-war tank designs and it is frequently regarded as the best tank design of World War II Until 1944, it was designated as the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther and had the ordnance inventory designation of Sd.Kfz. 171. On 27, February 1944, Hitler ordered that the Roman numeral V be deleted from the designation. The Panther tank was a compromise of various requirements. While sharing essentially the same engine as the Tiger I tank, it had better frontal armor and firepower, and was lighter overall and thus faster, and could handle rough terrain better than the Tigers. The tradeoff was weaker side armor, and so the Panther would prove to be deadly in open country and shooting from long range, but vulnerable to close-quarters combat. The Panther was also far cheaper to produce than the Tiger tanks, and only slightly more expensive than the Panzer IV, as its design came to fruition at the same time that the Reich Ministry of Armament and War Production was making great efforts to ramp up war production. Panther Tank Maybach engine test
This is the first post-rebuild engine test of a 1400 cubic inch Maybach V-12 that spent 45 years submerged in a Polish river. After further testing this engine will be re-installed in the same Panther tank it was submerged inside of. Engine restoration crew: Jacques Littlefield, Greg Taylor, Bill Nahmens, Keith Boles, Dave Marian and Jason Pietz. Arnold Chaves of Dos Palmas Machine rebuilt the cylinder heads and provided technical assistance throughout the rebuild. Original camshafts re-ground by Spiro of Hot Rod Cams. The crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons were reconditioned by Babbitt Bearing. Carburetor bodies, floats and misc. parts supplied by Michael Gibb of the SDKFZ foundation. Special fittings, fasteners and fixtures created by Greg Matonis of Matonis Tool and Engineering. Crankshaft roller bearings reconditioned by Bearings Manufacturing Company. All gaskets laser cut by Advanced Laser and Water jet cutting. Carburetors wet flow tested at Ace Fuel Systems. This engine is part of the collection of the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation. Panzer V (Panther) Tank
The Canadian War Museum recently restored one of Second World War's best tanks: the rare German Panzer V (or Panther) tank. Designed to combat highly effective Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and the KV-1, the Panther showcased superior firepower, mobility, and frontal armor protection, although its complex drive and suspension systems left it vulnerable to mechanical failure. From 1943 to 1945, Germany produced 6000 of these fearsome Panthers, which served Italy's eastern front and in northwest Europe. This captured Panther was part of a Victory-in-Europe Day parade in Ottawa on May 8, 1945, and was later sent to a Canadian Forces Base in Borden, Ontario, where it remained for 60 years. The military donated the tank to the Canadian War Museum in 2005 where, after a two-year, 4000-hour, restoration project, it was placed on public display in January 2008. Panther tank- Achtung Panzer!
The Panther was intended to supplement the Panzer IV and replace the Panzer III medium tanks. Each German Panzer (armored) Division had two tank battalions; the intent was to equip one battalion in each division with Panthers, retaining the lighter, older, but still useful Panzer IV in the other battalion. Beginning in mid-1943, battalions were gradually converted to Panthers. The Panther first saw action at Kursk on July 5, 1943. Early tanks were plagued with mechanical problems: the track and suspension often broke, and the engine was dangerously prone to overheating and bursting into flames. At Kursk, more Panthers were disabled by their own failings than by enemy action. For example, the XLVIII Panzer Corps reported on July 10, 1943, that they had 38 Panthers operational and 131 awaiting repair, out of about 200 they had started with on July 5. Heinz Guderian, who had not wanted Hitler to order them into combat so soon, later remarked about the early Panther's performance in the battle: "they burnt too easily, the fuel and oil systems were insufficiently protected, and the crews were lost due to lack of training." Guderian also stated, however, that the firepower and frontal armor were good. While many of the Panthers used at Kursk were damaged or suffered from mechanical difficulties, only a small number were lost for good and the tanks also achieved success, with 263 Soviet tanks claimed to have been destroyed by them.
