At the 1968 Europeans Seyfert was able to present a triple loop. Nevertheless, she only won the silver medal, because she was far behind after the school figures. This is the translation of Eva Pawlik´s commentary (The 1949 European Champion and 1948 Olympic Silver Medalist Eva Pawlik was the first female sportscaster in the German speaking countries and probably the first internationally successful skater to be a European figure skating TV commentator): "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, I say hello again from Västerås where the ladies´ free program at the European figure skating Championships takes place today. You are about to see the titleholder Gabriele Seyfert from East Germany. After the compulsory figures she is only in the third position. --- Double lutz and double toe-loop. - Double Axel. - Oppacher jump and double toe-loop. -- Double flip. -- Gaby Seyfert has been skating since she was 4yo. She is coached by her mother in Chemnitz. From the year 1960 on she has been the East German Champion running. Triple loop (in German: Rittberger). Double lutz. Double loop (Rittberger). Double toe-loop. - - A wonderful program shown by the East German skater with only very few moments in which she was not perfect. She is an impressive skater, her jumps are high and a triple jump is highly remarkable in a program of a lady. At the microphone: the 1948 Olympic runner-up Eva Pawlik. Pawlik underlined in her commentary Janet Lynn´s enormous artistic abilities. I was asked to translate my mother´s commentary for the non German speaking audience: "Though participating for the first time at Olympics or Worlds Janet Lynn is well known to us. Last year, she did some training in Switzerland (Davos) and then came to Vienna where the Worlds took place. Lynn did not participate but showed her free program at a skating exhibition in Vienna. We were all deeply impressed by the enormous artistic abilities of the then 13-year-old girl. She is extremely fit. When practising she skates her free programme three times non-stop without getting tired. These 12 minutes are by far longer than a normal free programme at the men´s events which lasts 5 minutes. Delayed axel. Double axel. Double flip. Inside axel (in German the sort of axel landed on the inside edge is called inside axel). Double lutz. Triple salchow, though not perfect (but nevertheless - after the sounding of Pawlik´s voice when mentioning it - a small sensation). Her greatness is her style (special emphasis on the word „style" in the sounding of Pawlik´s voice). Other young skaters may be technically brilliant as well but it is the charisma they lack. Lynn, however, though only 14 years old, has already developed her artistic abilities almost completely. Double salchow. Perhaps Peggy Fleming is Lynn´s role model as Fleming also skates remarkably <b>...</b>

This is the translation of Pawlik´s commentary: "And now you will see the lady skater that is to be considered the world´s best free skater: Gabriele Seyfert from East Germany, a three-time European Champion and the last year´s World Champion. She is 19 yo and lives in Chemnitz. She is coached by her mother, Mrs. Müller. Seyfert is currently in the second place, some 20 points behind Beatrix Schuba after the compulsory figures. Double lutz, double loop (in German: Rittberger). Double axel. She performs this jump in such a uniquely beautiful way. A clean take-off, the quickest rotation at the maximum height and a clean landing on the outside edge again. Double toe-loop. Double axel. Double flip. Double loop. Double lutz. Double loop and immediately a second one. (Admiration in the sound of Pawlik´s voice when saying immediately). That was again a terrific performance of the reigning World and European Champion. It is respectable that she is always fit. I have never seen that Gaby would have made bad mistakes in an international competition. They told that some mistakes were slipping in at the national championships. Gaby is said to have landed some double jumps on both legs at the East German competition. Eva Pawlik and Rudi Seeliger perform some of their trademark moves to beautiful Viennese music. I noticed they are doing a death spiral here in 1957. I had always thought the Protopoppovs invented that move in the early 60's??? They had a unique combination move where they linked a lift, into a sort of throw spin....and, of course, well known for the JackHammer. (I bet there aren't 100 girls in the history of the world who have subjected themselves to that experience!!) Eva and Rudi are candidates for the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame this year!!! Rodnina Ulanow winning the 1971 Worlds. At the microphone: the 1949 European Champion Eva Pawlik. This is the translation of her commentary: "The Russian pair Smirnova/Suraikin, who took the silver at the Europeans, is leading after the short program before the titleholders Rodnina/Ulanow. That is a totally correct decision of the judges because Rodnina/Ulanow´s short program yesterday was by no means wonderful. The first two elements were presented in an outstanding manner but from the third element on the faultlessness was gone. When doing the double toe-loop Ulanow lacked half a rotation, so he landed forward on the inside egde. He did a three turn that is usually done after such a mistake. They tripped themselves up. I must say that the whole performance was really not perfect at all. Although Rodnina/Ulanow had to skate as the first couple, they got rather high marks. However, there were some 5.6 among these marks. Smirnova/Suraikin presented their short program without any mistakes. They got the mark 5.8 by almost every judge and twice the mark 5.7. So Smirnova/Suraikin are unanimously in the first place after the short program. But now on the ice the titleholders Irina Rodnina and Alexej Ulanow. Before the competition they were extremely nervous. They did not even talk to one another. You can imagine their mental situation. They know exactly that every slight mistake could lead to the loss of their World title - provided that Smirnova/Suraikin will not make <b>...</b>

Gabriele Seyfert won the Olympic Silver Medal at the 1968 Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble. At the microphone: the 1948 Olympic Silver Medalist Eva Pawlik. This is the translation of her commentary: "Gabriele Seyfert, the last year´s European Champion who lost her title to Hana Maskova this year. As Seyfert admitted, Maskova deserved the European title because Seyfert had made some mistakes in the compulsory figures. Seyfert is an outstanding free skater. Her free program was the ladies´ best in Sweden (where the Europeans took place). I am sure she will be brilliant again today and give us a taste of her enormous abilities. Double lutz. Double toe-loop. The preliminary result at the moment: Peggy Fleming is first, followed by Hana Maskova. Janet Lynn from the United States whom we have just seen before is currently in the fifth place. Double axel.
