Bio-Sawdust For Biomass And Pellet Plants - Bandit Beast Recyclers
New technology developed by Bandit Industries for its Beast horizontal grinders may change the way that we process material for biomass power plants and pellet plants. In 2007, Bandit Industries developed a chipping option for its Beast Recyclers enabling Beast owners to quickly convert the machine from a grinder to a whole tree chipper. Bandit has refined the chipping option, allowing the Beast to effectively produce a 1/4"-minus sawdust-like chip, a conventional chip size of 3/4"-minus, or any size in between. When producing a sawdust-type product, the chipping operation generally yields better than 95% acceptable material (¼" minus) in one pass. Because the Beast chipping system uses a cutting action, as opposed the beating action used in hogs and hammermills, far less energy is consumed in producing the fine material. The wood fibers are cut, not fractured. Pellet operations report that this type of material packs much more efficiently into the pellet dies, yielding greater production.

This video can provide a good introduction into how to make wood pellets. First the sawdust moisture content is measured, if it contains more than 15% moisture the wood is dried. Once the wood sawdust is dry it is ready for making into wood pellets. This is a highly automated wood pellet plant that requires only one operator. First the sawdust is loaded into the hopper, which has an auger in the bottom. The auger slowly feeds the wood sawdust into the hammer mill. The hammer mill has a 5mm screen fitted, which is suitable for making 6mm wood pellets. Once the wood has been reduced in size the particles maybe mixed with a small amount of modified cornstarch to act as a binder. The sawdust and binder is then moved up to the pellet mill via an auger ready to be made into pellets. In the pellet mill water and vegetable oil maybe added to adjust the compression within the pellet mill die. When making wood pellets it's important to make sure the die does not become blocked by adding too much water. Water addition is controlled with a variable speed peristaltic pump. Once the material has been mixed it is sent into the pellet mill ring die and rollers. This is a large scale pellet production facility that can be used as a perminant installation or frequently relocated to other locations. The mobile aspect of this pellet plant means that it can be moved to the raw material to reduce high transportation costs of low density biomass. Each part of the pellet plant process is contained within its own module. The modules are then stacked one on top of the other to complete the pellet plant. To increase the capacity of the pellet plant at a later date can be easily done by simply adding more modules. In this instance the setup is been used to make wood pellets for domestic fuel customers. The wood is first dried in a large rotary dryer, the heat source for the dryer is a biomass burner which uses roughly 3% of the raw material to generate sufficent heat for drying. The dried wood is then sent through a hammer mill module fitted with cyclone seperators. After the hammer mill the wood fiber is dropped down into the pellet mills. Each module of the pellet plant contains a 2 ton per hour pellet mill, however on lower density biomass the productivity per hour will be higher. In this instance two 2 ton per hour pellet mills are been used to make wood pellets. Grass Pellet Plant Making Biomass Fuel Pellets

The Reed grass is harvested several times a year and has no local value, therefore the grass is been made into fuel pellets. These grass pellets can be burnt in suitable biomass pellet stoves and boilers. The reed grass when harvested has a moisture content below 15% which makes it suitable for making pellets in the pellet mill without the need for drying. In the pellet plant process first the grass is sent through a shredder to reduce the grass to particles roughly an inch long. The grass is then collected from the shredder via a fan and placed into a silo via a cyclone seperator. The silo is fitted with several proximity sensors that alert the operator if the pellet plant is low on material. The grass is then metered into a hammer mill which is fitted with a 5mm screen. The grass is then sent via an auger to the hopper on the ring die pellet mill. There the grass is mixed to provide consistency, and additional water or vegetable oil maybe added to adjust the compression within the pellet mill die. The grass is then processed through the ring die pellet mill into 8mm fuel pellets suitable for some biomass pellet stoves and most biomass boilers.
