INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY - A YOUTUBE COLLABORATION (2008)

I forgot I had this video in my folder so I wanted to upload this. This collaboration was created way back in 2008 when I first started SmokingMonkeyVideos and I wanted to gather as many people as I could with different types of disabilities. This was done a long time ago and I apologize for not giving credit to the people who participated because I have no idea what their youtube channel names are as I cannot find the document for the video as well as the lyrics I wrote. But I will say thank you again to you all for making this video possible for raising awareness to others who have no idea what we go through every day in life. This day usually starts in November each year and the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Web accessibility in civil society: Persons with disabilities in today's educational environments

Today's digital age has shifted traditional notions of how persons with disabilities are included in society. The principle of web accessibility will be explored in the context of educational environments. If we agree that individuals with disabilities should fully participate in today's highly interactive and real-time online education, what does it mean for the institution? What does it mean for faculty? What does it mean for staff? A great deal of national and international attention is being paid to this topic. All of these themes will be explored during a public discussion sponsored by Dartmouth's Institute for Security, Technology and Society. Dr. Cyndi Rowland is the Executive Director of WebAIM and the Technology Director of the National Center on Disability and Access to Education, both housed at Utah State University.

The International Day for Persons with Disabilities

Persons with disabilities make up an estimated 15 per cent of the world's population, according to the United Nations. Almost one-fifth of the estimated global totals of persons living with disabilities, or between 110-190 million, encounter significant difficulties. Furthermore, a quarter of the global population is directly affected by disability, as care-givers or family members. Persons with disabilities encounter many disadvantages in their societies and are often subjected to stigma and discrimination. They remain largely marginalized, disproportionately poorer, frequently unemployed and have higher rates of mortality. Furthermore, they are largely excluded from civil and political processes and are overwhelmingly voiceless in matters that affect them and their society. On Saturday December 3, we'll all be given a unique opportunity to broaden our scope of knowledge concerning the lifestyle, the challenges and the success stories that people with disabilities face on a daily basis, as we celebrate The International Day for Persons with Physical Disabilities. Here from Jamie Harris a courageous young woman who has cerebral palsy as she shares her views on life, receive additional comments from Xavier Noordermeer the executive director of Community Living Windsor who discusses the importance of societal and social inclusion for persons with a disability and finally Denise Best a legally blind woman shares her opinion on promoting the importance of understanding and ...

Your Story: World Disability Day

"When life gives you lemons make lemonade" is a popular adage, very much applicable in the story of two mechanics who have various physical challenges but are most preferred by motorists around Ngara area, in Nairobi. On your story this week, meet the two mechanics who have vowed that no physical challenge will hinder them from turning obstacles into opportunities ... and being the international day of persons with disabilities, here at Citizen TV, we celebrate all persons with disabilities who make up an estimated 15 percent of the world population. 2011 JCI TOYP Honoree Riku Virtanen

For his extraordinary work in human rights advocacy for the disabled, Riku- Heikki Virtanen of Helsinki, Finland was named a 2011 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP) recipient in the category of contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights. Riku-Heikki Virtanen was diagnosed with eye and ear nerve degeneration in kindergarten. Learning to live with his disability sparked his interest in a legal career. After earning his law degree, he hoped to help people in similar situations and show others that a disability cannot stop someone from accomplishing their goals. At 27, he graduated as one the first deaf and blind attorneys in the world. Virtanen stepped up to the challenge of becoming an ambassador for people living with disability. He shared his experiences studying and navigating through daily life with schools, decision makers, health professionals and the media. He collaborates with both the UN Convention of Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the World Federation of the Deafblind. As a motivated advocate, he is also involved with the Finnish Deaf-Blind Association and the Threshold Association, a human rights organization that promotes the rights of persons with disabilities. Virtanen provides strong peer support for those living with disabilities and their families. He sets a strong example for individuals that, despite physical challenges, with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.

Convention on the Righs of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) - Living the Treaty

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty that promotes quality of life, choice and inclusion of people with disabilities. It protects fundamental rights and advances respect for persons with disabilities as part of the human family. California's Department of Developmental Services Consumer Advisory Committee showcase the importance of "Living the CRPD Treaty" to advance basic human rights, dignity and autonomy, including the freedom to make one's own choices. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - Human Rights Forum

Abridged Version - Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability California Human Rights Forum: We believe human rights are universal and must be based on dignity and respect for all persons, including persons with disabilities. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a treaty that promotes quality of life, choice and inclusion of people with disabilities. The California Department of Developmental Services - Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) invited Kathy Guernsey, Education and Outreach Director of the US International Council on Disabilities to lead a California statewide Human Rights Forum for advocates and community members to discuss the CRPD and its relevance to everyday life. Kathy links basic human rights to the treaty that increases awareness and application in plain language. The forum and video was a volunteer effort by all participants; USICD, CA DDS, Board Resource Center and statewide advocates. The CAC believes that knowing your rights and applying them to everyday life is important for everyone. In order to live by their motto, My Life, My Way, members wanted to understand more about our basic rights as human beings. In partnership with the Board Resource Center, the CAC conducted a Human Rights forum through which this CRPD DVD and booklet were produced to educate more people about the significance of the treaty and human rights. Using their decision-making process called Think-Plan-Do, the CAC examined CRPD concepts and ...

Unequal Treatment Drives Disability Rights Movement

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http New estimates show that more than one billion people have a physical or mental disability. Experts say almost one-fifth of them experience serious difficulties in their daily lives as a result of their disability. And disability rates are increasing as populations get older and more people get long-term conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. The estimates are in a report from the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The World Report on Disability says few countries do enough to meet the needs of the disabled. They face problems like discrimination and a lack of health care and other services. They have higher poverty rates and lower education levels than other people. This is true in both rich and poor countries. Cindy Lewis is the director of programs for an organization called Mobility International USA. Ms. Lewis says people with disabilities helped write the new report. One of its messages is that people with disabilities should not only receive services -- they should also help design and provide them. Ms. Lewis says that way they can become decision makers and policy makers. "People with disabilities are a huge and untapped resource for governments, communities [and] development programs. And that is a big problem that we are working on addressing." Ms. Lewis says in many countries, people with disabilities are organizing to support disability rights. "It's a very ...
