Pet Therapy in Hospitals

Everyone knows how beneficial pets can be in our lives. But now, recent scientific evidence has actually proven what pet owners already knew. Heart failure patients who spent 12 minutes with a dog or cat had lower stress hormone levels, lower blood pressure levels, and a general brighter outlook about their recovery. Therapy dogs, and cats, have now started their rounds, under "doctor's orders". Watch this video to learn more.

Pet Therapy: Boston at Kaiser Permanente

Bob Armstrong brings his old golden Boston (a retired guide dog for blind) to the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Santa Clara, CA. I didn't even know they had pet therapy until mom's last day in the hospital, and found Bob and the pooch in the lobby. They were kind enough to come up to the fourth floor and had a spirit lifting visit with Mom. Boston now has his own Facebook page, Bostobeast. Become a fan. Write Bob and Boston at boston@bostobeast.com. Music is by Paul Adams from his album "A View from the Plain." Listen and buy at www.pauladams.org.

Silverado Pet Therapy

Dog-people, cat-people, bunny, horse, fish and bird-people all have one thing in common: they connect with and love animals. Even the most hardened and grumpy person can become a softy when a puppy is placed in their arms. Animals have a power that many in the scientific community have had a difficult time quantifying. Several studies have now shown how beneficial pet interaction can be to both mental and physical health. In this video, Loren Shook, CEO and Co-Founder of Silverado Senior Living, discusses the importance of pets in Silverado's model of care.

Dayton Children's Pet Therapy Program sponsored by Iams

Pet Therapy was established at Dayton Childrens in 1988 as a way to incorporate the child/pet bond into the treatment plan. The dogs that visit The Children's Medical Center of Dayton have an impact on the patients, visitors and staff. Smiles appear immediatley when children and families see a dog headed down the hall. The dogs calm the children, help take their mind off their illness and increase socialization. The Children Medical Center of Dayton's pet therapy program is coordinated through the child life department. We call our program "Paw Prints" and we have funding donated by the IAMS Company. This allows us to provide a polaroid picture (of the dog and child) to them. They also receive a pet therapy sticker.
