Photography Tips from Commercial Photographer Vincent Laforet

www.silberstudios.tv Commercial photographer Vincent Laforet joins us today on the Marc Silber show to talk about his approach to photography. He provides us with photography techniques and tips for both amateurs and professionals alike. For six years, Vince was a photojournalist for the New York Times, where he worked on a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its 9 coverage. As a photojournalist, Vince often had to choose a single image that most accurately captured the essence of an event. He advises people to put the camera down, walk around, and ask themselves a series of questions, such as "What really is special about this place?" Learning about the history of a photo shoot location or finding the best time of day for shadows and lighting is just as important for creating a great photo composition. When looking through the lens, a photographer needs to make sure that a photo will elicit emotions and thoughts. Vince points out that many people romanticize the life of a photographer - they forget about the preparation and packing of equipment that accompanies every photo shoot. Carrying too much equipment slows down the photographer and may result in missed images and opportunities, not enough and you can also miss shots, so do your research and be prepared including your memory cards.

Beyond Witness: New Approaches to Crisis Photography (Richard Mosse)

pulitzercenter.org Pulitzer Center photographer Richard Mosse shares images from his project "Infra" (bit.ly We live in an era saturated with images of all kinds clamoring for our attention. Combine this with constantly shrinking space for serious, thought-provoking photography on complex issues, and a clear problem emerges. As a result, photojournalists must explore new ways to tell stories and identify or create new outlets for such work to be seen. Pulitzer Center photographers Dominic Bracco II, Sean Gallagher, Andre Lambertson, Richard Mosse, David Rochkind, Stephanie Sinclair and James Whitlow Delano discuss the unique ways they approach covering crises. This event is presented by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs, and FotoDC. Photojournalism and Photography Techniques: Tips From Ed Kashi

Award-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi joins us today on the Marc Silber Show to share tips on advancing your photography. His photojournalism work has covered a wide range of global issues and been featured in magazines such as The National Geographic, TIME, and Newsweek. Ed sees himself as a long-form visual storyteller and dedicates himself to telling stories of social or political significance. He often refers to the phrase "candid intimacy" for his work - people often look at his work and ask "How do you get so close to the people, but make it look like they don't know you're there?" When a photo achieves "candid intimacy," the observer is able to see into the soul of the subject. It is tough to achieve candid intimacy, especially when people are adverse to having their photos taken. More and more of his work is being shot from his hip or his shoulder, to avoid provoking people who are not favorable to the lens. Sometimes the best magic appears in images that are shot without staring into the viewfinder. Ed emphasizes that it is crucial to maintain an open heart and open mind, instead of settling for what one sees on the surface. Cameras are a passport into another world that you would never experience otherwise.
