San Francisco: Walking through outdoor stores @ Pier 39

After our very informative, entertaining and filling North Beach culinary tour on February 22, 2008, we proceeded up a very steep section of Filbert Street to reach the top of Telegraph Hill. In the mid 1800s a semaphore or signaling tower was located here that would announce the arrival of ships to local financiers, merchants and speculators. This signaling system was later replaced with an electrical telegraph in 1862. The 360 degree view from atop Telegraph Hill is amazing, we could see the downtown financial district with the Transamerica Pyramid, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the northern waterfront with Alcatraz and the Marine Headlands in the background, the Golden Gate Bridge and the western half of the San Francisco peninsula, stretching out towards Golden Gate Park. The crowning jewel of Telegraph Hill is the Coit Tower, built in 1933 with donations from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, a well-known volunteer firefighter and unusual female character who lived from 1842 to 1929. The main floor of the Coit Tower holds a series of murals that adorn all sides of the building, featuring vignettes of Californian life in the 1930s. The famous murals were created in 1934 as part of the Public Works of Art Project, a federal employment program for local artists. The content of the murals is fascinating as they depict scenes from industry and business as well as street scenes and agricultural images. Anyone interested in the history of the 1930s will be fascinated by the ...

California Sea Lions - Pier 39 San Francisco - YouTube Travel

Not long ago the Pier 39 California Se Lions disappeared over night, just gone. Lucky for us the returned from their trip up the California/Oregon coast. It's thought that food or mating motivated them to move, whatever it was I'm just glad as are all the tourists watching and photographing them that they're back. Sidebar - we saw a lot of seal colonies along the coast in California and Oregon. Canada slaughters seals by the hundreds of thousands and I don't think they would be as welcome at a pier by a city as the sea lions are in California. Thank you San Francisco...

San Francisco - Walking towards Pier 39

Finally we were treated to another gorgeous day with bright blue skies -- our last day in San Francisco (February 25, 2008). From the historic Queen Anne Hotel we took the bus downtown to famous Union Square, location of all sorts of fancy retail stores. Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, Nordstrom and many other upscale stores and boutiques make this a magnet for the true shopoholics. So far we had had extensive exposure to San Francisco's public transport system, but we had left the real highlight for the last day: a ride on one of the famous San Francisco cable cars! We hopped on at the corner of Powell and Geary Streets and started to enjoy the outdoor experience on this moving historic landmark. The cable car was so full I was literally hanging outside the vehicle and did not have enough space to turn my body around. I kept thinking to myself how ironic it was that in virtually every other kind of vehicle you have to stay seated and strapped into your safety belts. But here in San Francisco you can literally let it all hang out! What a great experience on this gorgeous day, it really brought out the kid in all of us. Our charming driver Rufus kept the whole car entertained and compared his job to being a supervisor at an adult day care centre. How true! Riding the San Francisco cable cars definitely brings out the playful and adventurous spirit in everyone, regardless of age. He even let us off at the top of Lombard Street to give us a quick peak at "the world's crookedest ...

World Famous Alcatraz Prison Island, San Fransisco, California And Pier 39 Sealions

My last day in San Francisco! But tomorrow I fly to VEGAS!!! Today I had a look round Alcatraz, plus stay tuned for a look at the Sealions that reside at Pier 39 these days! Some notes about Alcatraz: Alcatraz Island is an island located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. Often referred to as The Rock, the small island early-on served as a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a Federal Bureau of Prisons federal prison until 1963. Later, in 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986. Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. In 2008 the nation's first hybrid propulsion ferry started serving the island. Alcatraz has been featured in many movies, TV shows, cartoons, books, comics, and games. Music from www.incompetech.com
