Arrivò al potere a seguito del golpe del 1973 (il colpo di Stato militare - appoggiato da Stati Uniti, esponenti di ceti elevati, vertici della Chiesa cattolica cilena - che rovesciò il legittimo governo del Presidente socialista Salvador Allende, il quale perse la vita nel golpe). Attuò una politica economica fortemente liberista, con l'assistenza di un gruppo di giovani economisti cileni, guidati da José Piñera, detti Chicago boys, poiché formati a Chicago da Milton Friedman. Per alcuni questa politica durante il periodo di Pinochet, provocò una grande crescita economica, il cosiddetto miracolo del Cile.
