Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers -Player Piano Roll

Merry Christmas !..... Just in time for the season comes this early 20's Imperial piano roll featuring the great 4 handed duet efforts of George Stanley & Bob Alden. As in most duet rolls of th early 1920's, the "effect" was the primary goal in the production of musical pieces for the piano... The cumultive effect of the 4 hands here is heard in a wonderful orchestral arrangement of this traditional Christmas piece. To quote Readers Digest, 1981, "Leon Jessel caught the jaunty strut of toys exactly when he wrote his "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" as a novelty item in 1905. It was published in Germany and apparently heard there by a Russian producer who was readying a new revue for Paris bearing the title La Chauve-Souris (The Bat), for which he needed an offbeat dance number. He chose Jessel's rakish "Parade." The Bat opened on Broadway, finally, in 1922, and Ballard Macdonald, who wrote songs for the George White Scandals of 1924 and Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolic, gave the tune lyrics that although seldom heard anymore are included here. The arm-swinging melody and strutting rhythm of the piece make the march a charming one for children and adults at Christmas or any time of the year." Sit back and enjoy this roll and while you are at it subscribe to my channel for more classic rolls to come. Thanks for your viewing !! Midi Nickelodeon playing CIRCUS GALOP ITS INSANE

DEATH WALTZ CANT BE PLAYED ON A PIANO!! The problem is that the song was programmed incorrectly and just past the middle of the song there are too many overlapping notes . The computer compensates but the piano cannot. I have tried to re-write it somewhat but does not have the same effect. If someone actually wrote the music to play on a piano like Circus Gallop it would play but they basically just wrote the song for the computer to play and cannot be played on a real piano. "sorry" This song was a request.ThePiano was converted to a totally Midi operated Nickelodeon and does not have a roll frame. At Roberts Musical Restorations we can convert any Player Piano to what you see in the video. We also can install only the MIDI system to your Player Piano. Doctor Who theme, player piano

I made this arrangement 20 years ago for computer-controlled piano, but this is the first time I've been able to hear it on an actual computer-controlled piano instead of a MIDI synthesizer. Back around 1989, a friend sent me a four-hand piano arrangement of the 1980 version of the Doctor Who theme. It was by a couple of guys whose surnames were Balga and Hosek, as I recall. However, it was lacking in some areas, and they had misheard the chords as being dissonant (probably mistaking the grating sawtooth waveform of the original as being dissonance). So I essentially re-transcribed the entire piece from the recording, fixing rhythmic differences, the chords, adding notes that they had missed, and adding the "twinklies" as I call them. They're not exactly the same as in the original recording (back then I had no means to slow down the original recording to aid in transcription), but at least they're there now. Some of their original arrangement is still present (eg the "echo" of the melody and some grace notes), so I can't take full credit, though it's mostly mine. Anyway, with all the changes I made, it really was no longer a four-hand piano arrangement, though I suppose two people technically could play it if they really worked at it. The dynamics of the "twinklies" coming in and out while passing through other notes also makes it probably incapable of being done on a reproducing piano roll (admittedly I don't know exactly how their dynamics systems work), thus I don't ...
Alexanders Ragtime Band -player piano roll

This song was written by Irving Berlin in 1911, it is recorded here on QRS roll # Q306 with a note that it was originally a Royal roll # 3137,but no "played by" or arranger credits. This was Berlin's first big hit during the peak of the ragtime era. It has been recorded by many artists over the years. It is being played here by the pedals of a 1923 Harrington player piano.

Mozart's Piano Sonata performed on a player piano. Midi supplied by ajisabaki.com. Thank you, Aji! It sounds much better live, of course. Sorry for the background noises (I have a bird chirping, chiming clock, etc.) These player pianos are capable of playing single instrument midi's that can be downloaded off the Net. I simply use some freeware to assign the instrument as a piano, convert the midi to type 0 and save it to a floppy. The player does the rest.

AMICA 1995 Convention Souvenir player-piano roll

1995 Marked the first time AMICA held a convention in England (London). Rex Lawson assisted by Denis Hall hand-arranged, created wry lyrics for, and stenciled the lyrics on the roll one-at-a-time using a dot-matrix printer (yes, many copies were wasted by mis-feeding). The orchestration and lyrics parody the convention goers (mostly Americans) coming to London, attending the sites, then returning via Massachusetts. This video is made to zoom-in on the lyrics as best as I could while I pumped the piano. Please read-along and you'll agree this was a work of genius. Conlon Nancarrow, study no.12

Study no.12 for player piano by the late, great Mexican-in-exile, actually USAan in Mexican exile. Not really in exile either, but upon joining the communist party was facing harassment and denial of passport renewal. He fought against fascist Franco in the Spanish civil war. Quite a common thing among composers of that era to be extremely left-wing (Xenakis, Stockhausen etc)

The Monkees, "I'm a Believer" on Player Piano

Steinway288 wanted me to find something by the Monkees. So here's, "I'm a Believer" , originally recorded in 1966. Its a little choppy because there is no sustain pedal information in the midi file. The action of the piano is going to have to be rebuilt soon. All that has been done so far is new damper felts and backcheck felts. The hammers are worn bad. So I apologize for the sound I will be working on that in the near future. Thanks for watching.
12th Street Rag song version, player piano roll

One of my foot pedals squeaks up a storm for the first half of this one. I recorded it the same time as the others I posted recently, but it barely squeaked at all on those. Weird. It's more noticeable on the video than it was in person thanks to the compression of dynamics. Oh well. Anyway... Popular rags often were re-published as songs (even Maple Leaf Rag was turned into a song in 1904), and it seems 12th Street Rag was no exception, even though it has one of the least lyrical melodies there is! No doubt you recognize the music here, though of course as an instrumental rag it typically is played quite a bit faster than this. This roll is a re-cut. It has QRS catalog number Q-167 with the note: "The original QRS-1188." The roll bears a credit to Max Kortlander, but whether he did arrange this or this is one of the rolls QRS put out with his name on it to sell better, I don't know. I'll have to look it up unless someone chimes in before I get around to it. The rag of course is the work of Euday Bowman, from 1914. I have no idea who wrote the lyrics or when. Were these lyrics from the period? They have the quirkiness you would expect of a tune from the early 20th century -- especially using "jazz-time" as freely as "rag-time" as the terms were practically interchangeable in those days. As the lyrics are difficult to keep up with on the roll, here they are: In a certain city where the girls are cute and pretty, They have a raggy, jazzy jazz-time tune. When you hear that ...

"Sidewalks Of New York" Player piano roll w/ words

An old standard on Vocalstyle roll #13391 as played by Osgood and Black in 1925. Written in 1894 by James W. Blake and Charles B. Lawlor, this song became really well known in the failed presidential bid of Al Smith in 1928. Today it is almost a theme song for New York City. Listen to the result of the fantastic idea that a sheet of paper with holes punched in it can recreate the artistry of a musician. 100 years ago this was unbelievable technology, but what is more unbelievable is we can listen to it and hear exactly what people heard at that time . How many forms of our present tech. will still be around and functioning in 100 years?

I take absolutely no credit for the "Punchcard Reader" part of this machine. I wholeheartedly thank Kimundi for the design. The music is fully programmable, 48 beats of music, 12 measures in common time, 12 notes to choose from which includes every semitone in an octave. With some fancy piston work, the punchcards can be as long as they want, and you can have up to 30 notes to choose from. I built the punchcard reader from this video of Kimundi's www.youtube.com
