1959 Allis-Chalmers D17 plowing
This is my brother plowing with my 1959 D17 Allis-Chalmers gas tractor. I think the plow is a model 53. The ground had been left alone for about 10 years and was pretty rough. Took a while to get the plow shined up and the depth set but it's working pretty well now. Lots of stones, broke the tips of the front and rear points later.

The first part of the film shows cattle as they grazed on grasslands, and homesteaders who hurried onto the plains and grew large wheat crops. I have clients asking to have one payment for snow plowing their driveways for the winter season. Is there anywhere that one can get some sort of idea as to the expected snow for the season this year? I have searched everywhere, but found nothing. Realizing that predicting snowfall for any given year is about impossible, I am just wondering if anyone here has come up with an idea to supply this type of service. I did some last year, but lost each of them this year because we only had enough snow to plow 2 times, but they felt they paid a lot for just the 2 snow plows. Pete I charge by the hour sometimes. My minimum for snow plowing small driveways is $35 under 6 inches of snow. Over 6 inches of snow I will charge 40% more. My hourly rate is $125/hr per truck. In this video, plow train #5319 clears the mainline to allow the westbound California Zephyr to make it through. This is part 1 of 3. This video was taken 11 months after the first one I posted. Now, the mainline of my railroad is complete and this train clears the whole outdoor section of the line. The horrible screeching noise you will hear for about 5 seconds is a low hanging plastic footstep on one of the engines rubbing on the track. This is a complete walk around and inside tour of the awesome 1966 Union Pacific Rotary Snowplow. The #900081 is truly an awesome beast. It's the heaviest of it's kind and it's powered by a massive GM/EMD 16 Cylinder Turbo Diesel that cranks out 3000 horsepower. All the power from it's massive engine goes to power the 12 foot diameter rotary blades. Those blades can spin at a maximum of 150 RPM and they generate a tremendous amount of force. This huge machine was pushed through the snow by as many as 4 locomotives. Saw the plow on the kawi you modified and I liked it so much I built my own with some extra features( hydraulic tilt :). I built my plow completely from scratch.The pump is off a yamaha inboard/outboard tilt pump. It maintains full ground clearance unlike my old one. Now I just need some snow to try it out on.

This is a video of the innovative TowPlow being used on Pennsylvania highways. Invented in Missouri and widely used there, the TowPlow is a steerable trailer equipped with a snow plow moldboard and cutting edge that allows the snow plow truck driver to plow a much wider path than could be done with the truck alone. Benefits of the TowPlow include fuel and labor savings as well as lower initial and maintenance costs as compared to an additional snow plow truck. As you can see, the TowPlow allows one driver to plow the width of pavement as would normally be plowed by two trucks. This results in a significant reduction in fuel usage and labor costs. In effect, the production the driver and snow plow truck are doubled. The TowPlow has been used on urban multi-lane highways and rural four-lane divided highways. The TowPlows can be equipped with a spreader for granular snow melting materials or a tank for dispensing liquids. This innovation truly allows the highway agencies that own them to do "more with less".

To some people, it brought back memories of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. That was when dust storms repeatedly struck the Great Plains. Texas state official Salvador Salinas says a return to Dust Bowl conditions is unlikely. SALVADOR SALINAS: "We have come a long way from those days where we had these occurrences as a common occurrence." Experts say one reason for the storms 80 years ago is that plowing was more common back then. In areas where the soil was broken up, it often was blown or washed away. Bram Govaerts has seen the effects of such erosion. He is with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico. BRAM GOVAERTS: "There is a percentage of area in certain states of Mexico where farming is no longer possible because we already eroded those areas." He suggests a different method. BRAM GOVAERTS: "Throwing away the plow. No longer plowing. No movement of soil." In the Texas High Plains, that means farmers cut just a thin strip of soil where the seed and fertilizer go. The rest of the field is left alone, says farmer David Ford. DAVID FORD: "Everything in between these rows is the organic matter left from the wheat straw, and which helps keep the ground covered, reduces soil erosion."
