Nice quality video recorded live in the studio from Top Of The Pops 1984. As heard on GTA IV. Scritti Politti are a British band, originally formed in 1977 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Although there have been various changes to the line-up, Cardiff-born singer-songwriter Green Gartside was the founding member of the band and the only member to have remained throughout the group's history. Initially a left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid 1980s, enjoying significant success in the record charts in the UK and the US. Scritti Politti originally consisted of Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer) as the lead vocalist, Nial Jinks as bass player, Tom Morley as drummer, and Matthew Kay as the manager who sometimes played the keyboard. Morley also created much of the artwork on the band's album covers. Gartside and Jinks had gone to school together in South Wales, and Gartside met Morley at Leeds Polytechnic, a college they both attended. They played one show as The Against in 1976, doing covers of Chelsea songs. Disillusioned and bored with art school, Gartside and Morley left in June 1978 and moved into a squat at 1 Carol Street in Camden Town, London. Jinks was invited to join the band. Gartside taught him how to play the bass in three weeks. Gartside recorded a demo of one of his new songs, "The "Sweetest Girl"", in January 1981, and the song was included on a compilation of ...

Solo version of Scritti Politti's 1988 single Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy), played on a Wurlitzer electric piano. It's in the key of Aflat. The original version is from the album Provision and features a trumpet solo by Miles Davis, which I have clumsily tried to play here.

Finally I got myself to do a bass along video to the best Funk/Pop album from the 80's. I found it very difficult to do this one, as the arrangements and sounds are impossible to replicate. I also couldn't make up my mind which track to pick, so I did them all (well most of 'm) If I were to be marooned on a deserted island and I was allowed to only bring one CD with me, Cupid & Psyche 85 would be the one. This album is unparalleled. The whole production is just incredible and every single track is brilliantly put together. I don't know what these guys were thinking at the time, but I still have no clue how they got it to sound this tight, fat and dynamic. That combined with amazing songs and lyrics, this album will never bore. I used Logic to construct the whole backing track, using vocal samples from re-mixes and Fairlight CMI samples from JJ Jeczalik's Art Of Sampling CD. Drums are Addictive Drums, both acoustic drums and Reel Machines. The Miles Davis trumpet comes from the Korg TR-Rack. Guitar sounds are all Logic. All the analog synth sounds are Prophet-5 and Jupiter-8. Songs included in the Medley are: The Word Girl Small Talk Absolute Perfect Way Wood Beez Hypnotize Perfect Way (reprise piano solo) Love Of A Lifetime (Chakakhan)

Solo arrangement of Scritti Politti's ballad A Little Knowledge, taken from the 1985 album Cupid And Psyche 85, played on a Wurlitzer electric piano. The verse starts in the key of F-sharp major and then modulates, very abruptly and slightly uncomfortably, into G major for the chorus, before going back to F-sharp major for the next verse.

... at the Victoria in Dalston 8/12/11. Opener from Green at this intimate gig (150 tickets). At the beginning he's saying he might forget some of the words. After he said when he wrote it he had in mind that Kraftwerk would play it and Gregory Isaacs would sing it. They approached both. Isaacs' people said yes. They didn't hear back from Kraftwerk. Years later he met two of the guys from Kraftwerk and asked whether the message had got through to the band. They said, "yes, but we don't like reggae". A great night with mince pies, Green's wife's home-made cocktails and pass the parcel with the band's favourite books (I didn't win).
