Through monumental effort, we managed to keep Kevin Pollak's appearance a complete secret to him, and when Kevin first stepped out, Dan didn't break out of it. - The total length of the hypnosis ...

Ben Pollack and his Californians, Benny Goodman - 'Deed I Do (1927)

Ben Pollack (June 22, 1903 - June 7, 1971) was a drummer and bandleader from the mid 1920s through the swing era. His eye for talent led him to either discover or employ, at one time or another, musicians such as Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Glenn Miller, Jimmy McPartland and Harry James. This ability earned him the nickname "Father of Swing". Born in Chicago, Illinois to a well-to-do family, Pollack was largely self taught as a drummer, and was afforded the opportunity to become the drummer for the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, a top jazz outfit, in the early '20s. In 1924 he played for several outfits, including some on the west coast, which ultimately led to his forming a band there in 1925. One of the earliest members of his band was Gil Rodin, a saxophonist whose sharp business acumen served him well later as an executive for the Music Corporation of America (MCA). Rodin also served as the "straw boss' for Pollack along with the young arranger-trombonist Glenn Miller. Already recognized as immensely talented on the clarinet, sixteen-year-old Benny Goodman began working with Pollack in 1925 as well. In 1926, Pollack recorded for Victor. Many of his records were good sellers. From about 1928, with involvement with Irving Mills, members of Pollack's band moonlighted at Plaza-ARC and recorded a vast quantity of hot dance and out-and-out jazz for their dime store labels (Banner, Perfect, Domino, Cameo, Lincoln, Romeo, and others using colorful names like Mills' Merry Makers ...

Theatrical trailer for the memorable screen romance, THE WAY WE WERE, starring Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand. The film was a box-office smash and received six Academy Award nominations, including Barbara Streisand's second for "Best Actress". Roaring Twenties: Ben Pollack Orch.- On With The Dance! 1929

Ben POLLACK born 1903 in Chicago to a family in the fur business. He was a talented drummer and a bandleader, active from 1926 (Ben Pollack and His Californians) thru 1930s (Ben Pollack and His Park Central Orch., Ben Pollack and His Orchestra, Ben Pollack And His Pick-A-Rib Boys). He had an excellent ear for the music as well as for the future luminaires and his bands always included such personae in the Word of jazz as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Harry James,, Mugsy Spanier, Jack Teagarden,, Frank Teschemacher or Bud Freeman. From the Dixieland style, that he favoured, leading bands in New Orleans, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Ben Pollack in 1930s became the leader of the swing band working with then unknown Harry James and Freddie Slack, as well as trumpeter Shorty Sherock, clarinetist Irving Fazola, and saxophonist Dave Matthews . In the early 1930s Pollack fell in love with vocalist Doris Robbins, and the two eventually married. As he began to concentrate more and more on her career and less on the orchestra his musicians became disgruntled. In 1940s Ben Pollack was a director of the touring band behind music/comedy star Chico Marx - though he may have had an all-star line-up he was unable to keep most of them for very long. In 1971 he died , hanging himself in his flat in Palm Springs, California. Recording: Ben Pollack & His Park Central Orchestra, voc. Scrappy Lambert - On With the Dance! Ben Pollack Orchestra - Sally of My Dreams (1929)

Ben Pollack (June 22, 1903 - June 7, 1971) He was one of the more successful white band leaders of the late 1920s. His orchestras featured many future Jazz stars such as Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden and Jimmy McPartland. While his orchestras were basically commercial dance bands they also gave soloists plenty of freedom in determining the shape of the music. Pollack played in several bands in Chicago before joining the Friar's Society Orchestra in 1921. In 1926 he started his own band which played at the hotels in Chicago and then relocated to California in 1927, and then to New York where it found a home at the Park Central Hotel. Victor signed the band up in 1926 and they recorded with that label until 1929. The band underwent numerous personnel changes until its demise in 1934. Pollack continued to lead bands into the 1940s including one for comedian Chico Marx, and owned his own record company called Jewel. He also owned restaurants in Hollywood and Palm Springs where he played from time to time. Pollack committed suicide by hanging himself in 1971.
