My son Joshua was born three months premature weighing 1.5 lbs. He had five surgerys before he turned one. With the strength of God, Joshua has amazed doctors, family, and friends. He has no complications and is now a healthy 2yr. old. Joshua passed away on 1/22/10 by a drowning accident.

This is the story of our miracle twins who were born 4 months premature and have beat the odds. Our babies only weighed 1 lb 6 ounces and 1 lb 8 ounces at birth. Both of our babies fought to survive! They both had become septic after their intestines perforated. Our little girl had a severe bleed in her brain, bi-lateral grade 3/4 (4 is the worst). They also had many other life saving procedures/treatments during the 4 + months in the hospital NICU. The doctors only gave them a very small chance of survival. Thank god for miracles because both of our babies beat the odds. They are delayed as expected, but are generally healthy. They are 21 months old and are both walking, climbing and babbling. Speech is one of the major concerns. We feel blessed and want to give hope to the other families that may be going through a similiar situation. We are also honored to be the 2010 March for Babies Ambassador Family for Monroe County, PA.

A southern Alberta community is remembering a girl described by teachers as a four-foot-tall teen with a 10-foot-high attitude who defied the odds of a rare genetic disease that causes premature aging. Ashley Hegi, 17, was one of 53 people in the world — and three in Canada — with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. There is no known cure, and most children with the condition usually die around age 13. Hegi, who lived in Coalhurst about 200 kilometres southeast of Calgary, was admitted to a Lethbridge hospital on Friday. She died on Tuesday, one month before her 18th birthday and three weeks before her high school graduation. But friends at Coalhurst High School said it wasn't Hegi's condition that made her stand out. "When you talked to Ashley, you didn't think about her being sick; you just thought about how wonderful she was," said friend Lais Morrow on Thursday. "I don't know how she'd gone through everything she'd gone through and not been bitter at all, like that we ever saw at least." A Paraguayan father mourning the death of his premature baby was shocked to learn his son was still alive when he heard crying coming from the temporary box holding the infant's supposed remains. "I opened it to look at his remains and found that the baby was breathing," Jose Alvarenga, 25, recounted. "I began to cry." The infant, born nearly three months early on Thursday and weighing just over a pound, was rushed back to the same hospital, Central del Instituto de Previsión Social, where he had been born hours before. Staff there had reportedly spent an hour trying to revive him after birth but declared him dead after being unable to detect any vital signs. The father says he was at the family home in Fernando de la Mora for the baby's wake when he reportedly heard crying from the box. The mother, Isabel Rossana Cáceres, 24, was still in hospital recovering from the birth. The infant is in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
