Prescription Drug Abuse / PSA Video

Prescription Drug Abuse / PSA Video. From the public domain. Most people take medicines only for the reasons their doctors prescribe them. But an estimated 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. This is prescription drug abuse. It is a serious and growing problem. Abusing some prescription drugs can lead to addiction. You can develop an addiction to: Narcotic painkillers Sedatives and tranquilizers Stimulants Experts don't know exactly why this type of drug abuse is increasing. The availability of drugs is probably one reason. Doctors are prescribing more drugs for more health problems than ever before. Online pharmacies make it easy to get prescription drugs without a prescription, even for youngsters. Some people experiment with prescription drugs because they think they will help them have more fun, lose weight, fit in, and even study more effectively. Prescription drugs can be easier to get than street drugs: Family members or friends could have a prescription. But prescription drugs are also sometimes sold on the street like other illegal drugs. A 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that among all youths aged 12 to 17, 6% had tried prescription drugs for recreational use in the last month. Why? Some people think that prescription drugs are safer and less addictive than street drugs. After all, these are drugs that moms, dads, and even kid brothers and sisters use. The Abuse of Prescription Drugs / Documentary Video

The abuse of prescription drugs is quickly becoming an epidemic. They're easy to get and simple to distribute. Gone are the days when people need to go to a seedy street corner to get high. Now, they just need to go to a medicine cabinet or visit the doctor. While many communities are just beginning to figure out how to handle this legal drug problem, anti-drug groups in Tennessee have had a head start. For years, Tennessee held the unwanted distinction as the nations top state for prescription drug abuse. That is changing, thanks to hard work and cooperation. The people from Tennessee will share their experiences during this hour-long MCTFT broadcast. There will be no expert panel discussion, just advice from the people in the field. Learn how citizens in Tennessee discovered the problem and took control. Hear from coalition leaders, law enforcement, doctors, pharmacists, insurance executives, and others. See what they did so you can bring it into your own communities. Learning Objectives: See how anti-drug groups in Tennessee discovered the prescription drug problem Find out how cooperation is making a difference Learn what law enforcement officers are seeing and how they are adapting to the new drug problems Hear how health care providers are trying to protect themselves and their patients From the public domain, courtesy of the Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training (MCTFT)

The 1200% Increase in my Prescription Drug Costs

In which Hank is pissed off because the price of his prescription drugs went up 1200% in one month. So he asks nerdfighteria to write a nice letter to Roger Boissonneault at rboissonneault@wcrx.com. If you could ask him why the price went up so much, why the program expired four months early, and why no effort was made to contact my doctor about these dramatic changes, that would be fantastic. Also, whatever else you want to say. I feel a little bit like this was a heroin deal "first time's free" kind of thing. Apparently, drug companies have the same marketing strategies as drug dealers...nice to know they're in such good company.

Prescription Drugs--Me-Too Drugs, 2/7

www.youtube.com www.encognitive.com Angell disputes the industry's reputation as an "engine of innovation," arguing that the top US drug makers spend 2.5 times as much on marketing and administration as they do on research. At least a third of the drugs marketed by industry leaders were discovered by universities or small biotech companies, writes Angell, but they're sold to the public at inflated prices. She cites Taxol, the cancer drug discovered by the National Institutes of Health, but sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb for $20000 a year, reportedly 20 times the manufacturing cost. The company agreed to pay the NIH only 0.5 percent in royalties for the drug. The majority of the new products the industry puts out, says Angell, are "me-too" drugs, which are almost identical to current treatments but "no better than drugs already on the market to treat the same condition." Around 75 percent of new drugs approved by the FDA are me-too drugs. They can be less effective than current drugs, but as long as they're more effective than a placebo, they can get the regulatory green light. http

Whitney Houston Died From Prescription Drugs, Not Drowning

New details surrounding Whitney's Houston's death emerge as sources of Whitney Houston's family members speak out. On Saturday, Whitney was found in the bathtub at the Beverly Hilton, where she was getting ready for a Pre-Grammy party. Sources say that the family was told by LA County Coroner officials the singer did not die from drowning, but rather from what appears to be a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol. While there were no illegal substances found in Houston's hotel room, there were prescription drugs. Coroner's officials informed the family that there was not enough water in Whitney's lungs, therefore she did not drown. They also say a heart attack is a likely cause. Officials are saying there is no evidence to suspect foul play. Although the autopsy has been concluded, toxicology results could take weeks to come back. Now, Whitney's mother has arranged to take her body back to Atlanta, as early a tomorrow

Marketing Disease and Pushing Drugs, 1/7

www.youtube.com www.encognitive.com Doctors might not be crazy about the idea, but patients are walking into their offices asking for specific drugs. They have heard about them on TV or read about them in magazines. Askier travels blissfully down a mountain of ragweed, his skis in perfect position as pollen scatters across a parched mountain landscape. Quick--is this an advertisement for weed killer, a new type of skiing, or an allergy drug? Unless you've stayed away from magazines and TV this year, you probably know this is an ad for Allegra, an allergy drug manufactured by Hoechst Marion Roussel, Inc. The caption reads "This allergy season, live with ahhhbandon. Ahhh! Allegra!" The Allegra print campaign is one of a multitude of highly visible prescription' drug advertisements aimed directly at the public. Ever since federal regulations changed laws governing the advertising of prescription drugs in the 1980s, such advertising efforts have taken off. Manufacturers spent $137 million on direct-to-consumer drug advertising on television alone in 1996, according to IMS America and Nielsen Media Research. Advertising is also extensive in most major consumer magazines. "They're spending a ton of money" says Jack Trout, a marketing expert based in Greenwich, Connecticut, and author of The New Positioning: The Latest on the World's Number 1 Business Strategy.
