Rome clashes: Video of Italy cops beating protesters with batons

In Italy, students clashed with police when thousands of people marched in protest against budget cuts and a lack of jobs. It followed new Prime Minister Mario Monti's maiden speech in parliament, where he pledged to push through austerity measures, which will mean huge sacrifices for ordinary people. The cracks are widening elsewhere in the Eurozone, with a fresh blow from one of its strongest members. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Italy Erupting - Protesters Clash With Riot Police Over Austerity Measures Italian anti-riot policemen clash with protesters as they demonstrate against the government's economic policy measures near the Italian parliament in Piazza Montecitorio in Rome, Italy, 14 September 2011. Italy's Parliament gave final approval to Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government's austerity measures, a combination of higher taxes, pension reform and slashed spending that sparked street protests in Rome. The Chamber of Deputies passed the package by a vote of 314-300. The Senate, Parliament's upper chamber, already approved the measures. Hundreds of demonstrators, some unleashing smoke bombs and others hurling paint, clashed with police in riot gear in the cobblestone squares and streets near Parliament as lawmakers were voting on the measures designed to fend off a financial crisis threatening much of Europe. Earlier in the day, Berlusconi's government, whose allies had squabbled publicly over the package, won a crucial confidence vote called to discourage debate and hasten approval. European Central Bank and European Union leaders in Brussels had pressed Rome for quick passage to calm markets roiled by a crisis that could endanger the entire 17-member eurozone. But the planned cuts and taxes have angered many Italians, fueling protests similar to those in other European nations grappling with the economic crisis. Greece on fire: police and protestors clash in Athens

Riot police fired tear gas at youths hurling rocks near the Greek finance ministry in Athens on Tuesday, as anger bubbled over on the first day of a general strike, and parliament debated new cost-cutting measures. Hooded youths ripped up paving stones and set rubbish bins on fire in central Athens as police gave chase and fired tear gas and stun grenades. Peaceful protesters nearby braved thick clouds of tear gas to stage an outdoor street party, banging pots and pans in time to music on loudspeakers. Some of them made human chains to protect the peaceful crowd from the rioters and the riot police battles, pushing back the police lines out of Syntagma Square, outside of the Greek parliament. Staff at upscale hotels handed out surgical masks to tourists and helped them with rolling luggage past the rioting, over ground strewn with smashed-up marble and cement paving stones. Youths torched a satellite truck parked near parliament. The fire caused a freezer at a neighboring kiosk to explode, and hooded youths ducked behind the burning truck to help themselves to ice-cream cones. Marbles were smashed by rioters to use as projectiles while popular McDonald's fast food restaurant was vandalized by protesters.

Protesters break into bank, clash with cops as London march turns violent

Follow latest updates at twitter.com and www.facebook.com Tens of thousands of mostly peaceful demonstrators streamed into central London on Saturday to march against government budget cuts, with a small breakaway group smashing its way into a bank, breaking windows and spray painting logos on the walls. Another group of black-clad protesters hurled paint bombs and ammonia-filled light bulbs at police. Organisers of the march estimated that at least 250000 people from across the country were peacefully joining in the demonstration, the biggest protest in London since a series of rallies against the Iraq war in 2003. Police said they were not giving out crowd estimates.

Protesters violently attack Iranian embassy and clashes with police - Denmark 13 May 2010

Protest at the Iranian embassy in Copenhagen triggered by the recent execution of five kurdish/iranian political prisoners in Iran. About 100 people attacked the embassy and police with stones, police spokesman Mads Firlings said. The police initially responded with pepper spray and then called in reinforcements, including police dogs, he said. Four demonstrators were arrested, and one officer was lightly wounded, he said. The demonstrations began peacefully but turned violent when a representative of the Iranian Embassy "provoked the demonstrators" with "very bad words in Persian," said Hilsen Mahmoud, the demonstration organizer and a member of the group Free Iran Society. In response, the demonstrators attacked the embassy, he said. Text source: edition.cnn.com

Video of France riots, burning tires as pension protesters clash with police

Strikes across France intensified on Friday with police firing tear gas at protesters in the city of Lyon. About 1000 high school students went on strike, overturning rubbish bins, smashing bus stops, and setting fire to stacks of free newspapers. The students and labour unions see President Nicolas Sarkozy's pension reform - raising the retirement age from 60 to 62 - as an attack on their well-deserved social protections. Workers at all 12 of France's fuel producing refineries have also joined the protest. Strikers burned tires outside an oil refinery in Donges, near Nantes in western France.

Masked youths clash with police as pension reform protests get radical in France

Masked youths clashed with police and set fires in cities across France on Tuesday as protests against a proposed hike in the retirement age took an increasingly radical turn. President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to crack down on "troublemakers" and guarantee public order, raising the possibility of more confrontations with young rioters after a week of disruptive but largely nonviolent demonstrations. More than 200 protests and one-day strikes by workers in sectors across the French economy were planned around the country over a bill raising the retirement age to 62. In many cities, protesters were being joined by young people who appeared to be seizing an opportunity to lash out at police. Protests turned violent in the central city of Lyon, where rioters smashed several store windows and torched rubbish bins and cars. Police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse trouble makers.

It's over a long-running dispute over housing evictions. Human rights groups say the government kicked people out of their homes so they could sell prime real estate to foreign and local businesses. Cambodian protesters clashed with police on Thursday over a long running dispute for a luxury housing estate. Rights groups and foreign aid donors have complained that state officials are forcibly evicting farmers, villagers and city residents to sell prime land to foreign and local businesses. Police armed with shields, sticks and electric batons broke up the group of about 100 protesters who had gathered in front of Phnom Penh City Hall. [Chan Tha, Protester]: "I am suffering. I am a Khmer like others. Why are they doing this to the people? They fight, they beat people with no mercy, they do not find solutions for the people." The estate is to be built by a Chinese developer and a well-connected Cambodian tycoon. [Am Sam Ath, Human Rights Activist]: "I think that the authorities were too harsh on the protesters. I know that they want to restore the public order. But they should find another peaceful solution for everyone." According to a Cambodian group monitoring forced evictions, 30000 people were moved off their land last year. And an estimated 150000 more evictions are expected in the next few years ...

"295 deputies voted. 154 voted yes, 141, voted No. Thus the bill of the finance ministry passes in principle by a majority," said Grigoris Niotis, the vice president of the parliament on Wednesday. The bill, proposing new taxes and additional cuts in pensions and wages among other things, has to be put to a second round of vote on Thursday before turning into legislation. The protests broke out on Wednesday, with more than 100000 people rallying in the capital Athens, marking the beginning of a 48-hour general strike. The industrial action paralyzed the country, having been joined by banks, schools, shops, and public services. "We just can't take it anymore. There is desperation, anger and bitterness," said Nikos Anastasopoulos, one of the protesters, referring to nearly two years of austerity measures imposed upon the people by the government. The demonstrations quickly turned violent as riot police confronted the protesters with carcinogenic tear gas canisters and stun grenades and the protesters started responding with stones. France Unrest: Street battles in Lyon, blocked Marseille airport, protests in Paris

It's another day of unrest in France, where Marseille's airport has been blocked by protesters and further demonstrations are planned in Paris. It's all part of the anger at proposals to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62, which would still be one of the lowest in Europe. Violence broke out in Lyon on Thursday morning, where police chased rampaging youths who overturned a car. Lyon also saw clashes on Wednesday between youths and police over French President Nicolas Sarkozy's austerity measures. French protesters blockaded Marseille's airport on Thursday, ahead of a possible Senate vote on raising the retirement age. Hundreds of workers blocked all access to the main airport for about three hours. Students barricaded a Paris high school and planned protests nationwide later on Thursday, as the Senate wraps up protracted debate on a reform that Sarkozy calls crucial to his presidency. At the Turgot high school in central Paris approximately 150 students barracked the front doors of the school with rubbish bins.

Chile police clash with student protesters

At least 25000 university student protesters have marched through the streets of Santiago, Chile's capital, calling for reforms in education, local news reported. Police fired water cannons to disperse demonstrators, after some students broke through police barricades and others hurled stones at anti-riot officers. Fifteen people were arrested, according to authorities. The students have been pushing the government for years to boost funding in a country with among the highest university fees in the world. Chilean university students receive only 15 percent state funding, the lowest of all countries part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. When taking into consideration the average family income in Chile, university fees are nearly three times higher than the United States, Japan, and Australia. Chile's president Sebastian Pinera has promised more scholarships and said that debt for 100000 poor students would be recalculated, amongst other reforms, but student leaders say it is not enough. "Today we are calling for the recovery of public education, equal access to education, quality, greater financing in the sector and, as always, regulation of the private sector and with greater involvement of the state to improve education to stop putting thousands and thousands of families into debt. We want greater participation from students, workers and teachers in the decisions being made at the universities," Catholic University Student Federation ...

Azerbaijani Turks of Iran peacefully protest against discriminative environmental, ethnic-cultural and economic policy of Iranian regime. August 27, 2011 -- In protest to diversion of many rivers that feed one of the largest salty lake in the world, Lake Orumieh in north western Iran residents of the city of Orumieh poured to the streets of the city despite the heavy presence of security and anti-riot forces on Saturday afternoon. The security forces have cracked down on peaceful protesters and used tear gas to disperse them resulting in the injury of many protesters. This latest protest in the city of Urmia started following a rejection of proposed legislation by the Iranian parliament that would transfer urgent waters into the Lake Urmia to save a great lake from disappearing due to damming and development. The long popular lake, home to migrating flamingos, pelicans and gulls, has shrunken by 60 percent and could disappear entirely in just a few years, a Washington Post report in May confirmed; experts say drained by drought, misguided irrigation policies, development and the damming of rivers that feed it. Reporter Dick Brennan and photographer Roy Isen got caught in the middle of an altercation between police officers and a group of protesters, at the end of a day spent covering the ongoing demonstrations in lower Manhattan. Brennan was struck in the stomach with a baton and Isen was hit in the eyes with pepper spray. Many are asking, in light of these videos and videos from last week showing white shirted officers as primary aggressors, why are the high ranking officers appearing more aggressive than the rank and file officers? Generally speaking, departments that have problems disciplining their officers for excessive force still have to do something to get cops that show a pattern of brutality off the street or else they risk more civil litigation or a pattern/practice investigation by the feds. So, instead of firing cops, they promote them off of the street to supervisory roles... which could be one explanation for the white shirts being more aggressive here. If you don't believe that explanation consider the next report...
