Bill McKibben: Why I Spent 2 Days in Jail Protesting the Keystone XL Tar Sands Oil Pipeline

DemocracyNow.org - Fifty-two environmental activists were arrested Monday in front of the White House as part of an ongoing protest calling on the Obama administration to reject a permit for the 1700-mile Keystone XL pipeline project, which would deliver Canada tar sands oil to refineries in Texas, and rather focus on developing clean energy. An estimated 2000 people have signed up to hold sit-ins and commit other acts of civil disobedience outside the White House everyday for the next two weeks — 162 have already been arrested since Saturday. Also joining the protest are indigenous First Nations communities in Canada and landowners along the Keystone XL pipeline's planned route. An editorial in Sunday's New York Times joined in calling on the State Department to reject the pipeline, noting that the extraction of petroleum from the tar sands creates far more greenhouse emissions than conventional production. Meanwhile, oil-industry backers of the project emphasize what they say are the economic benefits of the $7 billion proposal. As the Obama administration remains undecided whether to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, Democracy Now! speaks with Bill McKibben in Washington, DC, where he was released Monday after spending two nights in jail. He is part of Tar Sands Action, a group of environmentalists, indigenous communities, labor unions and scientific experts, calling for action to stop the project. Video: Mass arrests at Moscow rally protesting vote results

Around 600 opposition supporters have been detained at an unsanctioned rally in the heart of Moscow. Supporters of both the government and the opposition have flocked to Triumfalnaya Square, which has been cordoned off by police. Among those detained and taken to nearby police buses are well-known bloggers and opposition leaders. Several journalists have also been arrested, and according to their social network posts, some have been beaten as well. Those at the scene are providing live updates of the rally via Twitter; with many saying there are at least 5000 opposition supporters, 2000 pro-government youth group members and around one thousand police officers. Tens of thousands of villagers are protesting in Wukan, in Guangdong Province. Now the situation has become a standoff as villagers have kicked out both local officials and police. That came after the suspicious death of one villager in police custody. Here's the latest. The over twenty-thousand residents of the village of Wukan in south China's Guangdong Province have expelled all local Communist Party authorities, including police, and blocked road access to the village. The British newspaper The Telegraph was able to get a journalist on the ground in Wukan on Tuesday. Malcom Moore called the current incident the first time on record that the Party has "lost all control" in a situation of "open revolt." This marks the latest escalation in an ongoing confrontation between villagers and local Communist Party officials they've called corrupt and abusive. For three months, Wukan residents have been staging occasional large-scale protests against a longstanding series of abuses committed by local Party officials. Keith Olbermann Reads The Statement Released By The Wall Street Protesters - 2011-10-05 Transcript: nycga.cc The Official Declaration of the Occupation of Wall Street read by Keith Olbermann 10-05 2011 As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies. As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known. They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage. They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses. They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the ...

Overblown Drone: 'UFO' Over Protesters in Moscow, Russia - Dec. 2011

An excerpt from RussiaToday: "A UFO spying on Muscovites protesting against parliamentary election fraud? Apparently so -- at least that was the best explanation some British news outlets could give to the latest technical solutions in use among Russian bloggers. "An 'unidentified flying object'...spotted above Moscow during an anti-government protest." "Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters...witnessed the 'UFO' hover above them on Saturday." "Confused onlookers among the 25000-strong crowd filmed the strange object on their phones." "Onlookers...climbed trees to grab a closer look at the mysterious craft." And so on, and so forth. Well, being among those tens of thousands of "confused onlookers", the only kind of debate I can recall in regards to the "object" was whether it was the police monitoring the security situation on the scene of mass protests through a drone camera or journalists taking aerial photos for their reports (or broadcasts)." rt.com The silly article by Daily Mail UK: "Russian protesters distracted during Moscow demo against Putin... by 'UFO' flying over Kremlin." www.dailymail.co.uk telegraph.co.uk ************************************************************************ Russia just totally PWNed you, UK - what are you going to do about it?

The Information and Communications Technologies Authority, known by its Turkish initials as BTK, is going to require Internet service providers to offer consumers four choices for filtering the Internet that would limit access to many sites, beginning in August. Protesters in Taksim Square in Istanbul called the action, which regulators say is intended to protect minors, an assault on personal freedom and liberty. The BTK, however, has said that Internet users will still be able to access all content if they choose the "standard" option for filtering. The other filtering options are labeled as "children," "family" and "domestic." Tayfun Acarer, the chairman of the BTK, told reporters this month that the change came about because of complaints and demands for safer Internet use in Turkey. Thousands of protesters in Taksim Square, who were organized through a Facebook page, chanted, "Yes, we ban!" In Ankara, the capital, people cheered, "The ...

Occupy Wall Street - Best Rant Or Speech YET! - End The Fed

Mirrored from: www.youtube.com The protesters have camped out for two-weeks now against what they believe is an unfair financial system that unfairly benefits the mega-wealthy and corporations and hampers economic prospects for the poor. This weekend witnessed the movement's second weekend march against inequality and the march quickly turned violent and scores of people got arrested. The march took place between Zuccotti Park and Union Square. Police began making arrests when people from the march began to stray on to the street, blocking traffic. Hero Vincent, 21, was one such protester that was arrested over the weekend. Vincent has been part of the protest since day one and explained how he came under attack. Vincent explained that he went to get a drink and by the time he came back from the store he saw that the marching group had slowed down and scattered. Vincent told The Christian Post, "From the second I got there, it was like a bomb had just went off, and papers were flying in the air, people where getting thrown around, screams, cries, people getting pepper sprayed." Vincent claimed that as he went to help out another protester police caught him and punched him in his face, kicked him in his stomach, hit him with a baton, and eventually arrested him. Nevertheless, Vincent told the CP, "I don't regret it, I would let it happen all over again because more supporters have been gathering as a result." Egyptian soldiers clashed with hundreds of rock-throwing protesters in central Cairo for a second consecutive day on Saturday, in a resurgence of turmoil just days after millions voted in parliamentary elections. Soldiers hurled stones from rooftops and fired water from hoses in a crackdown that has left at least eight people dead. The violence has brought to the fore the simmering tensions between security officers and activists demanding an end to military rule, and threatened to spark a new cycle of fighting after deadly clashes between youth revolutionaries and security forces in November that lasted for days and left more than 40 dead.
