The Ten Most Wanted : Celebrities Who Promote Harmful Pseudoscience 1-2

The Ten Most Wanted : Celebrities Who Promote Harmful Pseudoscience skeptoid.com Skeptoid is a weekly podcast dedicated to furthering knowledge by blasting away the widespread pseudosciences that infect popular culture. Each weekly episode focuses on a single phenomenon — an urban legend, a paranormal claim, alternative therapy, or something just plain stupid — that you've heard of, and that you probably believe in. Skeptoid attempts to expose the folly of belief in non-evidence based phenomena, and more importantly, explains the factual scientific reality. From the sublime to the startling, no topic is sacred, politically incorrect though that may be.

Michael Shermer - The Threat of Pseudoscience

This half hour lecture is from the McGill University's Lorne Trottier Public Science Symposium on the confrontation and threat of pseudoscience in contemporary society. As a leading figure in this movement, Dr. Michael Shermer is more than qualified to speak on many of the issues. His down-to-earth style coupled with his laundry list of first hand encounters with the baloney of our day make this presentation (as well as many of his others) an absolute treat to watch. I myself do not own the copyright to this material. As stated previously, this was filmed, funded, and produced by McGill University, and so far as I can tell, this is their intellectual property. I have uploaded it here so that it may reach a greater audience and showcase the truly great work of the presenter and the hosts. If anyone should wish for me to take it down, I would oblige.

Alternative Medicine and Pseudoscience with Scott Gavura

Toronto. May 28, 2010. Despite the dramatic improvements in the extent and quality of our lives, largely owing to modern medicine, our current health care system has fostered a backlash, manifested in part by the emergence of non-science-based "alternative" health care practices . This trend has driven a need for dialogue on how best we should balance evidence-based decisions against demands for consumer choice - regardless of the science. In this presentation, Scott Gavura discusses how health care decision-making differs from all other goods and services, and how this impacts on the choices we make, both as individuals, and in aggregate. Through an interactive discussion, he facilitates a dialogue on the opportunities for science advocates to effect positive change in health at the patient- and population-level. Scott Gavura , BScPhm, MBA is passionate about improving the use of medications. As a pharmacist working in the Ontario cancer system, he scrutinizes and manages how very expensive cancer drugs are used. He also founded the Science-Based Pharmacy blog, to begin a discussion within and about the pharmacy profession's role in supporting science-based care. Scott has a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Toronto, and has completed a Accredited Canadian Hospital Pharmacy. James Randi - Investigating Pseudoscientific and Paranormal Claims

This hour long lecture is from the McGill University's Lorne Trottier Public Science Symposium on the confrontation and threat of pseudoscience in contemporary society. As one of the central figures in the area of "flim-flam," James Randi has exposed fraud, deceit, cheats, fakes, liars, and charlatans with effervescent ease. Trained as a magician, his insight into pseudoscience is much more into how people fool themselves and others into believing an array of tricks from the bag of a learned conjurer. In this lecture he gives examples of such tricks and examines how they relate to modern paranormal nonsense.

Psychiatry, is a pseudo-science - The Rosenhan Experiment - THUD, THUD

The Rosenhan experiment was a famous experiment into the validity of psychiatric diagnosis conducted by psychologist David Rosenhan in 1973. It was published in the journal Science under the title "On being sane in insane places. The study is considered an important and influential criticism of psychiatric diagnosis. Rosenhan's study was done in two parts. The first part involved the use of healthy associates or "pseudo patients" (three women and five men) who briefly simulated auditory hallucinations in an attempt to gain admission to 12 different psychiatric hospitals in five different states in various locations in the United States. All were admitted and diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. After admission, the pseudo-patients acted normally and told staff that they felt fine and had not experienced any more hallucinations. Hospital staff failed to detect a single pseudo-patient, and instead believed that all of the pseudopatients exhibited symptoms of ongoing mental illness. Several were confined for months. All were forced to admit to having a mental illness and agree to take antipsychotic drugs as a condition of their release. The second part involved an offended hospital challenging Rosenhan to send pseudo-patients to its facility, whom its staff would then detect. Rosenhan agreed, but sent no pseudopatients. Yet, out of 195 new patients in the following weeks, the staff identified 42 ordinary patients as impostors and suspected 48 more. The study concluded, "It ...

*Hot air* pseudoscience, carbon taxes, global servitude 1of2

From Fall of the Republic, a fantastic Alex Jones documentary (www.youtube.com Foundation-run environmentalism and carbon taxes are NOT about helping the environment. They're about creating a system of über-taxation and economic control over the middle and poor classes, thus impoverishing you further, in the establishment's race towards a two-class system, of the extremely rich versus the plain poor. They are about favoring investment banks and multinational corporations through carbon market, aka cap and trade, speculation. They are about stealing land and resources from small and mid-level proprietors to put those land and resources into the hands of government and corporations. And they are about creating a system of ultra-regulation, whereby each and every aspect of your life can be regulated according to "energy austerity" measures. They are about putting ever more power over your life on the hands of the state and of international, unchecked, oligarchic global organizations, such as the UN, the IMF and the World Bank. Protect the environment from REAL problems (real pollution, GM, toxic waste, etc) and, above all, protect liberty from those who will take it away in the name of power and a few dollars more. Say NO to fake environmentalism. By the way, these clips were made before CLIMATEGATE and a few more scandals of similar magnitude, which came to prove that Global Warming science is not only biased -- it's made up and manipulated, from top to bottom. Prof Jim Kehoe will be defending psychology as a mainstream science. Expect to be educated and entertained. The speakers will both have 15 minutes and then the floor will be opened so anyone can get into the ring!

The Pseudoscience of Charlene Werner

Generally, I wouldnt comment on the pseudoscience of homeopathy, but this video was just too much to pass up. Sorry for the depressing rant at the end, but its a message worth getting out: pseudoscience is dangerous—physically and intellectually. Charlene Werner (I refuse to distinguish her with the title of Dr.) is supposedly a developmental optometrist (maybe like Kent Hovind was a high school science teacher) specializing in light therapy and homeopathy. The 8 minute video I clip from is available here: www.youtube.com uploaded by XanSimpson. Werners attorney has since contacted and threatened XanSimpson with copyright infringement, so many are mirroring the video.

Physics Lecture:- UFOs and Pseudoscience

In this video, Dr.Nemiroff illustrates possible reasons behind why "pseudo-scientific" theories are very popular, and the science behind the existence of UFOs. Physics-X is a one of a kind course taught at Michigan Technological University, for credit. The course is aimed at upper level undergraduate students in Physics, however the concepts involved in the course are easily accessible to everyone. The coursedeals with some of the most extraordinary concepts in physics, most of which try to provide the Physics background behind some cool phenomena and theories like Time Travel, Special Relativity, Worm Holes and Black Holes, Quantum Mechanics, Parallel Universes, etc. Some of the concepts covered here underlie all of reality, and usually attracts a large number of very intelligent people, most of whom are not Physics majors. The course is taught in a very unique way, so as to use almost absolutely no math. The website in the description links to a forum for further discussion of the videos, as recent empirical evidence has proved that Youtube discussions might not be entirely constructive. The course is taught by Dr.Nemiroff, who is one of the co-creators of the APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day), which happens to be one of the most popular websites on the internet. He has more than 50 peer reviewed publications and more than 1500 references.
