I believe Terence to be a fairly good authority on such things. It's a good model to use, but not for the faint hearted as the dose and situation is for optimum humanity dissolution. We're now in the midst of a worldwide renaissance in psychedelic research, after decades of political suppression. Scientists from around the world will present their new findings at the largest psychedelic conference to take place in the US in 17 years, on April 15-18, 2010, in San Jose, CA (www.maps.org ). Even media reports, which usually mention in passing the widespread use of psychedelics by the counterculture in the 1960s, are more hopeful than alarming. In this talk, we'll review the factors which led to the backlash and the lessons to be learned, discuss how the FDA opened the door to research around the world, how the ghost of Timothy Leary was buried at Harvard, and how Burning Man struggles to respond to people who have difficult psychedelic experiences. This talk presented a brief overview of what psychedelics are, and several significant events in this field in the past four decades. A comparison will be made between molecular structures, and how they were related to the structure of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The receptors that have been identified as targets for psychedelics were discussed, and their brain localization noted, followed by a brief description of where the receptors are located, and what happens inside the cell after the receptor is activated by a psychedelic. Comments included about the different intracellular signaling pathways that can be activated, and which one(s) may be important for altering consciousness. A diagram of connectivity between key brain regions was discussed, which will show how some of the effects of psychedelics may be induced. Particular note will be made of the difficulty in identifying psychedelic molecules in the absence of human experimentation, which is illegal. There will then be a discussion of the use of drug discrimination to identify "LSD-like" molecules, and an example from the author's laboratory of the use of rigid analogues to identify important structural features of molecules such as LSD. Finally, a discussion was presented of the unique psychopharmacology of LSD, which occurs in two time-dependent phases, and the hypothesis that LSD may be converted in the body into an active metabolite that may be responsible for this time-dependent activity.

Dr. James Fadiman, who's been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s, joined Ian Punnett to discuss the newest research into the psychotherapeutic value of visionary drug use for increased personal awareness, spiritual epiphanies, and a host of serious medical conditions. Before it was banned, LSD was the most researched psychiatric drug on the planet, Fadiman said. It was first synthesized in 1938 from ergot fungi and is effective in miniscule doses of only millionths of a gram, he added. Mainstream researchers used LSD therapeutically to treat normal neuroses, alcoholism, and even autism before it was banned in 1966, Fadiman reported. Among hardcore alcoholics there was a 50% success rate, and even higher efficacy results for those with autism, he noted. Curiously, the main effect of LSD occurs after the drug itself has left the body, he revealed. It is thought to work by opening up one's "awareness capacity," Fadiman continued. Religious studies scholar Dr. Huston Smith learned this after taking LSD and having an experience which confirmed what he understood to be at the core of all religious faiths, Fadiman explained. "Psychedelics give you a kind of a different view of everything... they take you much more into observing your life," he said. A recent study at UCLA demonstrates how this inner journey can help people diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was here in the 1960s that he worked with Timothy Leary, conducting studies on the effects of psychedelics on human volunteers. Later, Ram Dass travelled to India and, finding an affinity with Hindu spirituality, adopted his new name. It was in India that Ram Dass met the Hindu guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Ram Dass talks here to the conference about his transition from social psychology to Hinu spirituality, and will discuss the importance that psychedelics had in regards to his changes in ideology. In 1964, together with Dr. Ralph Metzner and Dr. Timothy Leary, Ram Dass (as Dr. Richard Alpert) wrote "The Psychedelic Experience". Aldous Huxley had given them a copy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and during their work with psychedelics, the Harvard trio began to see parallels between their experiences and ancient Eastern mythology.

Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, Ph.D., is a pharmacologist and chemist known for his creation of new psychoactive chemicals. After serving in the Navy, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UC Berkeley in 1954. In the late 50s and early 60s he did post-doctorate work in psychiatry and pharmacology at UC San Francisco and worked briefly as research director at BioRad Laboratories before becoming a senior research chemist at Dow Chemical Co. In 1960, Sasha tried mescaline for the first time. He then experimented with synthesizing chemicals with structures similar to mescaline such as DOM. After leaving Dow in 1965 to become an independent consultant, Sasha taught public health at Berkeley and San Francisco General Hospital. In 1967, he was introduced to the possibilities of MDMA by an undergrad at San Francisco State University at a time when very few people had tried MDMA. Though Shulgin didn't invent the chemical, he did create a new synthesis process in 1976 and introduced the material to Leo Zeff, an Oakland psychologist who worked with psychedelics in his therapy practice. Zeff introduced hundreds of therapists to MDMA and word quickly spread outside the therapist community. Sasha's partner Ann Shulgin also conducted psychedelic therapy sessions with MDMA before it was scheduled in 1985. Since <b>...</b>
