We Don't Need No (Public) Education: Sheldon Richman on the Separation of School and State

Who likes the sound of a school bell? Sheldon Richman certainly doesn't. "Schools, by their structure, are preparing kids for some sort of authoritarian lifestyle," he says. Richman is critical of the school choice movement, saying that even in charter schools, money is still being provided by the state. He edits The Freeman and TheFreemanOnline.org, publications from the Foundation for Economic Education. Richman also is the author of Separating School and State and is a contributor to The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics. Topics include: Unschooling; critiquing charter schools; for-profit private schools; and home schooling. Shot by Zach Weissmueller and Hawk Jensen. Edited by Weissmueller, Jensen and Paul Detrick Approximately 5:40 minutes. Sheldon Richman on Separating School and State

Sheldon Richman is the editor of The Freeman (a magazine published by the Foundation for Economic Education), a senior fellow at the Future of Freedom Foundation, and a research fellow at the Independent Institute. In this lecture from one of the Future of Freedom Foundation's conferences in 1995, Richman describes the state of public education in modern America. He makes note of state education's Spartan origins, and refers to Israel Kirzner's work on entrepreneurship. Opening up public schools to entrepreneurship and competition, Richman says, would put the power to decide what and how their children learn back into parents' hands. This lecture is adapted from Richman's 1994 book of the same title, available here: www.amazon.com Download the .mp3 version of this lecture here: bit.ly

TEDxWallStreet - Michelle Rhee - Public Education - Are We Under, Over or Just Misspending?

Michelle began her career as a Teach for America corps member in Baltimore. In 1997, Michelle founded and led The New Teacher Project, which recruits and trains teachers to work in urban schools. From 2007 to 2010, Michelle served as chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools. Under her stewardship, DC schools experienced increases in student achievement, a rise in graduation rates and an upswing — for the first time in decades — in enrollment. "Working in education over the past twenty years, time after time I saw obstacles keeping kids from getting what they needed from their schools. Yes, there were challenges that were going to be difficult to overcome no matter what, but so many practices just didn't make sense and were completely within our power to change. When I tried to change them, I found out why the status quo had persisted for so long. Groups that put the interests of adults in the system first were driving the conversation, and they were backed by big dollars and political power. What we needed was a collective voice solely representing kids' best interests, because the sense of balance was completely gone. I started StudentsFirst to change that. Schools exist to give kids the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed, and EVERY decision has to revolve around that." Public "Education" has become indoctrination and distraction

People are not being educated they're being tested for levels of obedience. School is about memorizing what you are told short term and repeating it. The bulk of how you are graded is by completely daily busy work. This is for the work force the most important quality in a worker bee actually is obedience.

Steven Brill on How to Fix Public Schools

"[Teaching] is the only workplace, the only occupation, where by and large you are not paid, promoted, recognized, measured in any way having to do with your performance, only having to do with how long you've been breathing," says journalist and media entrepreneur Steven Brill. His new book, Class Warfare, chronicles the rise of a reform movement that's bringing a measure of accountability and choice to public schools. The book grew out of Brill's widely read 2009 New Yorker piece about the "rubber room," a holding pen for New York City teachers who couldn't be fired after they were removed from their classrooms for poor performance. Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie sat down with Brill at his office in New York City. Approximately 7 minutes. Camera by Jim Epstein and Anthony Fisher; edited by Epstein. The True Cost of Public Education

What is the true cost of public education? According to a new study by the Cato Institute, some of the nation's largest public school districts are underreporting the true cost of government-run education programs. www.cato.org Cato Education Analyst Adam B. Schaeffer explains that the nations five largest metro areas and the District of Columbia are blurring the numbers on education costs. On average, per-pupil spending in these areas is 44 percent higher than officially reported. Districts on average spent nearly $18000 per student and yet claimed to spend just $12500 last year. It is impossible to have a public debate about education policy if public schools can't be straight forward about their spending.

Teachers Matter: Rethinking How Public Schools Identify, Reward, and Retain Great Educators

In Teachers Matter, Marcus A. Winters, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, argues that our failure to identify and reward high-quality teachers has been devastating for public school students. The question is, how do we sort out the good teachers from the bad? Winters shows the shortcomings of the current system, which relies on credentials and longevity, and spells out a series of reforms based on results achieved in the classroom. For the first time, standardized test results offer an objective, reliable measure of student proficiency that can be tied to an individual teacher. Sure to be controversial, Winters's plan will be of interest to the education community, policy makers, and parents concerned about the future of education in America.

Songs of the BC Public Education System, 2011

-produced by Under-Funded Records, BC. -featuring the collective voice of BC Teachers -special guests: George Abbott and Christy Clark Despite our significant court victory on Bills 27 and 28 last April, the government still refuses to restore the learning conditions that were stripped from our collective agreements nearly a decade ago. Without the firm limits in place, the government was able to take the equivalent of $336 million away from public schools every year for a decade. Nearly six months have gone by since this legislation was ruled unconstitutional, yet students are still waiting for the support and resources they need. In the absence of the firm guarantees in collective agreements and corresponding funding, conditions for students and teachers have steadily declined and the system has been robbed of the funding that's desperately needed. If those firm collective agreement provisions were in place today, we would have approximately 3500 more teachers in the system, teachers helping to provide our students with the support they need.

Good Intentions 1of3 Introduction and Public Schools with Walter Williams

Walter Williams' PBS documentary Good Intentions based on his book, The State Against Blacks (1982). The documentary was very controversial at the time it was released and led to many animosities and even threats of murder. In Good Intentions, Dr. Williams examines the failure of the war on poverty and the devastating effect of well meaning government policies on blacks asserting that the state harms people in the US more than it helps them. He shows how government anti-poverty programs have often locked people into poverty making the points that: - being forced to attend 3rd rate public schools leave students unprepared for working life - minimum wages prevent young people from obtaining jobs at an early age - licensing and labor laws have had the effect of restricting entrance of blacks into the skilled trades and unions - the welfare system creates perverse incentives for the poor to make bad choices they otherwise would not Dr. Williams presents the following solutions to these problems: Failing Public Schools - Give parents greater control over their children's education by setting up a tuition tax credit or voucher system to broaden competition in turn revitalizing both public and non-public schools Minimum Wages - Remove the minimum wage from youngsters to give more young people the chance to learn the world of work at an early age instead spending their free time idle an possibly falling into the habits of the street Restrictive Labor Laws, Jobs Programs ...
