I believe that eggs are events - not simply objects. They are the confluence of primal life forces, sexual energies, that create new life - new beginnings. The shells are memories of these events. I have worked on eggshells since I was a child, learning the traditional Ukrainian art of pysanky from my mother. Pysanky are talismen created through batiking designs with specific intentions to use the egg's life-power for a desired result. This cultic use of eggs informs my work to this day - for I consider egg making a sacred magical art. Since 1990 I have used this folk art to explore my fantasies, desires and cosmology. During this period I have manipulated traditional processes with innovative dyeing & brush techniques, etching, and mosaic to forge a new visual language to write on this versatile, organic sphere. I also create mosaics from broken eggshells; destroying the intensely controlled process of carefully scripted design on the shell and turning studio detritus into stories. Through using broken shells and adhering them to a flat surface plane, I have reconfigured my preconceived worldview by playing in an unknown field of shattered illusions. Because eggs possess and symbolize new life, traditional cultures used eggs as talismans, ie = power objects for magic and ritual. Each egg is a spherical space, a continuously turning pictorial plane around which images distort, challenging common perceptions. As a three-dimensional phenomenon, eggs offer unique <b>...</b>
Article from Canadian Living Magazine, April 2010 By: Vickie Reichardt "Every year Helen Paddle opens up her home to friends and family who gather to make Pysanky Eggs. "There's a lot to be said for tradition. It's a wonderful way of staying connected with the past and, if you let it, an opportunity to enrich the present. I discovered this last Easter, when I gathered with friends for a Pysanky party. Pysanky are a Ukrainian custom: you draw a design on an egg using melted wax and a stylus called a kistka. Then you dip the egg in assorted dyes, working from lightest shade to darkest, and adding more wax between each dip. It's a process that requires patience and a steady hand - especially when a bunch of hugely creative goofballs are involved. My friend Patti invited me to the annual event, hosted by her mother, Helen. Neither our hosts nor us guests are Ukrainian; most of us were Pysanky newbies. All of us are intelligent, capable adults - who regressed into a gaggle of giddy kindergartners as soon as we sat down at the dining table for arts and crafts. Helen gave a how-to lesson, unleashed us on our eggs and then babysat the proceedings to ensure nothing was accidentally set on fire and no egg was lost to the vicelike grip of overenthusiastic hands. After a few friends asked, I put together a little video - I have painted these eggs since I was a toddler, and it's my favourite Easter tradition. I realise that most such videos are citing these eggs as Ukrainian - I can only trace them back to Silesia, and I think the method has changed a bit over the years and distance.
