QBO Robot in front of a mirror ( UPDATED )

Blog Updated with technical info. thecorpora.com This video corresponds to a small experiment in which we put Qbo in front of the mirror to see if he can learn to recognize himself. For that, we used the "Object Recognition" mode and the "Face Recognition" mode. Qbo, using its stereoscopic vision, selects his image in the mirror and, with the help of one of the engineers, learns how to recognize himself. This quite simple experiment touches interesting psychological aspects of self-consciousness, whose complexity can be proved by the fact I already mentioned of the few species that can recognize themselves in front of the mirror. In this first version, a human guide presents Qbo to himself, but we are working so as the robot could present and self-recognize himself autonomously when found in front of the mirror.

Qbo Robot learns detects & recognizes

In this video you can observe two different demos: a first one in which Qbo detects/recognizes/learns persons; and another in which he detects/recognizes/learns objects. The switch from one demo to the other is made through voice commands, as well as the recognition and the learning commands.

Note: ( Qbo is NOT a Jukebox or Music Player robot. This video shows experimental results with artificial vision ). This video shows how you can use XMMS2 linux audio player software, that can be controlled with hand gestures. Qbo only pays attention to the hands that are nearby, using its stereoscopic vision. Qbo can successfully distinguish, in real-time, among several hand gestures to play/pause, stop, volume up/down, next/previous, songs.

Qbo, a world of knowledge. Qbopedia

Qbo has an internal state machine which changes the states according to direct instructions from the outside world. In this case, when you say to the robot "Qbo. I have a question", the state machine activates a node that localizes and parses the complete webpage of the Wikipedia, searching for the information asked by the user, reading it paragraph to paragraph and asking to the user if he wants to hear more information (date of birth, links of interest, etc.). Qbo can learn new words. The new word is stored in the data base located in the cloud so as to be available for other robots.

Qbo's learning and recognition in the cloud. Qbo robot

In the video you can see how we showed a pineapple to a Qbo that was in the Campus Party which he recognized without any problem. Then we made a Skype call to our labs in Madrid to proceed with the demo. We showed a Tux penguin's photo to two Qbos, one located at the Campus Party and another in our labs in Madrid, which they could not recognize. Then, one of our engineers in Madrid showed the TUX penguin to the Qbo in our labs and uploaded the pictures to the cloud system for the training and learning of the new object. Once the object "penguin" was available to all Qbos connected to the cloud, we updated the knowledge of our Qbo at the Campus Party. Finally, we asked to the latter Qbo if he recognizes the image of Tux and, as you can see in the video, Qbo identified it as "penguin" without any problem. We apologize for the low quality sound and video. Nevertheless, you can perfectly appreciate how our cloud system works.

Qbo Robot Sees Its Own Reflection and Recognizes It

The Qbo robbot, by creator Francisco Paz is able to use recognition software in conjunction with pre-programmed responses, to recognize its own image. In the video, Qbo transits to the "Object Recognition" state from its internal state machine, to learn to recognize its mirror image, as if it were a regular object. Technically, how does Qbo do it? The "Object Recognition" state is implemented to execute simultaneously different ROS nodes: one responsible for the head and base movement; another to select an object from the image using the stereoscopic vision; another to recognize objects or learn new ones. The object recognition algorithm uses "SURF" descriptors and the "Bags of Words" approach (through the OpenCV library), and stores images in Qbo's internal storage system. Qbo has several stored answers and behaviors in an internal knowledge base, that we upgrade as the projects evolves, to make questions or orders to Qbo such as "What it this? or "Do this". Qbo interprets the object "Myself" as a an ordinary object, for which it has special answers in its internal knowledge base such as "Woah. I'm learning myself" or "Oh. This is me. Nice". Qbo selects its reflection in the mirror in the image that he sees using the stereoscopic vision, and one of our engineers interacts (speaks) to him so that Qbo can learn to recognize himself as another object. For direct interaction, Qbo uses the open-source software Julius for speech recognition (in the video, you see how Qbo ...

Qbo meets Qbo

Visit our blog thecorpora.com for more details.... Those who have been following this project for a while know that it started 6 years ago. If something surprised and pleased me in equal measure, it was the controversy brought by our latest video in which Qbo recognizes itself in the mirror. It was not due to the publicity generated around the project, but because, somehow, we've updated this debate that was lost long time ago: can a machine become intelligent or self-conscious? We went from being interested in creating artificial brains to just develop mechatronic systems sophisticated but less intelligent or already programmed. After our latest video, you had consistently sent us a very interesting series of questions which can be summarized in two: what would happen if a Qbo has another of the same "species" identical to him in front of him? QBO as a Telepresence System

What if you could go to the office without physically leaving your home? Imagine yourself being able to connect to your Qbo robot from any part of the world, wherever it may be your house, an office, a museum or anywhere else. Using your Android mobile phone, you can hear what the robot hears, see what is sees, as well as control its movement in its environment, communicate and even express emotions using its leds. In order to carry out this operation in real time Qbo slows down its movement speed in more than 4 times to go back to its "natural" values once the map has been built up.

Slam, Pid & Odometry in Qbo robot

In the video you can see Qbo navigating in a completely autonomous way around the office. The blue arrow corresponds to the robot's position using only odometry and the yellow arrow represents the robot's position already corrected by the Kalman filter. The images are those captured by both webcams and each green circle corresponds to a found mark while the green line joins two marks associated which represent a spot in the three-dimensional space. These spots are added to the status matrix of the Kalman filter to create the environment map. thecorpora.com
