Audi's first big motor sport program in 1981 was based on the quattro permanent four-wheel drive. After numerous championship wins and the banning of four-wheel drive in FIA circuit-based racing series for the 1998 season, a model from Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm with four driven wheels now returns to the race tracks -- the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. Four-wheel drive in an LMP1 sports car: Audi, in its 30 year plus motor sport history, once again makes a pioneering step as the brand with the four rings becomes the first automobile manufacturer ever to field a diesel hybrid at Le Mans. "To develop the hybrid technology for Le Mans is at least as ambitious and challenging as our diesel project was in its early stages," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "The first test results are very encouraging and we are intrigued to see just how this technology performs in combination with our ultra lightweight technology on the race track at Le Mans."

Today I recorded the new Audi R18 LMP1 e-Tron Quattro during a test day at Monza Circuit, in Italy. Unfortunately I couldn't appreciate how this car is really fast because of the really bad weather conditions. The car is powered by a V6 turbo diesel engine which can produce more than 500 BHP. But the e-Tron Quattro is also hybrid: in fact, while the V6 engine works on the rear wheels, the kinetic energy recovered in braking phase is stored, as electric energy, in some accumulators. The car can use this energy during the various accelerations, form a speed of 120 km/h (75 mph), discharging it on the front wheels. In this way a new Quattro traction is created. You can distinguish the two e-Tron Quattro from the two Audi R18 Ultra thanks to that red stripe around the headlights of the e-Tron. THANKS FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBE!!!

Audi extends motorsport commitment New Audi R18 for the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours Dual project in the DTM Endurance races with the Audi R8 LMS Audi aims to continue its string of victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a completely new LMP1 sports car development. Since its debut in 1999, the brand with the Four Rings has won the world's most important endurance race as many as nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. In doing so, Audi has equaled this feat in the race's roll of honor with Ferrari. With the new R18, which was presented at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on the evening of Friday, December 10, 2010, Audi is aiming for its tenth Le Mans success in 2011. For the first time since 1999, Audi will contest Le Mans with a closed coupe again. "In the future, aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "A closed car has clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confirmed in the wind tunnel and during initial track tests." Significantly smaller engines than those used before will be prescribed at Le Mans in 2011 as the rule makers aim to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power. By opting for a 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit, Audi retains the diesel concept that saw its first victorious fielding in 2006. Audi is setting its sights on the next Le Mans victory with the new R18 TDI. The hardtop coupé was especially designed for the 24 hours at Le Mans. In 2011 rules call for much smaller engines than before. Audi decided upon a 3.7 liter V6 TDI engine to power the R18, continuing to place its faith in diesel power, with which it was successful for the first time back in 2006.

Audis R18 # Hits a Ferrari and Crashes into the barrier wich almost seems to kill Mike, but luckely he survived. For the second time in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours, one of Audi's new R18 cars has been forced to retire after a massive accident involving a GTE class Ferrari. Approaching 11pm local time, Mike Rockenfeller had just moved into second place overall at the wheel of the #1 car when a GTE Ferrari -- believed to be the #71 driven by Robert Kaufmann -- moved across on the Audi on the high-speed kink leading to Indianapolis. The resulting contact saw Rockenfeller tipped into a spin that saw the Audi impact the barrier at high speed on the left-hand side of the circuit before the car rebounded across the circuit and smashed into the barrier on the right. Such was the extent of the damage that it wasn't immediately apparent which car had been involved before the reaction of the Audi crew told its own story. According to Audi Motorsport boss Wolfgang Ullrich, Rockenfeller was able to climb from the car and get over the barrier on the side of the circuit before medical crews arrived. Rockenfeller has now been taken away by ambulance from the scene of the accident. So far its said that he walked away from the car with no injuries! Mike Rockenfeller has a massive crash on the way to the Indianapolis corner. This time's it the #1 Audi of Mike Rockenfeller who made contact with Robert Kauffman.
