Railfanning The Union Pacific Geneva Subdivision, Wheaton, IL. 8-11-09.

Me, Larry, Colin, Dan, and Andrew all went out to Wheaton. We started on the bridge West of the station and finished at the station. 12:03AM- A UP ACE leads this container intermodal West and the engineer gives a few honks. DPUs have been pretty common on UP intermodal trains lately. UP SD70ACe #8643 UP SD70M #4538 UP SD70M #4113 UP ES44AC #7351 12:13PM- A manifest and container intermodal all with EMD power meet at the sweeping curve with one going West, the other East. Also note that #270 is the lowest numbered unit on the entire UP roster! UP SD70M #4802 UP SD70M #5152 UP SD70M #4724 UP SD70M #5131 UP SD70M #4544 UP SD70M #4415 UP SD70M #5107 UP GP38-2 #279 Metra 31 departs Wheaton Station and quickly gains speed as it heads West. F40PH-2 #173 1:03PM- Metra 48 arrives into Wheaton over 7 minutes late. Despite it's tardiness, the engineer gives us a shave and a haircut. Cab Car #8403 F40PH-2 #132 1:25PM- This UP manifest rounds the curve with a bunch of steel loads up front. UP SD70M #5188 UP SD70M #4341 1:32PM- Metra 33 arrives on time into Wheaton Station. F40PH-2 #148 Metra 50 arrives two minutes early with Cab Car #8428 leading. F40PH-2 #173 2:09PM- A monsterous lash-up shows up with an awesome crew on board. Railfanning Franklin Park/B-12 & Bensenville/B-17, 14.02.11: Metra, CP, Soo, UP, NREX, IC&E

Today started with an overcast sky and not many trains in Franklin Park, IL, but traffic (and the weather) quickly improved, especially as the day went on and I moved over to Tower B-17 in Bensenville. Train descriptions follow: Train 1: A six-car outbound Metra train departs Franklin Park, revealing the end of a train heading for the Belt Railway of Chicago to the east. Train 2: Canadian Pacific Railway SD40-2 #5964 and ex-Soo Line GP38-2 #4423 have pulled out of Bensenville Yard and alongside Platform 3 at the Franklin Park station, awaiting a clear signal to proceed across CN at B-12. Train 3: An inbound Metra train arrives with just four cars. As it departs, listen for the door-closing announcement- sounds like the "announcer" has been on helium! F40PH #109, the "Village of Robbins" is the power. The light CP/Soo power then departs. Train 4: Having come from Canadian coalfields, CP ES44AC #8857 and AC4400CW #9739 (with the eye-pleasing gold beaver crest) power a coal drag eastward. Train 5: Metra F40PH #122, the "Village of Deerfield", powers a 6-car, Elgin-bound commuter to, then away from Franklin Park. Train 6: Metra MP36PH-3S #427 is eastbound with 5 bilevels toward Chicago. Train 7: Canadian Pacific ES44ACs #8821 and 8714 roar westbound with a manifest. Train 6: Now at the control point the Indiana Harbor Belt calls "Edgington", (this is IHB's northernmost point where it feeds into the CP/Metra main) an unbelievably long CP combined intermodal/mixed freight train ...

New Jersey Railfanning - Elizabeth - Newark Airport - Secaucus Junction - Februrary 23, 2011

During my vacation, I took a day and went down to New Jersey to do some photos. This is everything that I saw. A total of 6 hours, combined into one video. Enjoy. First we start off on top of the parking garage in Elizabeth NJ that overlooks the tracks. One engineer from an acela was nice to give me some horn. (Thank you to that engineer) While the rest provided some excellent photo opportunities. After a while it was time to go but before I headed all the way back into New York I made two more stops. First I stopped at Newark Airport. The landing pattern had put several aircraft directly over the platform and in one lucky shot, I managed to snag a plane fliying directly over a silver service train. Finally, to end the day, I stopped at Secaucus for about two hours until I snagged my ride back home from Penn Station. I hope that if you do watch this video, you take the time to watch the entire thing instead of skip around. There are some pretty neat catches here. A more mechanical aspect to things rather than just hornshows. I apreciate your comments. Thanks!

Extraordinary Railfanning in Milton, Ontario

Welcome to Milton, Ontario. Milton is a growing town located just 24 miles west of Toronto. In the town of Milton 2 major rail lines are operated, the CN Halton Subdivision and the CP Galt Subdivision. There are a few popular railfan locations in the area such as Scotch Block. However, there is a location that is quite unknown that may be one of the best railfanning locations in the GTA, aside from Bayview Junction. Join LocalRailfan and OntarioRailfan1996 as they railfan for about 3 hours in Milton, Ontario at "Rotary Park". With trains heading North, South, East and West the action was quite superior. From fast freight trains with EMD power to a test train you will be sure to enjoy this episode of railfanning. (NOTE: The quality in this video was reduced from 1080p HD to 480p SD because of large file sizes.) LRF Video Productions

Railfanning The BNSF/KJRY Diamonds, Bushnell, IL. 4/8/09.

After seeing videos from MarvinMcgill and others from this spot, I thought I'd pay it a visit. I arrived here at about 4:30AM to catch the U-SEMBIR Taconite Train as well as anything I could find. Upon arriving, I noticed several tracks running in many directions. The line running North and South is the BNSF Brookfield Subdivision, A long-ass single track mainline from Galesburg to Kansas City. Through Bushnell, there is a passing siding. About 5 miles West of the diamonds, a junction splits off into two lines. The other one is the Beardstown Subdivision which runs to Paducah, KY. Running East and West through the heart of industrial Bushnell is the KJRY mainline. This is the line that crosses over the BNSF. No trains came on the KJRY when I was there though, which is kinda unfortunate since I was expecting to get some footage of close-quartered industrial action. So here ya go. Enjoy! Train 1- I headed out to Bushnell as soon as this train, the Westbound U-SEMBIR Taconite, cleared Galesburg. I went out to the historic downtown part of town since it had the best lighting. This came through at 4:49AM. BNSF C44-9W #5234 BNSF SD75M #8226 (Ex. ATSF) BNSF C44-9W #5430 Train 2- Amtrak 380, the Eastbound Illinois Zephyr rumbles across the KJRY diamonds. It will be about half an hour late into Galesburg. P42DC #126 Train 3- The leader of this E-CEBNAM off the Beardstown Subdivision looks like it sustained some nose damage on the conductor's side, due to the mismatched paint. Oh ...

Rail Fanning Middle Of Mother Ocean

I was really fed up taking the same boring monotonous clips from platforms and railway tracks. Suddenly this idea stuck my silly mind. And here I am, standing amidst the lap of Mighty Mother Ocean, which can engulf the puny land mass of Earth, inhabited by arrogant human fools, in couple of seconds. ERS WDM3A 17968 carefully carries the Trichy Rameshwaram passenger on the mother of all bridges - Pamban. Speed limit 15 km/hr. The Ganges, Brahmaputra, Krishna, Kaveri and so on may be mighty rivers, but all of them lose their identities after they merge in the final destination - Mother Ocean, who welcomes all her children, so humbly with open arms. Did you ever notice one thing? The mighty Ocean which can swallow the entire land mass of this planet in seconds, always washes our feet lovingly without any arrogance. Pamban Bridge Playlist - www.youtube.com Pamban bridge is listed in the Top 10 Most Dangerous Railroads in the world - www.mostinterestingfacts.com After the 1964 cyclone, the girders of Pamban bridge were replaced and an anemometer was installed. When the wind speed crosses 55 km per hour, signals on the bridge send out an automatic warning to approaching trains. This bridge was rebuilt in 1965 after the original bridge collapsed during the "Tsunami" of December 1964. It is with the reconstruction of the Pamban Bridge that Mr. E Sreedharan of Delhi Metro made his initial mark. A Day Of Railfanning Illinois And Northwest Indiana, 7-11-10.

1:41AM- After visiting friends in Chicago all night, I was only minutes from home on LaGrange Road when I looked West on the Metra Rock Island and saw a GEVO headlight. The IAIS CBBI (which now runs normally at this time) was approaching. I went to Mokena Hickory Creek Station where I saw it roll by with a DPU. IAIS ES44AC #504 IAIS ES44AC #500 2:55PM- Much later in the day after getting some sleep, I found myself going to Gary, Indiana's Van Loon Junction where the NS/NKP Chicago District and IHB Branch cross CN/EJ&E's Matteson Subdivision at Grade. Today, a nice lash-up was coming on CN's Stateline Coal Loads so this spot would be in the middle of a lot of action. Before it came, an NS Chicago District manifest slowly starts up after waiting a bit and crosses the former EJ&E tracks. NS C40-9W #9377 NS C40-9W #9762 3:24PM- Things began to get interesting when the Stateline Train C740 showed up with the great set of power I was expecting. The ex. First Day of Railfanning in 2011: Joliet, Lockport and Downers Grove- CN, BNSF, Metra & Amtrak

My first full day of railfanning for the year 2011 went something like this: Get up early, hop on the second outbound Metra Rock Island train to Joliet of the morning, get to the station and stupidly remember which direction the platform faces the morning sun... groan and shoot video directly into the blazing sun anyway, spend a few hours at the station, move over to EJ&E Crossing/East Joliet Yard, bus on up to south Lockport (Pace #509) just in time to catch the northbound Texas Eagle, bus (Pace #834) from there to Downers Grove on the BNSF, catch some Metra and more Amtrak there, then home on the BNSF commuter. Train 1: Metra cab car #8561 leads, and F40PH #181 powers, the first non-rush, inbound Rock Island District train of the morning, #506, which will make flag stops at Robbins, Prairie St and 123rd St before heading to La Salle Street Station via the Beverly Branch. Train 2: Canadian National/Illinois Central GP38-2s #9610 and 9618 lead a 9-car local across the Rock and up the Joliet Sub toward the petroleum plants at Lemont. Train 3: Metra Rock Island train #503 pounds the CN, UP & BNSF diamonds as it slows for its final stop at Joliet Union Station. Train 4: Amtrak P42DC #26 leads 7 cars on the northbound Lincoln Service, train #300 from St Louis, with P42DC #127 trailing, as it arrives, loads and unloads passengers, then departs for Chicago. Evening Railfanning Secaucus Junction 5/29/2011 (Serious run-in with NJ Transit Police)

After spending the day in New York while returning home I decide to do some evening railfanning at Secaucus. While filming I met AmtrakFanNEC927 there also with one of his friends. Everything was going good until NJ Transit Police saw us taking pictures and filming the trains. Here are the trains as followed. First: Amtrak Regional train to New York Penn Station pulled by doubleheaded AEM-7's #941 and #937 are leading. Second: Amtrak Regional train to Washington DC with an AEM-7AC leading. Third: NJ Transit train to Long Branch arrives on track B with a Comet V leading and ALP-46 #4611 is trailing. Fourth: NJ Transit Comet V #6065 arrives on track B while an Amtrak Regional train flys through on track 2 going to New York with AEM-7AC #929 leading. ALP-46A #4643 is pushing in back. Here is where the NJ Transit Police start to approach us. He sees me and AmtrakFanNEC927 filming and taking pictures. He ignores me but he starts yelling in a very rude tone if they had a permit to film and why did he have the tripod. AmtrakFanNEC927 replies that they don't have a permit. The officer then calls for additional officers to respond and to stop us from filming. A NJ Transit Arrow III train then pulls in. Railfanning San Clemente, Ca - Amtrak & Metrolink Trains, 7/13/11

There are a lot of scenic areas along the Surfline. This stretch of rail passes by many beaches, bluffs, and cool scenic areas along Southern California's coastline. San Clemente is one of these cool scenic spots to watch some trains go by!! I caught 8 trains passing through, most of them being Amtrak Surfliners. Here's the train info: Watch in HD!! Train #1...F59PHI #464 with its newer hybrid K5LA horn, passes by leading Amtrak #572. Train #2...Amtrak #775 passes through the San Clemente Pier station with Cabcar #6907 leading. Only a select few Amtrak trains stop here. Train #3...Amtrak #774 passes through one of the many pedestrian crossings along San Clemente. Train #4...Amtrak #579 cruises by with an awful K5LA on Cabcar #6952. Train #5...Metrolink #641 passes by with an all Hyundai Rotem car set. Train #6...Amtrak #578 slowly cruises by San Clemente with F59PHI #451 leading. Train #7...Cabcar #626 leads Metrolink Train #609 alongside the pedestrian dirt path. Train #8...Amtrak #583 makes its way through San Clemente. Cabcar #6953 leads the train past Calafia State Beach. Thanks for Watching!! AmtrakCal462

Railfanning Hawthorne Crossing/Cicero, IL: 14 Trains in 90 Minutes *See Description!*

Hawthorne Crossing is a very complex junction at the east end of BNSF's Clyde/Cicero Yard, where the road's ex-CB&Q/BN three-track mainline "racetrack" crosses under, and connects to, the Belt Railway of Chicago. Crossing over the whole mess on a rickety-looking bridge is the occasionally-run Manufacturers Junction Railway, which formerly served Western Electric Co.'s telephone-making Hawthorne Works, and now runs on an irregular schedule to area industries with its three SW1s. Crammed here between the yard throat and connector tracks is Metra/BNSF's Cicero station, where most commuter runs make a stop. Hawthorne Crossing is also where the BRC moves from grade-level running to elevated (on an embankment) trackage, thus the parallel BRC and MJ bridges crossing BNSF. Two incredibly sharp connector tracks (east-south and north-west) allow trains from the "racetrack" to access the Belt. One of these connectors is so sharp, it has a guard rail on the inside rail! I caught a total of twelve trains here in about 90 minutes- a fairly average mid-day here. Train 1 is a dual-GEVO-led ethanol train headed east. Train 2 is an inbound Metra, with at least 9 cars, shuttling unoccupied ones back to Union Station for the afternoon rush. Train 3 and 4 are both Canadian Pacific trains on the BRC- the first was stopped, waiting for a re-crew the entire time I was there, the second is passing north on the Belt with a CP Dash-9, SD40-2, and a GEVO for power. Train 5 is a light engine move ...

Railfanning In Newton and Hutchinson, KS, 12-12-09

As promised for my return, I decided to go out to Newton and to a few other cities to see what was going on. I saw a few trains at Newton. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to film all of them, as i got there just a little too late to get the camera ready. Then I went back to Hutch and caught a couple more. Enjoy! (c) 2009 Chuck Mitchell

RailWorks 2 - Railfanning Willamette Pass

I appologize for the occasional crappiness of the frame rate. As usual, RailWorks and FRAPS are very picky about when they want to work in harmony. Even though it's far from finished, this is hands down the best US route available for RaiWorks. So enjoy the trains and scenery as we do a little virtual raifanning on the joint UP/BNSF line on Willamette Pass. If you want to download this route, go to www.railworksamerica.com and look in the forums under WIP.
