Theme from Laura (1944) - David Raksin

There are elements of Maurice Ravel's 'Daphne et Chloe' in this, yes, for those who were wondering, and I did mix the two together. In this Otto Preminger directed film noir we meet some of the defining characters of the genre, and we view one of the best movies of the 40s. Despite the great script, to-a-tee acting, smoky atmosphere and moody cinematography, what really comes in to focus with this movie is its music. After all, if you look at most of the great movies, you will find a great score backing up the brilliance. This score is done by David Raksin. Year: 1944 Movie: Laura Director: Otto Preminger Players: Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price and Judith Anderson. Genre: 1940s Film Noir My Rating: 9.5/10 My Music Rating: 9/10

Laura David Raksin

Conceived amidst conflict, the title theme for the 1944 Twentieth Century Fox film Laura was composed almost as an afterthought. According to author William Zinsser in his book, Easy to Remember: The Great American Songwriters and Their Songs, director Otto Preminger had chosen Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" as a theme for Laura, but composer David Raksin felt it did not suit the character. Raksin was given the weekend to come up something new. By Sunday, with nothing satisfactory on paper, he read a "Dear John" letter from his wife, and the haunting melody seemed to write itself...... www.jazzstandards.com Gianni Basso : it.wikipedia.org

David Raksin : Laura (piano transcription)

This accomplished piano transcription is of the wonderful standard 'Laura', It was written as a film theme by David Raksin (1912-2004) for a 1944 eponymous movie, and then emerged as a song in 1945 with words by Johnny Mercer. I am not sure who made this transcription, which is quite free, and includes an extended introduction and short waltz section. It appears in a compilation issued by Robbins Music Corporation in 1972 under the editorship of John Lane (aka Joe Levin, I believe) but I am not sure if he made the arrangement, as it is very different in style and technical demands from most of the other pieces in the book. I think it may be based on the movie music rather than the song, and is very much in a 1940s/50s style. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear www.psear.co.uk

'Laura' ~ Theme Music and Gene Tierney Images

This video is for fan purposes only. No copyright infringement intended. Images of Gene Tierney, and leading men. Orchestra conducted by David Raksin. Hauntingly, beautiful music composed for the film noir classic "Laura". This is a compilation of stills and publicity shots of Gene Tierney taken mostly during the rise and height ofher career. Gene Tierney, and a Theory of All Things For love of an image, The essence of God, Through faith vindicated, Grains cramped in a pod. A world reassembled, Of infinite small, Grows full into looming, And then out to sprawl. Tinged nebulous clouds, Condense to form, A work of creation, Concealing a storm. Ensnared light and powder, So squeezed in a ball, Blasts ripples of glitter, In making the All. By sanction from vapor, Emerges a shape, A sphere of enchantment Too dense to escape. Then bliss of perfection Is not out of sight, But to it, I cannot, Advance without plight. It lies on a path, So tracked of my heart. First flaring, then fading, A cross on no chart. No delusion of sunlight, O'er spackling the eyes, Shall darken my vision, With phantasmal lies. Light senses no touch, Nor feelings a glaze, A portrait no passion, Lest love sets a blaze. As ever extending, The journey's end seems, She never abandons, The realm of my dreams. I click on a string, Her shrine is my start, Sufficed to admire, The thrall of her art.
