The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)'s military has been shelling positions it believes are held by rebels who have been fighting the army for weeks in the country's east. The rebels are fighters who were integrated into the national army under a 2009 peace deal, but who later defected, complaining of poor conditions. The fighting since late April has driven tens of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries, including Uganda. Security sources say the government troops are advancing, isolating the mutineers - now understood to number around 300 fighters hiding in forested hill country - yet residents are suffering, and fear there is worse to come. In an exclusive report, Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb visits Bunagana, a strategically important town in the east of the DRC, key to controlling border crossings into Uganda.

Mali's coup leaders have agreed to step down and hand power to civilian rule, in return for an end to sanctions imposed by the country's worried neighbors. As part of the agreement, the 15-state West African bloc, Ecowas, will lift trade and fuel bans with Mali, and grant amnesty to the ruling junta. Fresh shelling is being reported across Syria, with dozens of alleged fatalities in the past 24 hours alone. Damascus blames the bloodshed on terrorists, funded and armed by Turkey and some of the Gulf states. The UN Security Council wants both sides of the conflict to put a complete ceasefire in place within five days, or face unspecified "further measures". Syrian opposition forces say they've withdrawn from a key neighborhood in the embattled city of Homs. Government forces have been trying to take over the area, saying it's used as a base by armed militants. Footage filmed on the road to Sirte on Monday allegedly shows rebel fighters capturing two suspected Moammar Gadhafi loyalists, who are travelling towards the checkpoint, before turning their truck around and attempting to flee under heavy fire from the rebels. One appears to be injured and immediately after escaping from the truck falls to the ground. Another alleged loyalist is seen running at the scene, repeatedly shot at by rebel fighters. Saudi Arabia and its allies are thought to have agreed to pay salaries to rebels fighting the Syrian regime. The decision came as around 60 nations - all harsh critics of the Syrian government - met in Turkey to discuss how to bolster the opposition and intensify sanctions against President Assad. The Lebanese navy has reportedly intercepted a ship loaded with three containers of weapons destined for Syrian opposition forces. The cargo vessel, which originated from Libya, contained heavy machine guns, artillery shells, rockets, rocket launchers and other explosives, a security official said. Rob Matheson reports.

The Free Syrian Army spokesman Ammar al-Wawi has said that The Syrian regime is beginning to lose control over its security forces and is thus forced to hire mercenaries from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon, The spokesman said that in recent months many army and police officers defected, a fact that "requires the regime to make internal changes in the military ranks." Al-Wawi added that the mercenaries include members of Iraqi Shiite militias, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah, and are being deployed in military operations against rebel forces. Meanwhile, The Syrian army has suffered a major blow this weekend with 47 soldiers killed in clashes with deserters since Thursday. Twenty-six soldiers were killed on Thursday, 13 on Friday and eight in the latest attack on Saturday. A Syrian rights group said that at least 40 were injured when defectors mounted an attack in the Idlib region. According to the report, none of the deserters were hurt themselves. As many as 70 people were killed on Saturday alone. The Free Syrian Army, comprised of army defectors, claims to include 20000 fighters led by General Riyadh al-Asaad.
