Sinking Spain: Lost in the recession pit

Spain has plunged into a second recession amid government measures to rein in the country's debt. Ratings agency Standard and Poors has downgraded nine of Spain's banks, many of which are bogged down in bad loans. It also comes as Spain's unemployment rate has soared to almost 25 per cent, the highest in Europe. And sweeping cuts to health care and education have seen thousands taking to the streets, angered at the government austerity measures. RT gets some analysis on the situation in the country from Professor of economics Philipp Bagus, author of the book "The tragedy of the euro". Crude Plan: Iran war & double recession?

Global oil prices are spiking as the EU says it's agreed in principle to ban imports of Iranian crude. The sanctions could come in to effect by the end of January, unless Iran backs down on its alleged nuclear weapons programme. Tehran has responded to the sanctions with threats to block oil trade through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, leading to a continued deadlock in the Persian Gulf. American warships are also present in the region, with a mission to prevent any hindrances of passage. RT talks to political analyst Christoph Hoerstel, who's in Berlin. Britain back in recession, calls grow for new EU austerity deal

Britain is back in recession after the economy shrank again in the first quarter but the government insisted on sticking by its deep spending cuts despite concerns they undermine growth. According to some analysts, the inability of European countries to shake off the economic crisis suggests the time might be right for a renegotiation of the EU's fiscal treaty.Duration: 02:19

Britain back in recession

www.euronews.com Britain's economy has contracted again taking the UK into its second recession since the financial crisis. Gross domestic product fell 0.2 percent in the first quarter of this year, following on from a 0.3 percent decline at the end of 2011. Two consecutive quarters of no growth is the official definition of a recession. Most economists had expected Britain's economy to eke out modest growth in early 2012. As well as a slump in financial services and oil and gas extraction the UK suffered its biggest fall in construction output in three years. The figures put further pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron's government. Cameron said they were "very, very disappointing". He told parliament: "I don't seek to excuse them. I don't see to try to explain them away. There is no complacency at all in this government in dealing with what is a very tough situation that frankly has just got tougher." The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government desperately needs growth to achieve its target of eliminating Britain's large budget deficit over the next five years. However that will be a challenge as many of Britain's European trading partners are already in recession. This turn of events is a problem for the Bank of England. It had appeared poised to end its second round of quantitative easing asset buying, having said that it was more persuaded by survey evidence that the underlying economy was strengthening. Recession snatches retirement from America's workers

Even with overall unemployment numbers reaching their lowest point in the past 32 months, Americans over 50 are still struggling with devastated savings and tough job prospects. Citizens reaching retirement age, many of whom have put in more than 50 years of work, are finding they cannot sit back and enjoy their golden years. Around 57 per cent of Americans older than 50 are less confident than before the recession that they will have enough money to retire, and nearly a quarter of that population has lost all of their savings in the crisis. Meanwhile, the number of over-50 Americans still working has doubled in past 20 years. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from New York City.

World, Meet Recession: Grim US forecast plants panic

Asian markets have opened with a slump on Friday, following an arduous session on Wall Street. It's the second straight day of bad trading, after Thursday's global markets had their worst drop in a month. That prompted the financial leaders of the G20 group of major economies to issue a statement saying they will take strong action to counter the debt crisis. Combined with a series of grave warnings from the US Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund, this sparked concern of a double dip recession being just around the corner. And its arrival is inevitable, says Patrick Young, who's the executive director of the investment advisory firm DV advisors. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Obama: "Sometimes I Forget" About The Recession

During a campaign event Obama admits that he sometimes forgets the impact of the recession (May 10, 2012).
It's official: Eurozone faces double-dip recession

European Commissioner Olli Rehn, responsible for financial and economic affairs, on Thursday confirmed that the European economy has entered into a double-dip scenario as a result of the souvereign debt crisis. Rehn warned that the eurozone could slip into "a deep and prolonged recession" next year as the debt crisis shows alarming signs of spinning out of control. As the political and economic crisis in Italy spurred fears of a split in the euro zone, the European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn said: "Growth has stalled in Europe, and there is a risk of a new recession". He was speaking as the EU's autumn economic forecast for next year said confidence had "sharply deteriorated" and was now adversely affecting investment and consumption.
