Reefs of Malaysia - Marine Heritage

Malaysia is fast becoming one of the leading dive destinations of the world with the richest marine environment in the Indo-Pacific Basin. The incredible bio-diversity of marine life coupled with beautiful islands with white sandy beaches and clear warm waters keep the divers coming back for more. From schooling hammerhead sharks, huge schools of barracudas and various turtles to the bizarre frogfish or ghost pipefish, there is always something to fascinate the diver. In Malaysia, the coral reef ecosystem is reported to support aquatic organism numbering more than 50 genera of coral and more than 200 species of fish. Each time a marine bio-diversity survey is conducted in the Malaysian tropical sea, the species list increases. Dive centres in Malaysia are well equipped and are certified by relevant agencies for maintaining their standards of safety and professionalism. Scuba diving courses endorsed by certifying agencies like PADI, NAUI, SSI, and BSAC. Some of the courses available include the initial 'Openwater Course', 'Diving Instructor Course' or even a 'Re-breather Course'. Upon completion of your scuba course you can be outfitted with the latest scuba equipment of most international brands available from dive centres in Malaysia.

Coral Reef Ecosystem

www.myspace.com All living things require energy to carry out life functions such as growth, movement, and reproduction. For nearly all ecosystems—diverse collections of species that interact with each other and their physical environment—the major source of energy is the sun. The flow of energy tends to follow the same basic pattern whether the ecosystem is a tropical rainforest or a coral reef. To portray the transfer of energy through an ecosystem, ecologists use simple models called food chains. Organisms can be organized into different trophic levels, or positions in a food chain; organisms at higher trophic levels feed on those at lower levels.

CORAL REEF (La barriera corallina in lingua italiana nel mio sito www.ideavideo.it)

Coral reefs are major structures, which are not attributable to human beings on our planet. The largest is the Great Coral Reef, in Australia, over 2200 kilometres long. They extend approximately for 600000 square kilometres, across all tropical seas where temperatures are not lower than 17 degrees. The cliffs, better defined by the English term reef, are built by microscopic animals, polyps, ....

Vintage PBh - Coral Reefs

One of the most amazing habitats on earth is found in warm, clear, shallow waters of tropical oceans worldwide. Tiny cup-shaped animals, called polyps, live in colonies, and when they die, their skeletons form a hard, stony, branching structure made of limestone. In our first episode we examine coral -- the growing, living, incredible, under-the-sea structures that provide shelter and food for many marine animals.

Reefs at Risk Revisited

www.wri.org Under the Reefs at Risk Revisited project, WRI and its partners have developed a new, detailed assessment of the status of and threats to the world's coral reefs. This information is intended to raise awareness about the location and severity of threats to coral reefs. These results can also catalyze opportunities for changes in policy and practice that could safeguard coral reefs and the benefits they provide to people for future generations. Reefs at Risk Revisited is a high-resolution update of the original global analysis, Reefs at Risk: A Map-Based Indicator of Threats to the World's Coral Reefs. Reefs at Risk Revisited uses a global map of coral reefs at 500-m resolution, which is 64 times more detailed than the 4-km resolution map used in the 1998 analysis, and benefits from improvements in many global data sets used to evaluate threats to reefs (most threat data are at 1 km resolution, which is 16 times more detailed than those used in the 1998 analysis). Like the original Reefs at Risk, this study evaluates threats to coral reefs from a wide range of human activities. For the first time, it also includes an assessment of climate-related threats to reefs. In addition, Reefs at Risk Revisited includes a global assessment of the vulnerability of nations and territories to coral reef degradation, based on their dependence on coral reefs and their capacity to adapt. WRI led the Reefs at Risk Revisited analysis in collaboration with a broad partnership of ...

Exploring the Reef with Jean-Michel Cousteau

This short film was included on the second disc of the 2-disc Collector's Edition of the "Finding Nemo" DVD. Directed by Roger Gould, it was fully produced (or at least published) by Pixar Animation Studios. It includes the voicework of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, and Alexander Gould. Summary: Jean-Michel Cousteau presents us with one of his documentary films, and this one is about the coral reefs and how they live. What they eat, how human life affects them, and how they reproduce is covered. I believe sharing this short film on YouTube qualifies as Fair Use under current United States copyright laws. "Fair Use" allows for the posting of copyrighted material online so long as its purpose is for critical commentary or similar use regarding the understanding of a work. Wikipedia has more information about what Fair Use is (what with their countless non-free images having fair use rationales on them). Anyway, enjoy! And please comment on this work of Pixar's. The whole point of me posting it here is so that you can comment on it. I am really happy that I was able to rip this video off of my DVD, with the help of a certain tutorial video here on YouTube - and two bits of cool software it showed me.

Awesome reef Jigging!! Great Barrier Reef!!

www.reefari.com Another top day out on the water, and some excellant jigging the deep reefs of Mackay out in the Shipping Channel. This is only part of a great day's fishing, but well worth checking out the great success on jigs. We had a good trolling session and landed several Spanish Mackerel on lures, but the boat traffic sent them deep, so knowing the fish were there, we got the knife jigs out, and proceeded to lose them, with no wire. We were seeing heaps of fish on the sounder down deep and decided to drop some jigs down. Well worth giving the jigs a go, you can see the fish are there but not biting on baits, it's well worth giving Jigging a go. Bit of action on the jigs seems to get the fish biting, and quality ones at that. We did lose alot of jigs at the first spot to Spanish mackerel, so make sure you have a bit of wire, or wire assist hooks on your jigs. The berkley gulps are awesome plastics and love the 7 " Jerk shads. We got some lovely Golden Trevally and a real nice estuary cod on the Them. I got busted up by a horse fish which smashed me about half way up, must have been a big golden trevally, just couldn't stop him. I'm becoming a big fan of jigging, so subscribe and I'm sure you'll see alot more video's on this, Cheers Greg Check out more about our great fishing charters and fishing mackay at http

HYPERBOLIC CROCHET CORAL REEF: A WOOLLY WONDER @ THE SCIENCE GALLERY

Highlights of the opening of HYPERBOLIC CROCHET CORAL REEF: A WOOLLY WONDER in March 2010 at the SCIENCE GALLERY, Trinity College, Dublin. Created and Curated by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in Los Angeles One of the acknowledged wonders of the natural world, the Great Barrier Reef stretches along the coast of Queensland, Australia, in riotous profusion of colour and form unparalleled on our planet. But global warming and pollutants so threaten this fragile marvel it now faces devastation, along with reefs around the world. In homage to these disappearing treasures, Australian sisters Christine and Margaret Wertheim instigated a project to crochet a handmade reef, a woolly testimony that celebrates also a strange geometry realised throughout the oceanic realm.

Diving the Ribbon Reefs on Australia's Great Barrier Reef (June 2011)

The Ribbon Reefs are a string of ten large reefs that together form the outer edge of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. One feature of the Ribbons is that they serve to shelter the inner reef from big storm damage. The Ribbon Reefs are home to some of the GBR's most popular dive sites. "Steve's Bommie", "Lighthouse Bommie" and "Cod Hole" are among the best known. But there are also other more recently discovered sites that were real standouts on our recent expedition (June 2011). "Acropolis" is one of the sites that is new to me. It boasts the most perfect fields of Acropora coral I have ever seen. Table corals that are 12' / 3.6m in diameter are common here. Uninterrupted fields of staghorn corals extend beyond the 100' / 30m visibility in all directions. Coral cover is close to 100% on this reef. Such coral density is getting rare enough these days... but considering this whole region recently slept through Cyclone Yasi, then the still-pristine state of "Acropolis" is testament to the resilience of coral reefs, the protection the "barrier" offers the inner reef, and the general patchiness of storm damage. Liz and I dived and worked on the Ribbon Reefs a decade ago—in fact, it's where we first met. During our expedition last month, we were thrilled to see the sites were in even better condition now than when we last saw them. Familiar coral heads and bommies seem to have more fish than ever. The corals are in better condition, and of course bigger than they were 10 years ...

Coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef

Coral bleaching occurs when corals get too hot. Bleached corals are essentially sick corals and although they can recover, if temperatures are too warm for too long, the corals will die. Coral bleaching and in some cases death, is an impact of climate change.

Coral Bleaching

This video is part of a story at climateXchange.aspacnet.org Corals get up to 90% of their energy supply from the zooxanthellae that live within them. Stressful conditions (including high water temperature) cause the corals to expel their zooxanthellae. Bleached corals begin to starve once they bleach. The Great Barrier Reef has been affected by mass bleaching events. Widespread bleaching occurred in 1998 and again in 2002. In both of these years, bleaching was recorded on 50-60 per cent of reefs. More recently in the summer of 2006, reefs in the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef were affected by bleaching. Unusually high sea temperatures around inshore reefs caused 40% of corals to die at these reefs. We can all make a difference to the health of the reef by minimising our contributions to climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
