Ann Widdecombe MP personal vie of the reformation, a moment in time she describes as one of the saddest periods in Christian History. Nearly five centuries ago, the Reformation split the medieval Church into competing Catholic and Protestant factions. Ancient customs were abolished, the Pope was declared the Antichrist and Christian killed Christian in the name of their faith as religious wars and massacres raged. Ann was brought up as a Protestant in the Church of England but later in life converted to Catholicism. In her search for the causes of the Reformation, Ann sets out to learn more about the turbulent years that saw merciless intolerance drive a bitter divide between Catholics and Protestants. Beyond the battles of kings, popes and theologians Ann explores how the Reformation came to affect the common people and why it led to many religious breakthroughs: from attacks on church corruption to the translation of the Bible into English.

The history of the Reformation involves such heroes as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Hus, Ulrich Zwingli, William Tyndale, John Wycliffe, Michael Sattler... These pioneers led us to an age where the sufficiency of scripture was procliamed and Reformation Theology flourished. This was counter to the thinking of Rome, with the exception of St. Augustine, who's teachings were condemned by the pope and rejected by Rome. This faithful exposition of scripture was supported by Jonathan Edwards, John Bunyan, George Whitefield, August Toplady, John Owen, William Wilberforce, John A. Broadus, JP Boyce, BH Carroll, Roger Williams, William Carey, JC Ryle, John Foxe, AW Pink, John Newton, Matthew Henry, and Charles Spurgeon. It was Arius, Pelagius, and the followers of Arminius whose teachings were deemed as heresy by the Church, and only later was it so widely accepted, by those outside of Rome, that man had a synergistic ability to work in his own salvation. This made man a co-worker with God, as opposed to a work fully done by God, followed by a command that can now be understood and obeyed, since that man is now regenerated by the power of the Holy Spirit, and by the power of the Word. Reformation Overview Zwingli and Calvin 4a
Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin were both pivotal in their contribution to the Reformation in Europe. It seems that I am a lot closer to Zwingli than Calvin especially in the area of understanding the Communion. I do not agree with the Calvinistic view of Predestination as it originated not with Paul but with Augustine who in turn borrowed it from pagan concepts of 'Fate'. Romans chapter 9 is a mis-use of the Scriptures by Calvinists as it refers to Israel alone and not the Church as chapters 10 and 11 clearly show. This peculiar doctrine held by Calvinists was not held by any Christian in the first three centuries as testified by the Ante-Nicene Fathers. In fact they argued against it as being a part of Gnosticism. Also Calvin's role in the execution of Servetus were prompted by feelings of hatred and wounded pride. We are called to separate from heretics not kill them. (Titus 3:10 KJV) I find the excuses for this crime given in this programme very weak indeed. What I will not do is stand in judgment of Calvin as to whether he was saved or not. However I do have very strong doubts as to that because the Scripture clearly says that no murderer has eternal life in him and Calvin was clearly responsible for this mans death. (1 John 3:15)
