Refraction Of Light
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com In optics, refraction occurs when light waves travel from a medium with a given refractive index to a medium with another at an angle. At the boundary between the media, the wave's phase velocity is altered, usually causing a change in direction. Its wavelength increases or decreases but its frequency remains constant. For example, a light ray will refract as it enters and leaves glass, assuming there is a change in refractive index. A ray traveling along the normal (perpendicular to the boundary) will change speed, but not direction. Refraction still occurs in this case. Understanding of this concept led to the invention of lenses and the refracting telescope. Refraction can be seen when looking into a bowl of water. Air has a refractive index of about 1.0003, and water has a refractive index of about 1.33. If a person looks at a straight object, such as a pencil or straw, which is placed at a slant, partially in the water, the object appears to bend at the water's surface. This is due to the bending of light rays as they move from the water to the air. Once the rays reach the eye, the eye traces them back as straight lines (lines of sight). The lines of sight intersect at a higher position than where the actual rays originated. This causes the pencil to appear higher and the water to appear shallower than it really is. The depth that the water appears to be when viewed from above is known as the apparent depth. This is an important <b>...</b>

Reflection and refraction of colored light in water air surface 2, varying incidence angle
Light propagating in water reaches a plane surface separating water from air. A fraction of light reflects back and the remaining fraction refracts to air. As the incident angle goes up more and more light reflects until the critical angle is reached. For angles of incident greater than the critical angle all the light reaching the surface reflects (total internal reflection). Some colored filters are glued at the orifices. The original light from this apparatus is white halogen.

Refraction Through a Prism
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that refract light. The exact angles between the surfaces depend on the application. The traditional geometrical shape is that of a triangular prism with a triangular base and rectangular sides, and in colloquial use "prism" usually refers to this type. Some types of optical prism are not in fact in the shape of geometric prisms. Prisms are typically made out of glass, but can be made from any material that is transparent to the wavelengths for which they are designed. A prism can be used to break light up into its constituent spectral colors (the colors of the rainbow). Prisms can also be used to reflect light, or to split light into components with different polarizations. Light changes speed as it moves from one medium to another (for example, from air into the glass of the prism). This speed change causes the light to be refracted and to enter the new medium at a different angle (Huygens principle). The degree of bending of the light's path depends on the angle that the incident beam of light makes with the surface, and on the ratio between the refractive indices of the two media (Snell's law). The refractive index of many materials (such as glass) varies with the wavelength or color of the light used, a phenomenon known as dispersion. This causes light of different colors to be refracted differently and to leave the prism at different angles, creating an effect <b>...</b>

Notice that in the first refraction (from air to glass) light does not change direction (normal incidence). Light propagating in glass reaches a plane surface separating glass from air. A fraction of light reflects back and the remaining fraction refracts to air. As the incident angle goes up more and more light reflects until the critical angle is reached. For angles of incidence greater than the critical angle all the light reatching the surface reflects (total internal reflection. The angles of incidence, of reflection and of refraction can be obtained by simple inspection from the intersection of the incident, reflected and refracted rays with the graduated circle.
