The Musical Offering (German title Musikalisches Opfer or Das Musikalische Opfer), BWV 1079, is a collection of canons and fugues and other pieces of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, based on a musical theme by Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great) and dedicated to him. The collection has its roots in a meeting between Bach and Frederick II on May 7, 1747. The meeting, taking place in the king's residence in Potsdam, resulted from Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel being employed there as court musician. Frederick wanted to show the elder Bach a novelty: the piano had been invented some years earlier, and the king now owned several of the experimental instruments being developed by Gottfried Silbermann.[1] During his anticipated visit to Frederick's palace in Potsdam, Bach, who was well known for his skill at improvising, received from Frederick a long and complex musical figure to improvise a three-voice fugue. Frederick, then, challenged Bach to make that into a six-voice fugue. The public present thought that just a malicious caprice by the king, intent upon humiliating philosophers and artists. Bach answered he would need to work the score and send it to the king afterwards. He then returned to Leipzig to write out the Thema Regium ("theme of the king"). Two months after the meeting, Bach published a set of pieces based on this theme which we now know as The Musical Offering. Sorabji wrote two pieces based on ghost stories by Montague Rhodes James, the academic and expert on early manuscripts and Christian apocrypha. The first of these compositions — Quaere reliqua hujus materiei inter secretiora — was based on Jamess story Count Magnus and was written in 1940. A year later, Sorabji provided this piece with a companion — St Bertrand de Comminges He was Laughing in the Tower — suggested by Jamess Canon Alberics Scrapbook. The subtitle refers to a line from the story: A few remarks passed between father and daughter, of which Dennistoun only caught these words, said by the sacristan, He was laughing in the church, words which were answered only by a look of terror from the girl. The story is set in the Pyrenean town of St Bertrand de Comminges, and exemplifies the most effective elements of Jamess style with its ironic but generous portrait of the English academic abroad finding himself out of his depth dealing with the supernatural. Sorabjis music, while not strictly programmatic, mirrors Jamess depictions of the supernatural with its strong sense of atmosphere, employment of shock tactics and a the palpable sensation of climax towards the end. The theme the King gave Bach is characterized by leaps of a third followed by a descending seventh and a descending chromatic passage, and this theme may not be the original suggested by the King, but an 'improvement' by Bach after working out the music. Bach successfully improvised the fugue, and Frederick the Great subsequently challenged him to compose a six-voice fugue on the same theme. James Gaines speculates that the public that night thought the challenge was Frederick the Great's malicious way of embarrassing the now 'old fashioned' Bach.
