Many of his 25 million people see him as the nation's saviour, crushing Islamic fundamentalism by closing down Mosques and jailing Muslims for engaging in normal religious practices. But some see a darker side to the campaign: "I think it is important to understand that what Uzbekistan has been engaged in for the past for years has not been a war on terrorism, but rather a very brutal campaign against its own people," comments Acacia Shields, Human Rights campaigner. With no avenue for protests or redress, the crackdowns have fuelled resentment against Karimov's regime. Critics now ask whether the repression has crushed revolutionary Islam, or created it. It took place right in front of the Flora on the street Schulterblatt. 3 police officers were injured, several people were arrested. Stop Repression In the Basque Country
irishbasquecommittees.blogspot.com In the early hours of Tuesday 24 November 2009, 34 Basque pro-Independence political activists were arrested and 92 properties were searched in an operation involving 650 Spanish policemen. The police tried to arrest another seven youths but they werent in their homes. Last week the anti-repression organization Askatasuna warned that they believed a police operation was imminent in the Basque Country. Then, in the early hours of Tuesday 24, 34 well known social, political and cultural young activists were arrested in what was the largest police operation in decades. They are being held incommunicado despite the recent recomendations of the United Nations Committee Against Torture. All of them have been accused of being members of the national and county-level leadership of the pro-independence left-wing youth organization Segi which was banned in 2005. Just ten days ago the Basque pro-Independence Left held a press conference where 110 prominent members launched new proposals to resolve the conflict. Nach 25 Tagen der Besetzung kam die Exekutive im Auftrag der BUWOG um das Grundstück zu räumen. Unmengen an Polizistinnen waren nötig um die rund 20 Besetzerinnen aus dem Haus zu bringen. Ca. 30 Polizeibusse, ein Hubschrauber über dem Block kreisend und ein Panzerwagen mussten eingesetzt werden, gegen die doch angeblich so gefährlichen Besetzerinnen. Ein Kulturzentrum, Freiraum für alle, VoKü und andere soziale Räume, bedarfen wohl einer starken Polizeipräsenz. Wenn die WEGA gerufen wird, dann muss ja eine Gefahr bestehen, oder? Tatsache ist, dass sämtliche Personen die aus dem Gebäude "entfernt" werden mussten, friedlich und in aller Ruhe das Grundstückverlassen haben. Wie auch schon bei früheren Aktionen. Nie gab es Gewalt oder eine Gefahr, welche von den Besetzerinnen ausging. Die einzige gefährliche Sache vor Ort ist und bleibt die Polizei. Zwar verlief die Räumung friedlich, muss wohl an der beängstigenden Anzahl an Einsatzkräften gelegen haben, doch wehe man versucht dann eine spontane Demo zu organisieren. Die kann jederzeit, völlig ohne Grund und schon gar nciht erwartet durch die Polizei aufgelöst werden. Doch Auflösung bedeutet nicht gleich man teilt die Untersagung mit, dies kann auhc durch einen plötzlichen Kessel durch Exekutivbeamte geschehen, welche einem dann, nachdem sie die Freiheit berauben, mitteilen, dass man sich aufzulösen hat. Physicians Urge Obama Admin to Pressure Bahrain to End Repression of Doctors, Patients
The Gulf nation of Bahrain has announced that 47 medical workers who treated pro-democracy protesters during the nation's popular uprising will be tried before a military court on charges of acting against the state. Some could face the death penalty for providing medical assistance to protesters. Human rights groups say the arrests are part of a campaign of intimidation that runs directly counter to the Geneva Convention, which guarantees medical care to people wounded in conflict. We speak with Richard Sollom of Physicians for Human Rights. He recently traveled to Bahrain to document the situation there and is the co-author of a new report, "Do No Harm: A Call for Bahrain to End Systematic Attacks on Doctors and Patients.
