Here is video of the SRV in action showing the hydraulics lowering the frame as we would in strong winds, and the probe deployment as if we were in the path of the tornado. We decided to go with the name SRV because we were not big fans of the name "Dominator", and plan to collect vertical wind data from tornadoes, wall clouds, supercell updrafts, hurricane eyewalls, etc. (hence the inclusion of Storm in the acronym). Check out Storm Chasers beginning fall of 2009 for the SRV in action!

Used Car Scam (The Today Show)

Today Investigates the Nation's biggest used car scam. Buying a used car? Don't just take the seller's word about the car's history. You can use a car's vehicle identification number (VIN) to get information including whether the car is stolen or has been in a major accident or a flood. Since Jan. 30, consumers have been able to research cars through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), a program of the US Department of Justice. The online database includes information for about 73% of the country's auto population, gleaned from state agencies, junk- and salvage-yard organizations, and insurance companies. Currently information from 38 states is available, and all states are required to fully participate by Jan. 1, 2010. Visit nmvtis.gov, click on one of the listed providers and follow the prompts. Expect to pay between $2 and $4 for a report, because the authorizing law required that federal funds not be used for this database. Used-car reports from commercial companies, like Carfax and Experian's AutoCheck, have a higher price tag but draw information from a wider variety of sources. A single report from AutoCheck costs $14.99 (unlimited access for 60 days costs $24.99) and includes information from all states as well as from some sources not found in the NMVTIS database. When buying a used car, you need to verify the VIN so you are not a victim of this scam: Here's How to Find Your Car's VIN Locate your car's unique DNA - its unique vehicle ...

Northrop NASA Lifting Body Tests HL-10, M2-F2, M2-F3

Courtesy: NASA Dryden Flight Research Center From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org After delivery to NASA in January 1966, the HL-10 made its first flight on December 22, 1966, with research pilot Bruce Peterson in the cockpit. Although the XLR-11 rocket engine (same type used in the Bell X-1) was installed, the first 11 drops from the B-52 launch aircraft were unpowered glide flights to assess handling qualities, stability, and control. In the end, the HL-10 was judged to be the best handling of the three original heavy-weight lifting bodies (M2-F2/F3, HL-10, X-24A). The HL-10 was flown 37 times during the lifting body research program and logged the highest altitude and fastest speed in the lifting body program. On February 18, 1970, Air Force test pilot Peter Hoag piloted the HL-10 to Mach 1.86 (1228 mph). Nine days later, NASA pilot Bill Dana flew the vehicle to 90030 feet (27440 m), which became the highest altitude reached in the program. During a typical lifting body flight, the B-52—with the research vehicle attached to the pylon mount on the right wing between the fuselage and inboard engine pod—flew to a height of about 45000 feet (14000 m) and a launch speed of about 450 mph (720 km/h). Moments after being dropped, the XLR-11 was lit by the pilot. Speed and altitude increased until the engine was shut down by choice or fuel exhaustion, depending upon the individual mission profile. The lifting bodies normally ...

India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle [GSLV] - ISRO report

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle [GSLV] is currently being developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation [ISRO]. On successful completion of the programme, India would become self-sufficient in launching heavy, commercial, communication satellites from its own soil as well as being able to do the same for other nations. It is also to launch India's second mission to the Moon, Chandrayaan-2. India also operates the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle [PSLV], developed for launching smaller-sized, lighter satellites and placing them in the desired orbit -- sun synchronous or geostationary. It has an extremely high success rate, having performed 17 consecutive successful launches & has placed a total of 41 satellites in orbit, including one in which it put in orbit 10 satellites in a single launch -- a world record. X-43A Scramjet B-52 Takeoff And Launch (2004)

Courtesy: NASA Langley Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center NASA's X-43A Scramjet Breaks Speed Record11.16.04 RELEASE: 04-59 NASA's X-43A research vehicle screamed into the record books again Tuesday, demonstrating an air-breathing engine can fly at nearly 10 times the speed of sound. Preliminary data from the scramjet-powered research vehicle show its revolutionary engine worked successfully at nearly Mach 9.8, or 7000 mph, as it flew at about 110000 feet. The high-risk, high-payoff flight, originally scheduled for Nov. 15, took place in restricted airspace over the Pacific Ocean northwest of Los Angeles. The flight was the last and fastest of three unpiloted flight tests in NASA's Hyper-X Program. The program's purpose is to explore an alternative to rocket power for space access vehicles. "This flight is a key milestone and a major step toward the future possibilities for producing boosters for sending large and critical payloads into space in a reliable, safe, inexpensive manner," said NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe. "These developments will also help us advance the Vision for Space Exploration, while helping to advance commercial aviation technology," Administrator O'Keefe said. Supersonic combustion ramjets (scramjets) promise more airplane-like operations for increased affordability, flexibility and safety in ultra high-speed flights within the atmosphere and for the first stage to Earth orbit. Boeing X-45A Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle Program (2002)

Courtesy: NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, DARPA, Boeing With all the excitement over the Northrop Grumman X-47B flying this week it's easy to forget that this has all happened before, and this will all happen again. Dryden Flight Research Center signed an agreement with DARPA and Boeing back in 1999 to each develop an Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV). Boeing and Northrop both developed test models on independent but parallel production paths in order to develop a Joint Unmanned Combat Air System (J-UCAS). Boeing developed the X-45A demonstration vehicle and Northrop the X-47A. The first flight of the X-45A was in 2002, almost eight years ago.Testing included taxi, takeoff and landing and various airborne activities. One of the key tests for the X-45 was a system to allow for autonomous formation flight and tests delivering weapons on target. The Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) system demonstration program was a joint DARPA/Air Force/Boeing effort to demonstrate the technical feasibility for a UCAV system to conduct various strike missions within the emerging global command and control architecture. The demonstrations within the program are providing the information necessary to enable decision-makers to determine whether it is technically and fiscally prudent to continue development of UCAV aircraft to perform missions.

NASA X-43A Scramjet Readied For Mach 10 (2004)

Courtesy: NASA Langley Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center NASA's high-risk, high-payoff Hyper-X Program is ready to attempt its greatest challenge yet - flying a "scramjet"-powered X-43A research vehicle at nearly 10 times the speed of sound. Officials have set Nov. 15 or 16 for the flight, which will take place in restricted US Naval airspace over the Pacific Ocean northwest of Los Angeles. This will be the last and, by far, the fastest of three unpiloted flight tests designed to explore an intriguing alternative to rocket power for space access vehicles. Supersonic combustion ramjets - or scramjets - promise more airplane-like operations for increased affordability, flexibility and safety for ultra high-speed flights within the atmosphere and for the first stage to Earth orbit. The scramjet advantage is that, once they are accelerated to about Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound) by a conventional jet airplane engine, it is believed that they can be flown in the atmosphere up to about Mach 15 without having to carry heavy oxygen tanks as rockets must. Also, rockets tend to produce full thrust or nearly full thrust all the time; scramjets can be throttled back and flown more like an airplane. The scramjet concept is simple: Accelerate the vehicle to about Mach 4 by a conventional jet engine, then start the scramjet engine (which has few or no moving parts) by introducing fuel and mixing it with oxygen obtained from the air and compressed for combustion. IBM Battery 500: A look inside a lithium-air battery

In 2009, IBM researchers set out to develop lithium-air battery technology capable of powering a family-sized electric car for approximately 500 miles (800 km) on a single charge. Instead of using heavy metal oxides, lithium-air batteries borrow oxygen from the air as the vehicle is being driven, creating an air-breathing battery. This results in lighter batteries with high energy density that extend the car's range from a single charge. IBM researchers have successfully demonstrated in the lab the fundamental chemistry of the charge-and-recharge process for lithium-air batteries and, if this bold research project is successful, people could see it in cars between 2020 and 2030.

Stanford robot car "Junior" in action, DARPA Urban Challenge

Yesterday, a Volkswagen Passat drove around a parking lot in Mountain View, CA, made three-point turns, and followed the rules at a four-way stop--all without human intervention. The computer-controlled car is named Junior, and it's Stanford University's official entry in the DARPA Urban Challenge, a race in which an autonomous car must navigate city streets, obey traffic laws, avoid obstructions, and, crucially, drive well among other cars in traffic. This test run is Junior's first public appearance, designed to let DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) test the car and determine if it proceeds to the next round in the Urban Challenge.
