A valiant second half fightback by the women's rugby team wasn't enough to bring the BUCS Championship trophy back to Yorkshire, as they fell 12-19 to UWIC in a thrilling encounter at Twickenham. Trailing 19-0 with only twenty minutes of the match remaining, Leeds Met produced a stunning last quarter scoring two superb tries, but didn't do quite enough to level the scores. Both sides went into the final unbeaten throughout the season and hopes were high that Leeds Met would be able to avenge last year's defeat in the final against the same opponents. The opening half an hour saw no score by either side as possession was even and chances at a premium. Explosive running from Leeds Met's outside centre Rose Fong saw her exploit a gap in the UWIC defence, but she was held up just short of the line. UWIC scored the game's first try as their number eight Sioned Harries burst through Leeds Met defence and further damage was done right before half time as Kate Newton added to the score to make it 12-0 to UWIC at the interval. Despite a promising start to the second half, Leeds Met were further behind on the hour mark as Kate Newton bagged her second try of the game and victory looked a tall order for the Yorkshire side. However, the side didn't let their heads drop and were rewarded for the persistance as Emily Scarratt scored a glorious try under the posts having outpaced a number of UWIC defenders.
