Robert Johnson - Come on in my Kitchen

The delta blues legend sings 'Come on in my Kitchen.' "You better come on, in my kitchen, 'cause it's going to be raining outdoors." One of my favourite songs of his. Hopefully the images reflect the general feel of it. Also, please check out my Blues channel on videosift, where you'll find many more great performances by a wide variety of blues artists on video, all in one place. blues.videosift.com ** Credit for many of the images in the video goes to the absolutely amazing vintage photography website, www.shorpy.com **

Roots of Blues -- Robert Johnson „Cross Road Blues"

Recorded: Place ?, November 27, 1936 Robert Johnson (g) (vcl) Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 -- August 16, 1938) is among the most famous of Delta blues musicians. His landmark recordings from 1936--1937 display a remarkable combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that have influenced generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend. Considered by some to be the "Grandfather of Rock 'n' Roll", his vocal phrasing, original songs, and guitar style have influenced a broad range of musicians, including Muddy Waters, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Paul Butterfield, The Band, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Robert Palmer, Jack White and Eric Clapton, who called Johnson "the most important blues musician who ever lived". He was also ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Robert Johnson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi probably on May 8, 1911, to Julia Major Dodds and Noah Johnson. Julia was married to Charles Dodds, a relatively prosperous landowner and furniture maker to whom she had borne 10 children. Dodds had been forced by a lynch mob to leave Hazlehurst following a dispute with white landowners. Julia herself left Hazlehurst with baby Robert, but after some two years ...
Robert Johnson CrossRoads - Cross Road Blues Song and Lyrics

Robert Johnson Crossroad - johnomusic.net - "Cross Road Blues" is a song by the incredibly influential Blues singer, Robert Johnson. The song was originally released 1936 by Vocalion Records and has gone on to influence not only blue music but the world of music as a whole. Amazingly the original version of the song remained out of print until 1990, however has since been rediscovered by several new generations of Robert Johnson Crossroads fans. Because of it's significance, the song "Cross Road Blues", was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. The following are the lyrics to Crossroad Blues by Robert Johnson. I went down to the crossroad fell down on my knees I went down to the crossroad fell down on my knees Asked the lord above "Have mercy now save poor Bob if you please" Yeeooo, standin at the crossroad tried to flag a ride ooo ooo eee I tried to flag a ride Didn't nobody seem to know me babe everybody pass me by Standin at the crossroad babe risin sun goin down Standin at the crossroad babe eee eee eee, risin sun goin down I believe to my soul now, Poor Bob is sinkin down You can run, you can run tell my friend Willie Brown You can run, you can run tell my friend Willie Brown (th)'at I got the croosroad blues this mornin Lord babe, I'm sinkin down And I went to the crossraod momma I looked east and west I went to the crossraod baby I looked east and west Lord, I didn't have no sweet woman ooh-well babe, in my distress Watch Robert Johnson Crossroads Video ...

This isn't the Led Zeppelin version...its the original one that legendary blues man Robert Johnson wrote way back when. And yes I first heard this on the CODA album from Led Zeppelin. You can see clearly how this inspired many great rock artists. So sit back and enjoy the music.
Robert Johnson "They are Red Hot"

Robert Johnson "They are Red Hot" I would like to say that I really respect and love Robert Johnson and the People of Africa. I made this video just because I thought that these people move in the rhytm that fit so well with his music and that maybe by going back to Africa we can understand where from he got his RHYTM. I was my self actually horrified when I saw the whole documentary movie from which this part is taken ...I am very sorry If some people think that the lyrics of this song mingled with this video seem inappropriate.I think your opinions are justified. I actually did not axactly know what Mr Johnson was singing about, I was just entranced with the rhytm of this song. But I still believe that we can go beyond the literal meaning of this song and just imagine that we are these people who just love to sing and dance, who just love to dance to any song that represent reality. But again I am sorry if I hurt anybody.

Elijah Wald plays Robert Johnson's From Four Till Late

In "Escaping the Delta," I explored the roots and influence of Robert Johnson's music, and tried to place him in the broader perspective of his time and place. This song brings together a lot of the threads that inspired me to write that book. Johnson plays it in a style that suggests that he had been listening to Blind Blake, and my version takes it several steps further into that territory. But it is also a link to the kinds of urban musicians who are usually filed as jazz artists: the same melody was recorded in 1922 by Johnny Dunn's Original Jazz Hounds, as "Four O'Clock Blues" (you can hear it at www.redhotjazz.com so clearly the song was around long before Johnson recorded it. Whether the words were Johnson's addition, or learned from some forgotten singer in Memphis, or a mix of both, we probably will never know. (When I say in the video that no one sang them before Johnson did, what I meant is that he was the first to record them.) But the goofy pun in the third verse is a perfect example of the sort of humor in a lot of vaudeville and minstrel show blues numbers, and yet another reminder of the way folk and pop styles overlapped--urban pros like WC Handy learned from rural players, and rural pros like Johnson were paying attention to urban blues, jazz and pop artists.

FOUR UNTIL LATE (1937) by Robert Johnson

I first heard 'Four Until Late' sung by Eric Clapton on the Fresh Cream album. It was one of the first songs I learned on guitar, and some of the misheard lyrics I still sing, such as 'She made so many men wear apron overalls'. Robert Johnson, of course, was the author of the song (although clearly influenced by Blind Blake's 'Georgia Bound'- see my video). In 1937, he travelled to Dallas, Texas, for his second and final recording session in a makeshift studio at the Brunswick Record Building, 508 Park Avenue. He recorded this song on 19 June 1937. It goes without saying that Johnson was one of the most influential blues singers in history. Wikipedia has a substantial profile on him. There are only two photos of Johnson that I know of, and I have used these and others to make a slideshow video. Comments are welcome.

Robert Johnson STOP BREAKIN DOWN - Clip 3

Clip Two of my short film about Robert Johnson told through the eyes of Son House. This clip shows Robert as a young and terrible guitar player. It shows one of the reasons why he later became great...the crossroads myth.

Search For Robert Johnson (Part 1 of 5)

www.youtube.com A very good bio-doc (from 1992) effort to untangle the life and myths of blues legend Robert Johnson. This is a challenging task, as not a lot is known about Johnson except through his music and through lore. There is speculation at times, but this is inevitable. It still uncovers a lot, from his rejection by his family (blues was the work of the devil) to the darkness of his lyrics and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. I would have preferred the original music of Johnson, but narrator John Hammond does a very satisfactory job in his renditions. Relatively minor players "Honeyboy" Edwards and Johnny Shines give classic delta blues performances that stand out. Appearances by Eric Clapton and Keith Richards help to emphasize Johnson's lasting impact on blues and rock. Johnson was never interviewed, and his performance was never captured on film. Beside his music, all that are left are oral accounts, peppered by exaggeration and myth. An accurate, objective bio may be impossible to achieve. But The Search for Robert Johnson comes about as close as might be expected, and has great entertainment value as well.
