ROBERT JOHNSON Terraplane Blues (1936)

"Terraplane Blues" is a blues song recorded in 1936 in San Antonio, Texas by bluesman Robert Johnson. The car model Terraplane becomes a metaphor for sex. "Terraplane Blues" is among only a handful of songs that were released during Johnson's lifetime, and it became a moderate regional hit, selling 5000 copies. The guitar licks and riffs in Terraplane Blues are very similar to those used in Cross Road Blues. And I feel so lonesome, you hear me when I moan When I feel so lonesome, you hear me when I moan Who been drivin' my Terraplane1, for you since I been gone. I'd said I flash your lights, mama, you horn won't even blow (spoken: Somebody's been runnin' my batteries down on this machine) I even flash my lights, mama, this horn won't even blow Got a short in this connection, hoo well, babe, it's way down below I'm gion' heist your hood, mama, I'm bound to check your oil I'm goin' heist your hood, mama, mmm, I'm bound to check your oil I got a woman that I'm lovin', way down in Arkansas Now, you know the coils ain't even buzzin', little generator won't get the spark Motor's in a bad condition, you gotta have these batteries charged But I'm cryin', pleease, pleease don't do me wrong. Robert Johnson - Cross Road Blues [Take 2] (1936)

Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 - August 16, 1938), King of the Delta blues... From the Robert Johnson: The Complete Recordings (1990)...Enjoy!!! LYRICS: I went to the crossroad, fell down on my knees I went to the crossroad, fell down on my knees Asked the Lord above "Have mercy, save poor Bob, if you please." Mmmmm, standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride Standin' at the crossroad, I tried to flag a ride Didn't nobody seem to know me, everybody pass me by Mmm, the sun goin' down, boy, dark gon' catch me here Oooo, ooee eeee, boy, dark gon' catch me here I haven't got no lovin' sweet woman that love and feel my care You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown You can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown Lord that I'm standin' at the crossroad, babe, I believe I'm sinkin' down... Recording of Friday, November 27, 1936, San Antonio, Texas "I have never found anything more deeply soulful than Robert Johnson." (Eric Clapton) "The irony of Robert Johnson's superstar status is hard to miss. He was almost completely ignored by the music-buying public of his day, even in the market his records were aimed at. Yet in the present day, he's practically the only country blues artist most people know about. On one level, this is because of relentless championing by other blues artists, not least Eric Clapton. On another level, Johnson's fame rests on the fact that he was able to write, or more properly pull together from his various mentors and influences ...

Robert Johnson- Me and the Devil Blues

An enchantingly haunting tale told by Robert Johnson

Roots of Blues Robert Johnson „Stop Breaking Down Blues

„Stop Breaking Down Blues„ (Robert Johnson) Recorded: Dallas, June 20, 1937Robert Johnson (g)(vcl). Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 -- August 16, 1938) is among the most famous of Delta blues musicians. His landmark recordings from 1936--1937 display a remarkable combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that have influenced generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend. Considered by some to be the "Grandfather of Rock 'n' Roll", his vocal phrasing, original songs, and guitar style have influenced a broad range of musicians, including Muddy Waters, John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Paul Butterfield, The Band, Neil Young, Warren Zevon, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Robert Palmer, Jack White and Eric Clapton, who called Johnson "the most important blues musician who ever lived". He was also ranked fifth in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Robert Johnson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi probably on May 8, 1911, to Julia Major Dodds and Noah Johnson. Julia was married to Charles Dodds, a relatively prosperous landowner and furniture maker to whom she had borne 10 children. Dodds had been forced by a lynch mob to leave Hazlehurst following a dispute with white landowners. Julia herself left Hazlehurst with ...

Crossroad Blues - Robert Johnson

A cover of Robert Johnson's original version (take2). You will hear the sound of summer river as it's recorded at a riverside. Key = B Played in open A, 012-016-024-032-042-053, and 2nd capo with a toothpick put between fret-board & strings which makes it easy to play a slide on normal acoustic guitar. I believe the key of RJ's original was "A" (2nd capo on Open G or just Open A) and it should have had some speed-up after recording.

Seems to work just fine. :-)Delta Blues Guitar Slide Boogie John Campbell Mississippi Rory Block Son House Bukka White Texas Hound Dog Taylor Robert Johnson Elmore James Johnny Slim Campbell Louisiana Crawfish Boil Bottleneck Slide Guitar John Hurt Lightnin' Hopkins Leadbelly Charley Patton Blind Blake Blind Lemon Jefferson Lonie Johnson Mance Lipscomb Tommy Johnson Reverend Gary Davis Blind Willie Johnson Big Bill Broonzy Sonny Boy Williamson Blind Willie McTell Kokomo Arnold Skip James Mississippi Fred McDowell Tampa Red Roosevelt Sykes Blind Boy Fuller T-Bone Walker Howlin' Wolf Sonny Terry Sister Rosetta Tharpe Robert Lockwood Jr. Muddy Waters Hound Dog Taylor Johnny Shines John Lee Hooker Elmore James Slim Harpo Etta James Taj Mahal Keb Mo Kevin Moore Eric Clapton Bonnie Raitt Eric Bibb

Crossroads by Robert Johnson Delta Blues Bottleneck Slide Guitar

Crossroads by Robert Johnson performed by Keni Lee Burgess busking in Provencetown, Mass. Cape Cod. Spanish tuning (515135) Key of F (CFCfac). According to a legend known to modern Blues fans, Robert Johnson was a young black man living on a plantation in rural Mississippi. Branded with a burning desire to become a great blues musician, he was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroad near Dockery's plantation at midnight. There he was met by a large black man (the Devil) who took the guitar from Johnson and tuned it, giving him mastery of the guitar, and handed it back to him in return for his soul. Within less than a year's time, in exchange for his everlasting soul, Robert Johnson became the king of the Delta blues singers, able to play, sing, and create the greatest blues anyone had ever heard.

FOUR UNTIL LATE (1937) by Robert Johnson

I first heard 'Four Until Late' sung by Eric Clapton on the Fresh Cream album. It was one of the first songs I learned on guitar, and some of the misheard lyrics I still sing, such as 'She made so many men wear apron overalls'. Robert Johnson, of course, was the author of the song (although clearly influenced by Blind Blake's 'Georgia Bound'- see my video). In 1937, he travelled to Dallas, Texas, for his second and final recording session in a makeshift studio at the Brunswick Record Building, 508 Park Avenue. He recorded this song on 19 June 1937. It goes without saying that Johnson was one of the most influential blues singers in history. Wikipedia has a substantial profile on him. There are only two photos of Johnson that I know of, and I have used these and others to make a slideshow video. Comments are welcome.
