RECORDED IN 1934. Theodore Shaw "Teddy" Wilson (November 24, 1912 July 31, 1986) was a jazz pianist from the United States born in Austin, Texas. His sophisticated and elegant style graced the records of many of the biggest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. He is considered one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time.Wilson studied piano and violin at Tuskegee Institute. After working in the Lawrence "Speed" Webb band, with Louis Armstrong and also "understudying" Earl Hines in Hines's Grand Terrace Cafe Orchestra, Wilson joined Benny Carter's Chocolate Dandies in 1933. In 1935 he joined the Benny Goodman Trio (which consisted of Goodman, Wilson and drummer Gene Krupa, later expanded to the Benny Goodman Quartet with the addition of Lionel Hampton). The trio performed during the big band's intermissions. By joining the trio, Wilson became the first black musician to perform in public with a previously all-white jazz group. The noted jazz writer and producer John Hammond was instrumental in getting Wilson a contract with Brunswick, starting in 1935, to record hot swing arrangements of the popular songs of the day, with the growing jukebox trade in mind. Rosetta are a post rock/metal/hardcore outfit hailing from Philadelphia, PA. They shun such genre pigeonholing and label themselves as "Metal for Astronauts" because of the spacey atmospheres of their music, and likely the overall "space" theme/metaphor most of their tracks share. Monument is the final track on their 2nd full length, Wake/Lift, that was released on indie record label Translation Loss. Unfortunately, no one will ever likely hear Monument in a live setting do to the amount of guitar tracks, and hardware necessary to pull off the sound of this colossal song. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss Life and Love are definitely two of the worlds most intriguing and elusive mysteries, and songwriter Sam Phillips beautifully captures this in his song "Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us". The Rosetta Stone was an artifact inscribed in multiple languages that helped researchers to decipher Ancient Egyptian by comparing it to a known Greek inscription on the stone. This amazing song on the 'Raising Sand' CD by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss celebrates the mystery of life and love in a hauntingly beautiful way. I was listening to this CD yesterday afternoon,and I decided to celebrate it with imagery of recent events in my own life that re-shaped both my life and psyche. The selected still I used to represent this video is a Photoshop rendition of a UFO I actually photographed at Wakefield Bridge in Quebec in the summer of 2007. Joanne and I were sitting beneath the bridge when this picture was taken during a rather difficult phase in our relationship, searching for new meaning in our own lives and pondering the meaning of love.
