This is a after effects tutorial on how to use rotoscoping in after effects to add text layers behind existing object within your footage. I do this by cutting my footage into layers and adding text between the rotoscope layer and background layer. New info included below: Here's the history of how I made it. It's a short film I made in collage back in the 80s. Started in 1985 and finished in 1989.. Real short huh. It was shot live action 16mm film and then I edited it and Rotoscoped the whole thing. Roto the serious Old School way. Using a "downshooter" camera system. Not like those new flash rotoscope commercials . However, all this didn't take 4 years, it was the cel painting that took so long.. I had very little help.. anyway.. This was a Student film from my days at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) in Valencia, California, USA. Rotoscoping: In order to keep the look consistent I had to draw fast. I felt that lots of detailed images were not necessary because the motion filled in the information. The details become apparent even in a very loose or messy drawing sequence. As in the Stogie or the walking Cigar. I drew that pretty loosely. So I had it down to 2min per drawing. I had a watch sitting on the table and everything. This was also due to the fact that I didn't want to be drawing for 2 months. I drew on Cartoon colour acetate animation cels with peg registration holes. I used a sharpie or should I say... many many sharpies... Here's an interesting tid-bit I forgot to add. I was taught how to rotoscope by Michael Patterson. He was an instructor at CalArts at the time. He was also a freelance artist who was in the middle of making the music Video by the group A-ha called 'Take On Me'. yeah the <b>...</b>

I have always wanted to see how it had looked with full Lightsaber effects. Therefor,"STORM Rotoscoping" decided to rotoscope and add soundeffects to the "main fight" so that the film would be more complete. (Didn't had time or fortitude to rotoscope the whole film). Hey, guys. :-) Just a short and rather boring clip of me working on the SUPERHERO collab days before it was uploaded in YouTube. I just thought you may be interested in seeing how I work in Adobe After Effects CS4 (which I may say is a powerful tool). For the first tow clips, I did a process called ROTOSCOPING. It is a method in which you painstakingly trace the outline of a moving subject in a video. What you do is you drop out the figure by moving vertices along an animated mask. You move around the points to contain the edges you want along the timeline of the layer. So if your subject moves a lot, you're going to have to drag the vertices of your mask around frame-by-frame. Rotoscoping takes a lot of patience and time. That's how I was able to cut out CitizenMars and Trebornoican from their background. The third clip is relatively easier because it has been shot over a keyable backdrop. I removed the green screen wall behind WalangMagawaProd through the use of KeyLight. A plug in in After Effcets. That's just about it. It's been a pleasure boring you. Hahahaha. :-)

After months and months of rotoscoping, masking, adding clashes, sound effects, and freaking out, I finally finished this!! I very happy with everything. I hope you will enjoy it a lot, because I know the lot of you guys have waited so long to see this done. Of course, it's not perfect, there are some tiny errors and sometimes the audio is a bit weird (I mean the lightsaber sounds effects), but overall, I think I did a great job. This is my final animation rotoscope pass on the Transformers 3 Dark of the Moon - Official Trailer. One of the things I've found that really relieves stress is animating with a Wacom tablet in Toon Boom Animate. To really just live in the drawing you need to set aside the thoughts of timing and form - to do that I've found that using movie trailers as reference for rotoscope animation can works wonders. Just sketching them out frame by frame is amazingly enjoyable. Plus there is a lot to learn from each frame of a trailer from both an editing and an animating perspective. I love drawing and editing so it's pretty much the perfect combo for me. With this technique the quirks from your drawing style are embedded in the final animation, but you don't need to slave over timing and form quite as much as you would doing traditional drawn animation from scratch. That being said, you can play with timing and action while rotoscoping I tried about three different endings before settling on one I liked. I'm still not 100% on this one but I needed to get it up and out and move on. So here it is in all it's glory.
