I bought a wagner 1000 heat gun for $20 from the paint department at walmart. It has two temperature settings: 750 and 1000 degrees fahrenheit which is certainly enough and gives you an actual reflow compared to the "overheat method" used by most x-clamp fix tutorials. If you've done an x-clamp fix and still have a red ring this is why. After removing x-clamps and heatshinks and thoroughly cleaning both cpu and gpu of all the thermal paste, do 1 minute on the low setting over the entire bottom of the board (about a fist-length away). Then flip to the top and heatgun the cpu, gpu, ram, southbridge and hana on high for 4 minutes. Then let the system sit for 30+ minutes. Be sure not to move the system in any way while it's cooling! After the system has cooled, apply fresh thermal paste and re-apply your x-clamp fixes. The screws I use have a 2mm head so when I use a 1mm thick #10 nylon washer this gives me 3mm total, which is the same height as the standoffs around the chassis. This means drilling is not necessary as your motherboard will be flat and even with the standoffs. Do not use 2mm worth of washers on the bottom! On the top between the heatsink and motherboard you do need to use 2mm worth of washers. Tighten down well but you dont have to torque them down as hard as you can! In this way you can <b>...</b>

[cutaway: list of tools] Presto Griddle Heat Gun(500F) Arctic Silver Remover or Alcohol/Goo Gone Arctic Silver 4 Machine Screws 1/2" Aluminum Foil Metal Tape hex ScrewDriver T-10 Small Screwdriver Kit 8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws Partial Resemble 16 #10 Flat Washers [Nylon] 16 5mm Flat Washers [Metal] so lets start off by removing the casing. adding artic silver to xbox RROD If you still have your warranty you can just send it to Microsoft, if you dont you can do the x-clamp fix you can easily do it your self, there is also many videos for it. its a good idea to look at some videos first so you can get and idea of what you are going to do. you can by the kit at X-clampfix.com or you can by the materials your self, you only need: 1) 16 #10 metal washers (I dont use them up to you) 2) 16 #10 nylon washers 3) 8 M5-.80x10 screws 4) artic silver 5 thermal compound (thermal paste) first put a metal washer on the screw and then add the nylon washer then put the screw through the mother board hole, then put the NYLON washer on the screw, then the metal washer and screw it to the heat sink. do that for all screws. Ohh if you are going to change the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU just watch a video to get an idea and dont put to much. After you have replaced the x-clamps with the screws you need to bake the 360 (there is also a video for that from the same guy, he doesnt talk he just shows you, you have to read) the nylon washers are kind of hard to find, I found mines at ACE hardware store, just look for them you might find them in Menards or any hard ware store. just watch some videos and follow what they say and dont scratch the mother board, CPU or GPU. Not only does this provide a solid mount for you to work on, but more importantly, it keeps the board from warping as much when you apply heat to the board. The jig in the video is for an Xbox 360, but it's the same exact process for a PS3. Please refer to my PS3 YLOD Fix video for additional information on how to repair the YLOD on the PS3. The all thread I used was 1/8" for the smaller holes around the outside of the board and 5/32" for the larger holes surrounding the processors (it's the same sizes for, both, the PS3 and the 360). 1/8" would probably work for everything though.
