The show featured a running gag in which cast members Julie Brown, Tom Kenny, Wayne Knight, Jill Talley, Carol Rosenthal Jennifer Aniston, & James Stephens would get killed off in various ways at the beginning of each episode during the intro. When Jimmy starts removing furniture and equipment from WNYX due to budget shortfalls, Dave sets out to investigate where the missing money went and the trail leads to Bill. Meanwhile, Matthew introduces everyone to his identical twin brother, who happens to look nothing like him. Jon Stewart, an actor/comedian/talk-show host, stars as Matthew's twin brother Andrew. Instead of the usual end credits we have Beth doing some window gags for Dave's amusement. Unfortunately, Maura Tierney does not appear in this episode, she was busy filming The Broadway Brawler in Delaware and then Liar Liar with Jim Carrey. In this episode, there is speculation that Matthew is adopted. Andy Dick is adopted in real life. Jimmy: Follow the money. As Dave tries to figure out the budget overrun, Jimmy repeats the advice Deep Throat gave Woodward and Bernstein during their Watergate investigations. This is part of the series' long running gag that Jimmy James may actually be Deep Throat. Jimmy: Morning Sam. Bill: Morning Ralph. Jimmy: I love that joke. Jimmy and Bill are referencing the cartoons of Warner Brothers animation great Chuck Jones, more specifically his series featuring Ralph the sheepdog and Sam the wolf(who bore an uncanny resemblance to Wile E. Psych-The Three Hole Punch(er) Joke
A recurring gag featured in the show's outtakes involves the cast and crew laughing hysterically at the mention of the phrase "three-hole punch". According to James Roday, the gag began with a script written by Tim Meltreger, which included a joke about a three-hole punch. During filming, Roday misspoke the line as "three-hole puncher". Meltreger called for a cut and raced onto the set, then insisted that Roday read the line exactly as scripted, because, in his words, "Three-hole punch is *way* funnier than three-hole puncher!" Subsequently, it became a running joke on the set: someone says the words "three-hole punch" while shooting and the cast and crew all pretend to laugh as if it's the funniest thing they've ever heard.
