The Eastern Front of World War II was a theatre of World War II between the European Axis powers and co-belligerent Finland against the Soviet Union, Poland, and some other Allies which encompassed Northern, Southern and Eastern Europe from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945. It was known by many different names depending on the nation, notably the Great Patriotic War (Russian: Великая Отечественная Война) in the former Soviet Union and Russia, while known in Germany as the Eastern Front (German: die Ostfront), the Eastern Campaign (German: der Ostfeldzug) or the Russian Campaign (German: der Rußlandfeldzug) The battles on the Eastern Front constituted the largest military confrontation in history. They were characterized by unprecedented ferocity, wholesale destruction, mass deportations, and immense loss of life variously due to combat, starvation, disease, and massacres. The Eastern Front, as the site of nearly all extermination camps, death marches, ghettos, and the majority of pogroms, was central to the Holocaust. Of the estimated 70 million deaths attributed to World War II, over 30 million, many of them civilians, died on the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front was decisive in determining the outcome of World War II, eventually serving as the main reason for Germany's defeat. It resulted in the destruction of the Third Reich, the partition of Germany and the rise of the Soviet Union as a military and industrial superpower. The two principal belligerent powers were Nazi ...

--SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT World War II VIDEOS---- --UPLOADED Weekly--- Videos Running Time 00:54:00 in 6 Parts TANKS!: Barbarossa This episode of the excellent series; Tanks, chronicles the early days of the Barbarossa campaign in Russia. German intelligence seriously underestimated the Soviet Unions tank strength. However, Russian tactics were pathetic. And with Stalins order not to retreat, entire army fronts were swallowed up. Soviet attacks were poorly coordinated and lacked any real deep penetrating threat. Effective radio communications between tanks was non-existent. German anti-tank gunners had a field day, while German amour raced ahead. However, Hitler became overconfident. Hitler viewed Operation Barbarossa as pretty much over after the Kiev encirclement. Army Group South was believed to be the first army group to encounter the new Russian super tank. The T-34 was an incredible shock to German forces. A seemly backward country, had produced a tank, which was so far superior; it rendered all German tanks obsolete. German 37mm and 50mm anti-tank guns simply ricochet off the well sloped thick armored T-34s. Its wide track and excellent suspension could out-perform any German tank. Its simple design was quickly mass-produced. The T-34 was easily the best tank in the world in 1941. Enjoy this excellent episode of TANKS! Before invading Poland, Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, securing the eastern border of Germany. Limited trade, mostly on the part of the Russians, was part of the agreement. But everyone involved knew that it was a measure on both sides to buy time. Ideologically, both nations despised the other. Hitler had devoted much of Mein Kampf to his believe in the menace of Communism. Nazism was against everything Communism stood for. Part of the operational planning of the German high command involved a possible invasion of the Soviet Union. On July 21, a month after the fall of France, Hitler summoned Generalfeldmarshal Walther von Brauchitsch and instructed him to plan for an invasion of the Soviet Union
