Can you get a reliable Russian-made AK-variant rifle for less than $500? Yes. Things may change but as of 2010 it is possible. The Saiga rifles offered by Russian American Armory Company are made on the same production lines as the AK-74 and AK-100 series of Russian service rifles and share their same reliability and durability. At least that's what Mr. Clyde Woods from RAAC tells us in this Nutnfancy 2010 SHOT Show booth review (and he was a great host!). I am inclined to agree and wouldn't hesitate buying the type. Featuring hammer forged, chrome-lined barrels and chrome-lined bores and chambers, the Saigas shown here should shoot accurately and last a long time. The Saigas were engineered from the outset to be a commercial AKM variant and as such depart heavily from the AK/AKM feature set. As such they are "less threatening" and thus more importable. Although the Saiga rifles feature similar stamped receivers (about 1mm thickness) they lack many of the genuine AK/AKM features like: dimpled receiver for magazine stability, upper handguard and pistol grip, standard AK fire control group (Saigas use their own trigger arrangements), receiver notches for safety catch, bayonet-capable front sight block with muzzle device (Saigas have neutered front sight, no threading or muzzle device), integral cleaning rod, AK gas block with vent holes, and standard AK magazine capability (Saigas take a proprietary magazine, modification for capability IS possible for some Saigas [barrel <b>...</b>

This is the first time I have hit the range with Federal Multi Purpose bulk pack. I usually fire Winchester Universal and get fairly good results, but the soft hulls were catching in the extractor slot. I did a slot mod before this outing and the Federal has harder hulls that resist deforming in the drums. These are the results. Enjoy.... evl

The new KSG shotgun runs with full "pipes" and we also pit it up against the artillery-heavy but fast shootin' PFIDude modded out Saiga-12 auto shotgun. Which one takes the gold? The vid starts out with me running the KSG with 00 Buckshot in several rounds. It causes a bit of pain and makes accurate hitting more difficult (ever done it?). I have a few embarrassing misses on one run and not having brought enough shotgun ammo, have to transition to my 1911 to clear the course. Just like in real life, things rarely go as planned and you just have to adapt and press on. But with good pistol shootin', that 28 pt KSG run takes that round of runs. That's followed by my unimpressive Win 1300 run where a hostage hit kills my score (details below). Then roll in the PFIDude Saiga-12 tactical shotgun and we see the speed of the runs accelerate. But as we fatigue, the hits are harder to make and it takes real concentration on the fundamentals and some mental toughness to connect (especially with Buckshot) with the longer targets. The Saiga-12 turns in the fastest times with its no-reload drum mag and fast engagements; while heavy it shoots smooth and fast. PFIDude chalks up a fast run with the Saiga but I manage the fastest run of the course with it, throwing down perfect 36 score in the process. Suck it. However it's heavy and big as outfitted and the svelt little KSG dominates it in SAWC. Near the end Chad tries his hand at slug shooting with the KSG and he sucks big time. I have <b>...</b>

The weapon was firing Winchester Universal bulk ammo from Walmart, $22.97 per 100 rounds in my area. The hulls are extremely soft and distort easily which causes them to catch on the barrel hood or feed ramps. Overall, I am happy with the results and expected to have at least one failure of some sort. These weapons are somewhat picky with ammo, but they can be made to run well with nearly everything if you know what you are doing. I hope this video will inspire you just as the "Van Killer" video inpired me a few years ago. Keep your barrel hot....

Saiga 12 with a tapco t-6 stock, King Armory gas tappet, surefire mag. 5 922r parts, making it compliant I wanted to start reviewing some of the firearms I own, so I thought i'd start with the Saiga 12. I also confirmed that I have 3 gas ports, none are blocked. I also want to clarify why I think the stock was effecting the ejection. Its the same concept as limp wristing a pistol and it not ejecting. I had fired about 200 shells of 7 1/2 shot on several occasions with the origional stock with maybe 2-3 FTE, with proper cleaning and maintenance, its only after I swapped the stock that I went from 1-2% FTE to 100% FTE. My Saiga 12, like many other S12's, has issues with cycling low brass reliably. I talk about the mods that have already been done to the gas system, as well as install an MD Arms V Plug and CSS Performance Puck and range test them. **Sorry forgot to mention in the video that it runs on setting 3 with low brass. My Saiga 223 is another one of the black rifles (aka "ugly guns") in my collection. It is an AK-47 style rifle but instead of the traditional 7.62x39mm, it shoots .223 (or 5.56x45mm). The reason I chose a Saiga chambered in .223 was because I intend to purchase an AR-15 at some point and wanted the ability to share ammo between the two rifles. This rifle is a blast to shoot (no pun intended)! But, because of the relatively high cost of .223 ammo, I rarely get to shoot it. One thing I like to do in order to extend my shooting sessions and keep overall ammo costs down is to mix up calibers when I'm out in the field shooting. During this session, I had my Saiga 223 and Chiappa 1911-22 out with me. Mixing .22 in with .223 helps prolong shooting time without breaking the bank. The main purpose of this field test was to break in the replacement magazine I received from ProMag. Big thanks go out to them for standing behind their lifetime guarantee and quickly replacing the defective magazine I had purchased. The replacement performed at 100% throughout the day's testing. A short tutorial on how to remove the original/factory butt stock and foregrip on a Saiga 12 shotgun (may also work with other Saiga variations - not sure!) There are three (3) screws to remove for the butt stock (take off dust cover and recoil spring to reveal the third) and just one (1) screw to remove on the foregrip (the one fastening the sling swivel). **note** the instructions for removing the butt stock are the same for removing the stock on an AK-47.
