Classic BBC Radio Theme ~ Shipping Forecast (Sailing By)
This is "Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge in 1963, and performed by the Alan Perry/William Gardner Orchestra, and is the version used by the BBC for its late night shipping forecast. Sailing By is played every night on BBC Radio 4 at around 00:45hrs before the late Shipping Forecast. Its tune is repetitive, assisting in its role of serving as a signal for sailors tuning in to be able to easily identify the radio station. It also functions as a buffer — depending on when the final programme before closedown finishes, Sailing By (or part of it) is played as a 'filler' as the shipping forecast starts at 00:48hrs precisely. The initial reason for its introduction was because of the indeterminate finish time for the preceding Midnight News, leading to filling music being played until the Shipping Forecast was due to start. Sailing By was added to allow for a clear break between the end of the music and the start of the forecast

The Navy aircraft carrier responsible for burying the body of Osama bin Laden at sea docked Wednesday morning at Naval Base Coronado, ending a 198-day deployment. The 5500 sailors and air wing personnel aboard the USS Carl Vinson were told to keep quiet about the bin Laden mission, but they and their families expressed pride for their role in history. Hundreds waited to embrace their loved ones and some new mothers introduced their husbands to their babies for the first time as live music played in the background at the homecoming celebration.

A Sailor's Life - Fairport Convention
Fairport Convention's version of this poignant traditional song marks a pivotal point in the development of folk-rock, representing as it does a brilliant fusion of a traditional form with all the dynamic, exploratory approach of modern rock playing. The song had been a part of Sandy Denny's repertoire when she joined Fairport. As a traditional song it had been known in many forms. A Sailor's Life starts as a plaintive lament on the fickleness of sailors and the agonised waiting endured by their sweethearts until their return. The terrible irony of her rather bitter condemnation of the sailor's life as 'merry' is brought home by the subsequent tragedy. The singer extols her beloved's virtues before she sets off to find him. She hails a passing ship and is told that he is feared drowned. Beside herself with grief and despair, she runs her boat against a rock. This could be seen as a metaphor for another tragedy as she takes her own life. The song then echoes the stormy course of the bereaved woman's grief, as it takes off into a passage of terrific ensemble playing, all instruments interweaving, building to an overwhelming intensity, before settling to a sombre resolution. There are echoes of everything from dirges to hornpipes in an extraordinary composition. The Unhalfbricking album, from which A Sailor's Life comes, foreshadowed the more overtly folk-rock album Liege & Lief, often considered a classic of its kind. USS Ronald Reagan Sailors deliver aid to Japan
PACIFIC OCEAN (March 13, 2011) US Navy Sailors assigned to the Black Knights of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 4 and Japanese relief workers load supplies aboard an SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter to support earthquake and tsunami relief efforts near Sendai, Japan. The helicopter then flies along the coast before landing at Takihama, Japan where US and Japanese forces work together to unload the helicopters. HS-4 is embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) off the coast of Japan rendering humanitarian assistance following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami as part of Operation Tomodachi. At this time, Paramount/Famous Studios still held onto the Superman lisence but had stopped making Superman cartoons due to their high production costs. They put it to good use here in a semi-crossover between two of the world's most renown "super" men. Olive Oyl is in love with the man of steel, and an eavesdropping Bluto shows up dressed as Superman to impress Olive. What follows is a series of challenges where Popeye sets out to prove he is a better man than "Stupidman". The Paramount titles on this cartoon are the original ones (one of the few Technicolor Popeye's widely available with original titles), and this cartoon was sourced for the Paramount titles on the color Famous shorts featured on most Season 4 episodes of "The Popeye Show".

The Sailor's Hornpipe (also known as The College Hornpipe and Jack's the Lad[1]) is a traditional hornpipe melody. The usual tune for this dance was first printed as the "College Hornpipe" in 1797 or 1798 by J. Dale of London. [2]. It was found in manuscript collections before then - for instance the fine syncopated version in William Vickers' manuscript, written on Tyneside, dated 1770 [3]. The dance imitates the life of a sailor and their duties aboard ship. Sailors from the Royal Navy are believed to have invented the solo dance, as an exercise aboard ship[4]. Due to the small space that the dance required, and no need for a partner, the dance was popular on-board ship[5]. It is likely that the Sailor's Hornpipe was originally performed on the wet deck of a ship, in bare feet[4]. Accompaniment may have been the music of a tin whistle or, from the 19th century, a squeezebox. Samuel Pepys referred to it in his diary as "The Jig of the Ship" and Captain Cook, who took a piper on at least one voyage, is noted to have ordered his men to dance the hornpipe in order to keep them in good health[5].
