Julian Schnabel - over painted Polaroids

The american artist Julian Schnabel became famous in the early 1980s for his plate paintings. He also made a name for himself as a director and screenplay writer with his first film, which was about his friend and fellow artist, "Jean-Michel Basquiat" (1996) and his second film, "Before Night Falls". He has exhibited in all the world's greatest museums and his works can be found in outstanding public and private collections. In this short Schnabel talkes about his series of over painted Polaroids. The original Polaroids Schnabel used a huge, spectacular 20 x 24-inch Polaroid camera on wheels dating from the 1970s to create unusually large-format images (51 x 61 cm) which are now exhibited at the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf (30.05.-11.07). Pianist Arthur Schnabel Home Movie 1937

Filmed in 1937 by Karol Liszniewski in Cincinnati, Ohio. Arthur Schnabel (April 17, 1882 -- August 15, 1951) was a classical pianist, who also composed and taught. Schnabel was renowned for his seriousness as a musician, avoiding anything resembling pure technical bravura. He was said to have tended to disregard his own technical limitations in pursuit of his musical ideals. However, Schnabel is widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, whose vitality, profundity and spiritual penetration in his playing of works by Beethoven and Schubert, in particular, have seldom if ever been surpassed. Born in Lipnik, Poland, Schnabel studied piano from the age of seven in Vienna under Theodor Leschetizky who said to him "You will never be a pianist. You are a musician." Schnabel took these words to heart, and rather than playing the showy virtuoso pieces by composers like Franz Liszt which were popular in the late 19th century, he chose to concentrate on Germanic classics by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Later, Schnabel also studied composition under Eusebius Mandyczewski who was a friend of Johannes Brahms. In 1900, Schnabel moved to Berlin where he began his career as a professional pianist. He gained some fame thanks to orchestral concerts he gave under the conductor Artur Nikisch as well as playing in chamber music and accompanying his future wife, the contralto Therese Behr, in lieder. It seems that Behr had some influence over Schnabel's <b>...</b>

Artur Schnabel plays Mozart Rondo in A minor, K.511

1946 recording. ~~~ Artur Schnabel (1882 - 1951), was born in Lipnik, Austria. Schnabel's piano career began at age six, when his sister's piano teacher noticed that he instantly mastered, without teaching, the lessons his sister had to practice. Schnabel made his public debut at age 11. By 1898 he was still studying piano in Vienna but was good enough to take on piano students himself; financially independent, if barely so, he headed for Berlin, Germany. Schnabel's career was slow to build, but after he gave a Berlin debut concert featuring the music of Franz Schubert, he acquired an agent and began to find intermittent concert engagements. After a series of performances as soloist with the renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Schnabel became a recognized name in German musical life. In the years prior to World War I he toured most of the major European countries, including Russia. Schnabel's repertoire ran straight up the middle of the intellectual Germanic tradition, seldom straying from that path. He favored music that seemed to hold profundities that would forever be just beyond his grasp, once saying, according to Saerchinger, "Now I am attracted only to music which I consider to be better than it can be performed." He loved the comparatively simple sonatas of Mozart, pointing out that "Children are given Mozart because of the small quantity of the notes; grown-ups avoid Mozart because of the great quality of the notes." Artur Schnabel plays Schubert Sonata D959 in A major (II)

I. Allegro - Part I : www.youtube.com - Part II : www.youtube.com II. Andantino III. Scherzo - Allegro vivace www.youtube.com IV. Rondo - Allegretto www.youtube.com ~~~ The three piano sonatas numbered 958 in C minor, 959 in A major and 960 in B-flat major in Deutsch's catalogue of Franz Schubert's complete works are the composer's last major compositions for the piano, often referred to as Last Sonatas. They were written during the last months of Schubert's life, between the spring and autumn of 1828, but were not published until about ten years after his death, in 1838-39. Furthermore, like the rest of Schuberts piano sonatas, they were mostly neglected during the entire 19th century, and have only gradually achieved public appreciation, after more than 100 years since their composition. Schubert probably began sketching the sonatas sometime around the spring months of 1828; the final versions were written in September. The final sonata was completed on September 26, and two days later, Schubert played from the sonata trilogy at an evening gathering in Vienna. In a letter to Probst (one of his publishers), dated October 2, 1828, Schubert mentioned the sonatas amongst other works he had recently completed and wished to publish. Probst was not interested in the sonatas and by November 19, Schubert was dead. In the following year Schubert's brother Ferdinand sold the sonatas' autographs to another publisher, Anton Diabelli, who eventually published them about ten years <b>...</b>

Artur Schnabel, String Quartet No. 4 - i Molto moderato

Despite his performing repertoire being concentrated largely on the works of Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and Brahms, almost all of Artur Schnabel's own compositions (none of which are in the active repertoire) are atonal. (It is interesting, in this regard, to note that Schnabel was a close friend of Arnold Schoenberg, his Austrian-American compatriot, who was famous as a pioneering composer of atonal and twelve-tone music.) They are "difficult" yet fascinating and complex works, and are marked by genuine originality of style. Composers Ernst Krenek and Roger Sessions have commented that they show signs of undoubted genius (see biography of Schnabel by Cesar Saerchinger). Schnabel's list of compositions eventually included three symphonies, a piano concerto, a piano sonata (premiered by Eduard Erdmann at the 1925 Venice ISCM Festival[10]) and five string quartets, amongst various smaller works. Harmonically, the first movement of Artur Schnabel's fourth string quartet (dating from 1924) is by far the most complex of the quartet, making extensive use of "unordered aggregates" -- one per measure -- or, in other words, the use of all twelve pitches (or more properly "pitch classes") in each of the initial measures for quite an extended period. Indeed, one could speculate that this use of all "pitch classes" per measure is the factor which determines the placement of the barlines. From 1925 Schnabel taught at the Berlin State Academy, where his masterclasses brought him great <b>...</b>
