This video shows the reaction of sodium hydroxide (drain cleaner) with ammonium nitrate (fertilizer). You might think that ammonium nitrate is wayyyy better than sodium nitrate. In fact this is not true: Ammonium nitrate is less suitable for redox reactions (eg black powder) and a detonation can only be achieved if you have some initial explosive, which I don´t. Here´s why an infrared camera gives a better contrast than a normal camera: The sky is blue because oxygen atoms and aerosols reflect blue light rather than other wavelengths. That means in the pure infrared spectrum, te sky is much darker than to the human eye. Clouds on the other hand reflect infrared light very well. About as well as normal light too. This increases the contrast between the dark sky and the bright clouds. So I finally started learning C++ and thought a nice first project would be a fractal plotter. I rendered 2049 frames and threw them into Windows Movie Maker (which of couse took 15 tries until it rendered without crashing or messing up the audio track). The quality in the final movie is quite bad, but I don't know why, because the compression is okay (even better than what I normally upload) and the raw frames look epic. What I have yet to tackle is the limited precision of the double-data type, which limits the maximum reasonable agnification to what you see here (no idea what magnification it actually is, though) and a more intelligent algorithm to choose the max-iterations , increasing performance and quality of the outcome. More things to do include a custom color palette and direct uncompressed AVI output instead of a bunch of bitmaps. Also, no idea why the scaling is so weird again, but that was Youtube.
