Follow: @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo Watch: YouTube.com/Slatester, SlateV.com Science fiction writers, you have a new inspiration. Researchers have successfully stored data in the DNA of living cells. After three years and 750 different trials, scientists finally found a method for repeatedly encoding, storing, and erasing the digital information within the DNA, as part of a partnership between Stanford University's schools of engineering and medicine. Think of their creation as a bioengineering bit; Graduate student Pakpoom Subsoontorn explains, "If the DNA section points in one direction, it's a zero. If it points the other way, it's a one." How could this data storage be used? Researchers say it could prove a powerful tool for studying everything from cancer and aging to the natural environment. Some day, doctors might even be able to use the data stored in living cells to effectively "turn off" cancer cells and stop them from multiplying. Don't get your hopes up too fast though—researchers say engineering biology further could be a decade away at least. That's enough time to write that science fiction novel AND sell the movie rights. During a press briefing, Scientists discussed new findings by NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX spacecraft which are helping fill holes in our knowledge about the matter found between the stars in our Milky Way galaxy. IBEX, whose primary focus has been the interaction between our solar system and what lies beyond, has directly sampled multiple heavy elements within this interstellar medium, the same materials of which stars, planets -- even people, are made.

In The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain -- a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It's a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they do battle with the pirate-hating Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a young Charles Darwin (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure! The idea of turning invisible could be closer to 'science fact' than 'science fiction'. Researchers at the University of Texas have for the first time used an invisibility cloak to make a three-dimensional object. One cloaking technique uses so-called meta-materials to redirect light, creating 2-dimensional invisibility; another uses a heat panel to create a mirage effect, bending the light to trick the eye. The latest advance uses plasmonic meta-materials to cancel all reflected light. No reflection means the object disappears into 3-dimensional invisibility. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from London.

Scientists at Switzerland's CERN research centre say they have found signs of a theoretical sub-atomic particle believed to be the basic building block of the universe. The scientists conducted two separate experiments to try to locate the so-called God particle, wherein protons were fired into each other inside a 27Km long tunnel. They have stopped short of calling it an official discovery, but the research has got the science world buzzing. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports.

www.euronews.com Global warming is having a serious impact on the earth's water cycle. The water cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. Australian researchers say the greenhouse effect is accelerating the cycle at almost twice the rate predicted by climate change models. Scientists, who carried out tests on a series of ocean samples, found that the acceleration of the water cycle has changed rainfall and evaporation, which has increased the ocean's salinity. A warmer atmosphere can absorb more water vapour but do due to prevailing winds the rain is not falling in the same places - causing drought in many areas. Researcher Susan Wijffels said: "The areas that are already dominated by rainfall and that are already wet are getting wetter, and the areas that are arid where evaporation dominates, those areas are getting drier." And this will have an impact on the growth and supply of food. When water evaporates from the surface of the ocean, it leaves the salt behind and increased saltiness which contributes to drought. To monitor these trends scientists have deployed numerous buoys in the ocean. They hope that in the future they can track the oceans salt levels. www.euronews.net Nothing in the universe is faster than the speed of light - or is it? Scientists at CERN in Geneva say they have discovered sub-atomic particles that move even faster than the universally accepted rate of 300000 kilometres a second. Experts say the discovery is a game-changer - and is more significant than the discovery of radioactivity. If proven, it will blow Einstein's 1905 theory of relativity - a fundamental pillar of physics - out of the water.

Researchers in Geneva have discovered sub-atomic particles which appear to travel faster than the speed of light. The finding could force scientists to rethink the fundamentals of physics. It has surprised them so much they are asking other scientists to replicate their results. Al Jazeera's Peter Sharp reports.

Researchers at the CERN nuclear research centre in Switzerland discover sub-atomic particles that travel quicker than the speed of light.
