Stronghold (PC) Game Review

A real beauty here. Released in 2001, Stronghold has it all bar perhaps good graphics: sold gameplay, a story mode which eases you in, sufficient depth and a bit of humour thrown in. Not much else to say really other than a thoroughly enjoyable game still.

A bit of a hit and miss game this one, but for the most part an improvement over the original. With any luck Firefly will stick with this series and release another some day as it's a real niche game with qualities not found in many other strategy games.

Z: Steel Soldiers (PC) Game Review

A strategy game with a difference. Good in small amounts to add some variety to your RTS playing. The territory acquisition system at the heart of the game requires the player to defend what he/she can before encroaching futher into the enemy's territory. The wide open maps usually allow attack from a variety of positions and the unit selection is decent. The game's main problems are that over the course of the campaign it can drag on and the drab colours and lack of music can depress after a while. The missions are fairly long but with very little story progression or cutscenes fails to engage the player. That said, it's still definately worth a look at and play simply for its unique take on RTS gaming just don't be surprised if you stop part-way through the single-player campaign.

The 2000 version. If you have people over and LAN Unreal Tournament doesn't go down well with your guests (if their motor skills don't extend past clicking a mouse once every 2 minutes) they may find this more to their liking. The Game of Life video game is quite relaxing and does everything it needs to. Can't say much else really - either you like PC board games or you don't. If you do, this would make a nice addition to the collection.

Commandos 2 (PC) Game Review

How to describe this fairly unique strategy game? Commandos 2 is a strategy game set during WW2 and sees you using highly specialised soldiers to force your way into German compounds to rescue prisoners of WWII or technical documents etc... In the process of which you'll set man traps for prison guards, sneak up on them and stab them for silent kills or you can simply fire off a shot like I do and wait with a machine gun prepared for the alerted guards to rush round a corner before despatching an entire bunch of them. What I don't mention too much of in the review is that you'll be using sniper rifles (among other weapons), will drug food for guards to make them fall asleep, you'll be crawling and running past enemy sentries and generally have a host of them to kill before reaching your objectives. As I say in the review it's easier to say why this game falls short of a "good" 7 mark than explain why it's still a highly playable game. It succeeds in creating an addictive game that just requires "one more attempt" and because of its sometimes boring repetition it also is quite relaxing and doesn't require too much thinking (unless you're unsure of mission objectives in which case you'll be having to scour the entire level for it). eg You creep up on guards, stab them, move the body, repeat the process hundreds of times. I stand by my comment that Commandos 2 is no classic but that certainly doesn't make it a bad game.

Crime Cities (PC) Game Review

A video review for the 1997 PC game "Crime Cities". This game was incredibly good fun once the player sorted out the starting controls and turned the difficulty right down to Very Easy. By modern standards it may be a bit repetitive or bland, but racing round 3D cities in flying cars shooting at enemies has never been more fun. Certainly I've never played any game quite like it on the PC. Well worth a look at if you can find a copy. While features-wise it might sound a bit limited and from my always uninterested commentary, the game is one that takes time to master the flying on and has a simple nature to it which can still be very absorbing over games which do many things but badly. The final point I have to emphasise is that it was FUN. Unlike many other games, I actually took the time to complete this 6 or so years ago and can therefore recommend it. Feel free to leave comments or ask me questions about it. System Requirements: Windows 98/NT 4.0/2000/ Pentium II 200 MHz (recommended 233 MHz)/ 32 MB RAM (recommend 64 MB RAM)/ OpenGL compatible 3D accelerated graphics card with 4 MB VRAM/ DirectX 6.0/ 8x CD-ROM/ Sound card ~ Edit: 1) You can't choose your planets as suggested but complete them in order like levels 2) For changing the compatability, right click on the application and go to "Properties" which has an option at the top bar to change "Compatability" after which you can change it from Vista or whatever operating system you have to Win 98/ME.

Sid Meier's Pirates (PC) Game Review

An easy recommend for those who want a game they can make progress in when tight on time or the casual gamer. It's bright, gorgeous to look at, accessible, has a well suited soundtrack and decent interface and control system - the only downside is that after the first 10 or so hours it may appear to lack some depth. Having said that, for a sandbox game it's got a good variety of things (even if they aren't overly complicated) moreso than a lot of other games that claim that label. Overall, good fun without a hint of frustration (always welcome).

GUN (PS2) Game Review Part 1/2

GUN, simply put, is a fantastic 3rd person running-and-gunning, sandbox adventure. While there are plenty of things to compliment it, the two biggest selling-points at least for me are its lack of frustration or issues (in other words there's very little I can mark it down for) and its decent story and superb dialogue. Like I say in the review, I can't stand Westerns, I dislike them with a passion, but when something's done right you can't help but admire it and GUN combines a fun, enjoyable game with a deep, well-told story making it a fantastic buy even some years later.

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday (PC) Game Review

Paradox's WWII strategy simulator. Move units, engage in diplomacy, fund technology research. Sounds like there's plenty to be getting on with in this game. It's gripes come in the form of a very slow start when playing from 1936 and a lack of countries to really take part as (I played the main ones to death really) and so less replayability than Vicky. That said, this is certainly not a bad game in fact it's quite good and enjoyable in places, though the score given reflects the limitations mentioned.

Well, I couldn't wait to play this game back in 2002 (not something I say about many games) and the anticipation was actually deserved. It surpassed my expectations in graphical terms, in control and ease of use over lightsaber combat and force powers. With a decent story, decent voice acting and a good variety of levels this game still feels like a Dark Forces game only BETTER. That's no easy thing to do and I thoroughly hope they continue this great series in the future.

The 2007 Positech political simulator where you seek to get re-elected as a government of a fabricated nation and solve the multitude of social problems you are given on your entry into the game. The game IS addictive to begin with but once you get over the initial phase you realise there's nothing to keep you playing the game once you've completed a few scenarios and the formula is fairly simple. That's not to say this isn't a novel or different game, just that for the price on their website you might expect more in the way of longevity. Their official site is: positech.co.uk

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (PC) Game Review

Another fine game from Raven. While the game has issues with game length (around 10 hours) and has the most dull final boss battle I've ever fought in a game, it's still well worth playing especially if you're a Star Trek or Voyager fan. Had they fixed those two issues mentioned and given the player a few more multi-player maps, this game would be looking at an almost-perfect 9+ score because the rest of the game is just so well done and has characterisation and story that most games (not just FPSs) could only dream of having.

Shogun: Total War (PC) Game Review

A game that has changed strategy gaming forever. While this is hardly my favourite game ever, it was a game of many firsts, set in an interesting era and is, in the long view, still one of creative assembly's best titles only really beaten in my opinion by the subsequent Rome: Total War. From the entertaining and high-quality video cut-scenes to the ability to throw hundreds of samurai against your enemies, this game was a great opening title. It only misses out on a 8 score due to the risk-style movement of armies, absence of any meaningful diplomacy and often repetitive border map battles. Certainly one that I wouldn't say no to a 3D sequel.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 (PC) Game Review

Released in 1997, this FPS set in the star wars universe gave the star wars fan everything he/she could ask for bar perhaps decent lightsaber combat (that would come with the subsequent iteration). With a story that was long and drawn out and levels to match, you may question whether some of it was just filler but despite that it ticked all the right boxes. That this game doesn't score so well today should not be seen as a slight against the game but rather a compliment to its sequel which plays so well that it makes its predecessor (a thoroughly decent - some would say classic - game) look tame by comparison. Perhaps one day they make remake this using the JKO engine. Who knows?

KKND Xtreme (PC) Game Review

The 1997 RTS which never quite got the same attention as C&C or Red Alert from Westwood. Personally I prefered this game as it had tonnes of character and had great visual explosions and sound effects. It's minor failings such as no background music, dodgy pathfinding and lack of air or naval units are all easily overlooked. However, the absence of a sell and repair function (from a menu) as well as an absence of a Mobile Construction Vehicle (not to mention a lack of save in skirmish mode) very much do impede the possible success of this game and the strategy element. The Xtreme expansion allows for skirmish or "kaos mode" and is a very welcome addition. You can download this game today from www.download-full-games.com though with the expected signup hoops to jump through. Overall it could have been the classic 2D strategy game of the 1990s but fell just short of it but is still very playable and enjoyable.

...me. The Sands of Time was a terrific action/adventure game which excelled in its platforming elements. This is a revisited review so it doesn't fare as well but still highly playable and one I can recommend to those who never played it first time around. The fighting's pretty pish and it drags just a little towards the end but these are pretty small gripes really against an otherwise solid game.

This video will deal with: *RGOs *Land fortifications/Naval bases *Creating leaders/admirals and assigning them *Stats screens *Creating Satelites *Social policies - So there we have it, I know I'm bound to have left out some items such as research points (for use with open negotiations trading for techs) but hopefully that's everything a beginner needs to get started with this game. While it should go without saying, I will for clarification make clear here that any nations conquered, satelited or annexed during these videos was done with for no other reasons than due to strategic merit or proximity to my nation so don't take any of this seriously or personally as it's just a game. Other than that, good luck with this game and enjoy!
