Kayak Cowboy Self-rescue (scramble rescue)

This is a quick reentry technique for sea kayakers that doesn't rely on other paddlers, paddle floats or any equipment other than a paddle and kayak. It works in moderatly rough water beacause the legs act as outriggers to provide substantial stability as they lift out of the water if the kayak starts to tip to one side.

The Sterling Rope ATS Belay Device used in self rescue mode

The ATS device is a versatile belay and rappel device designed for both rock climbing and canyoneering. This unique device accommodates the need for various friction settings on rappel and belay, as well as auto lock-off belay options. The ATS incorporates the best parts of a tube or plate device and a figure 8 with 'hyper-horns' into one compact durable frame.

Episode 11: Bare Bones Ascending

Subscribe using the link above or to the podcast series at alpinets.podbean.com Occasionally rock climbers and canyoneers are faced with the prospect of self-rescue. That is, the participant has encountered a situation where they cannot continue - the rope is too short, the rope is damaged, the rope is severed, etc... and they must ascend the rope to rescue themselves from that situation. Ideally, if self-rescue is happening, you are equipped with a great setup of mechanical ascenders, foot loop of some sort, multiple chains, runners, carabiners, etc... that are all within reach of you. But, assuming you don't have any of those items on your person, self-rescue can appear to be a daunting task. However, if you possess a chain of some sort, an autoblock, and a rappel device you have all the tools you need to ascend back up your rope. In this technique tip we are just ascending on one rope, but the technique holds true for double rope ascensions as well. If you practice the described technique please do so in as controlled an environment as possible. If you mis-rig this system you may fall and injure or kill yourself. Furthermore if you are unable to lock off your progress and your friction hitch fails you may also fall and injure or kill yourself. Regardless of the tools, self rescue is serious business and deserves some serious training. Check out all the self-rescue training options at http and www.alpinets.com

Mixed Climbing Avalanche Accident.m4v

WARNING: PROFANITY AND GRAPHIC IMAGES This accident occurred on Nov 6th 2011 in South East Wyoming on a first ascent of a previously unclimbed route (it's been climbed in the summer - never as an ice climb as far as we know). I am posting the video as a reminder of how challenging self-rescue is when things go wrong on an alpine climb. Our climb was only two miles from the road, but a broken ankle made it feel much farther. I hope this video helps other climbers make wise choices about how they manage risk. Oh...and, yes, that is a reference to Touching the Void. Enjoy, Ed

ISR Naples, June 2010 movie.m4v

Infant Swimming Resource! For more than 40 years, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) has been teaching critical Self-Rescue™ skills -- giving children the competence and confidence to safely enjoy the water. ISR's technique teaches babies from 6 months to 6 years of age how to save themselves if they were to end up in the water alone. Your child will not be the only one who will learn during lessons. ISR has also integrated in a Parent Education program that will educate you to understand drowning prevention methods and thereby, safeguard your child in and around the water. Here are the Facts about ISR: ISR was founded in 1966 by Harvey Barnett, Ph.D., with the guiding mission "to prevent drowning and enrich the lives of children by teaching them to swim." Since its inception, ISR has provided over 7 million safe and effective lessons to more than 200000 children. This nationally recognized program is the first and only drowning prevention strategy that has earned a 100% safety record. ISR Certified Instructors are trained through an intensive 6-week, in-water and academic course. The Instructor is trained and tested in the academic areas of child psychology, behavioral science, physiology and anatomy. In addition to gaining an academic foundation, Instructors engage in more than 60 hours of hands-on, in-water practical application of the technique. To learn more about the program please visit our national Website at www.infantswim.com or www.swimsafenaples.com. The ISR ...

Infants 6 months to 12 months

Miles Story - Many of you who have seen the video segment on YOUTUBE or various blogs on the internet, have asked about the 11 month baby who, along with his father and the family dog, are in the videoclip. The baby had 3 weeks of ISR lessons prior to having his simulated self rescue while fully clothed skills videotaped. It is a re-enacted drowning scenario that happened to a family whose baby was not skilled and therefore drowned. In the scene we taped, both his mother and father were present at the taping along with several other adults and his ISR Instructor. As part of ISR lessons, parents are involved in the water once their baby is skilled, for at-home practice only and you see that they have practiced at home the end of the clip, when his father picks him up.

Donetsk Mine Rescue Equipment Plant (DZGA) Ukraine

www.dzga.com JSC Donetsk Mine-Rescue Equipment Plant (DZGA) produces means for individual breathing protection for workers of mining, chemical, metallurgical and other industries as well as equipment for professional rescue teams. Range of chemical oxygen self-rescuers SSS-1 is a core product of the plant. Steel SSS-1Y, plastic SSS-1P and CE marked SSS-1PV guarantee essential protection for people working underground. Additionally to modifications of SSS-1 DZGA has developed a 30-minute belt worn self-rescuer Ci-30. Compressed oxygen respirators P-30 and P-34 (2- and 4-hours operation time) are the basic means of breathing protection for professional mining rescue teams in Ukraine, Russia and many other countries. For many years professionals choose DZGA respirators for their perfect reliability, usability and low weight. Maintaining the highest quality of production is the top priority of DZGA management.

Fifty-five Monkeys Rescued From A New Jersey Animal Research Lab

On July 15, 2010, In Defense of Animals rescued 55 long-tailed macaque monkeys from an insolvent toxicology laboratory in Oxford, New Jersey. This lab has been repeatedly cited by the USDA for Animal Welfare Act violations and had a license to sell animals. If not for this rescue, these monkeys could very well have ended up in other labs that routinely perform extremely invasive or terminal experiments on long-tailed macaques. Published articles from 2010 describe experimentation ranging from brain lesions, invasive brain studies of auditory, motor and visual cortex, Ebola virus, stroke, plague and drug-induced seizures. These intelligent, social nonhuman primates suffer when imprisoned for decades in stark lab environments. Monkeys often display clinical signs of depression and abnormal behavior including hair pulling, stereotypic circling and pacing, and even self mutilation. "Rescuing these young macaques from a miserable lifetime locked in a lab furthers In Defense of Animals' mission in protecting the rights, welfare and habitat of animals," said IDA president Scotlund Haisley. "These young monkeys would have been subjected to decades behind bars in cramped stainless steel cages, forced to endure painful toxicology tests. Now they will have a life filled with fresh air, friends, and freedom from harm." IDA is transporting the monkeys to their new homes at four primate sanctuaries in Oklahoma and Texas.

Sea Kayaks on Rivers - Hell's Canyon self support

Sea Kayaks on Rivers explores paddling a Necky Chatham through Hell's Canyon (class IV whitewater) on a two day self-support trip by Salmon Norgaard-Stroich and James Most. Sea kayaking in big water is commonplace on the ocean, but few people think sea kayaks are worthy whitewater vessels. Sea kayaks definitely have their limitations with maneuvaribility, and can be dangerous in pin situations (they don't come with foam pillars between your legs, for example...however, they are an excellent choice for a skilled paddler (sea kayak) with a whitewater background (reading rivers, rescues, etc.). Sea kayaks are great for self supporting (think cargo...), and are excellent on big flat sections in wind (think slicey and fast!). Also, they are a hoot to run big waves (think big ocean surf) and to punch some otherwise sticky holes (but just don't get sideways...).

Victims' Malignant Optimism and Rescue Fantasies

"If only he tried hard enough", "If he only really wanted to heal", "If only we found the right therapy", "If only his defences were down", "There MUST be something good and worthy under the hideous facade", "NO ONE can be that evil and destructive", "He must have meant it differently" "God, or a higher being, or the spirit, or the soul is the solution and the answer to our prayers". The narcissist holds such thinking in barely undisguised contempt. To him, it is a sign of weakness, the scent of prey, a gaping vulnerability. He uses and abuses this human need for order, good, and meaning - as he uses and abuses all other human needs. Gullibility, selective blindness, malignant optimism - these are the weapons of the beast. And the abused are hard at work to provide it with its arsenal.
