BUZZARDS BAY With his sons ship docked safely in Kenya, Capt. Joseph Murphy said he has received the best Easter gift imaginable. Addressing the media at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon, a weary Murphy said he did speak with his son, Capt. Shane Murphy, by phone earlier today. Murphy said his son is disappointed that he had to leave behind his captain, MMA graduate Richard Phillips, who is still being held hostage by the Somali pirates, but he is looking forward to returning home. To hear his voice was like getting 1000 Christmas gifts, Murphy said. Murphy said his son was not able to go into detail about what happened because the incident is still under investigation. He is expected home early next week, at which point Murphy said there will be a private, belated Easter dinner for the Murphy family. He thanked everyone from President Barack Obama to the media, and again expressed his appreciation to Phillips for guaranteeing his sons safety. Id like to thank Capt. Phillips and his family for his courage and personal sacrifice, Murphy said. Hes done everything he could possibly do and he saved our son.
