Video Info: The 1956 version of the film Moby Dick contained some great chanteys, led by the famed English folklorist and singer, AL Lloyd. He himself had experience working as a whaler in the Antarctic for 7 months back in the 1930s. This scene contains two chanteys (shanties). The first is "Blood Red Roses," which is being used to haul up a tops'l yard. Then we hear "Heave Away My Johnnies," being used for the old fashioned spoke windlass to warp the ship out of the dock. (The montage superimposes some hauling over this song, which doesn't go?) The scene takes place when the Pequod sets sail from Nantucket. Starbuck waves to his wife and kids who are standing up on a "widow's walk" and The Quaker owners of the ship do last minute checks...

Part 1 of the miniseries "Roots" (1977), set prior to the American Revolutionary War, featured the brig "Unicorn." To give it a proper maritime feel, I suppose, they included two shanties (chanteys): "Haul the Bowline" "Haul Away, Joe" These short-drag shanties don't match, however, any of the tasks we see the men doing. Oh well! Incidentally, a few years later an excellent album was released with Tom Sullivan leading a crew on the very same vessel, in actual work while chanteying, "Salt Atlantic Chanties" (Folkways, 1980).

A large fire razed a shanty community in Manila on Tuesday afternoon, burning over 900 houses and displacing thousands of residents. Residents immediately fled the burning shanties, carrying as many possessions as they could, while firefighters struggled to put out the flames. [Gemma Torena, Fire Victim]: "Of course it hurts. I don't care if we're robbed as long as we're safe." Arson investigators say the flames came from a faulty appliance inside a resident's house. The fire quickly spread to other nearby houses. Edelina Omesillo, a mother of six, says she does not know what to do after almost all of her family's possessions were lost in the fire. The local government has declared the site a danger zone after a large fire razed the area last week. Residents of a business district in Manila clashed with the police on Wednesday, preventing an attempt to demolish a shanty community burned to the ground last week. They threw rocks and bottles and put up barricades to stop city hall workers from demolishing the homes. Firefighters fought back with water cannons, but failed to disperse the crowd. Residents used their children to prevent baton-wielding police from breaking their ranks. [Elsa Miroy, Local Resident]: "This is injustice. The government should be supporting us, since we have already been victimized by fire. But they have not showed any support. What we have felt is their anger." The riot ended when authorities halted their operations temporarily. Nobody was reported injured in the incident. Authorities banned residents from entering the area and declared it a danger zone.
