First used on the Tour de France in 1911 the Col rises to 2645m and is often the highest point of the tour. The climb to the top starts at Valloire on the one side climbing 2120m over a distance of nearly 35km. The other way the climb starts at the Col du Lautaret which is already at 2058m and from where the summit is only 8.5km away. The Col is normally closed in the winter. With a population of 5500 and a magnicent town gateway called La Porte du Soubeyran the town also has 2 impressive statues, one 'The Beast of Gevaudan' and the other of 'Henry IV of France'.
